If you're already sick, be careful with the astragalus as it can hold the virus in your cells, making your recovery time longer. As a preventative though, it's great. I make two syrups; one with astragalus for use as a preventative and one without it, for those who have a cold or flu in progress.

Astralagus can lower cortisol so anyone that doesn't produce cortisol can go into adrenocortical crisis. And this is from experience. There are multiple herbs that lower cortisol so please research all herbal supplements before you take them.

If you buy American elderberries (Sambucus Canadensis) you do not need to boil them because they do not have cyanide in them. You can order them freeze dried from River Hills Harvest. By not boiling them the beneficial antioxidants are preserved. Hope this helps.

Amy, I lost your channel somehow, but here you are! We now grow elderberries and are harvesting for syrup for the first time this year. I'm going out today to pick the remaining elder flowers to dehydrate. Last year, commercially available elderberry syrup really helped us a TON, but they are really not great unless you buy it from folks like yourself, private makers. I've never heard of astragalus until now. I do take a lot of herbal supplments and I am finally growing my own (made lemon balm tincture for the first time this year) and will expand the herb garden next year. As a young person of almost 65 with a very strong immune system who never takes vaccines, I am doing more every year to boost mine. I am hypothyroid and even have hopes of getting off those meds eventually (I know, a very tall order they say is impossible). ~Cynthia
@monstermcboo7282
@monstermcboo7282 2 года назад
Avoiding those needles is very smart. That puts you miles ahead of other 60+ folks, healthwise. Be careful with lemon balm and slow thyroid; some recommend against it. But there are so many wonderful herbs for promoting thyroid healing! I use simple thyme, oatstraw, horsetail, and nettle daily, for instance. It’s an interesting topic so when you have time, consider sitting with a notebook and doing some research on thyroid healing herbs.

There are actually two different kinds of medicinal Elderberries. One is European and there is an American Elderberry. Sambucus canadensis (North American Elderberry) and Sambucus nigra (European Elderberry). Tests conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri’s Elderberry Improvement Project also show that canadensis plants have far lower concentrations of cyanogenic glycosides, the compounds in elderberries that give some people stomach trouble. Therefore, they do not have to be cooked At higher temperatures.

Amy was not recommending a tincture because of some sources claiming that the elderberries contain cyanide which requires them to be simmered 20 minutes. I researched this to see if this was true and one source said that the cyanide was only contained in the immature (not ripe) berries which could be removed during washing when they floated to the top. I switched to Aronia berries (Black Chokeberries) for my tinctures because they are supposed to contain more vitamin C than elderberry without the cyanide risk. I have made both and both have had no ill effects that I know of and have cleared up my cold symptoms very effectively. As for adding honey to a tincture-? If both are shelf stable (no water), I wouldn’t think that would be a problem but I have never tried it.

I just finished making your Elderberry syrup with Astragalus, following your instructions exactly. My question is regarding the boiling time. I tripled the recipe and as a result I had to boil much longer than thirty minutes to cook it to half the amount. Did I loose much of the medicinal value as a result? I just assumed the larger amount took longer to cook down? What say you? Love your podcast.

I am baffled bc I hear people say how wonderful elderberry tastes and I purchased the exact same brand you mentioned(Frontier) but my smell a tad sour and are SO bitter. I boiled down for the time you said but it went from 4 cups water to 1 cup so I am wondering if I did something wrong bc I only boiled for 19 min but it lost that much liquid. Is cooking the astragalus for 20 minutes long enough to get the good out of it? It's pretty hard and woody. Maybe decoct it a while before adding the elderberries? What do you think?

I do all of mine for 20-35 minutes and works great.

I made an elderberry tincture with vodka without boiling the berries. Could I boil the tincture for 20 minutes to reduce the risk of cyanide?

I wonder if you can use monks fruit. It can substitute for sugar, has no caleries and is natural

Is it possible to buy elderberry syrup?
@shayb1701
@shayb1701 3 года назад
Please help me with this question. When I take one tablespoon of Elderberry syrup that I made it goes straight to my head meaning between in the middle of my forehead near the eyes and it seems to sit at the top of my stomach. Not a good feeling. my family members, even our 6 year old, have not had any side effects from it. I so want to make it again and experience the benefits from it but I'm very hesitant. Have you had any other comments regarding side effects from Elderberry syrup?
@TheFewellHomestead
@TheFewellHomestead 3 года назад
Generally you wouldn't have side effects unless you aren't cooking it long enough, or you have an allergy of some sort.

Aren’t you concerned about using astragalus daily? I thought we don’t want to have the immune system in overdrive non-stop.
@TheFewellHomestead
@TheFewellHomestead 2 года назад
we only use it daily for a few months out of the year. We don't take elderberry syrup all year long.
