There's probably a lot of nostalgia going on but the soundtrack to "Princess Mononoke" always gives me goosebumps. Especially that beautiful version uploaded 14 years ago to RU-vid. Maybe Joe Hisaishi is even the reason why this film will always be one of my favourites of all time. Never underestimate the power of film score. It always makes the difference between a good and a great film. Imagine Lord Of The Rings without Howard Shore's music. Or imagine any film without the music. It would take away a lot of it's soul. If not even all of it. Film is such an interesting and comprehensive form of art. Nice video, mate!
In regards to the lack of music taking away a film's soul, I don't think that this is always the case. In some russian movies there is barely any music and yet they can feel really heavy. Stalker by Tarkovsky often feels very empty because of this but I think in a good way. The lack or music creates a sense of loneliness which can also be a big part of a film's mood.
Nothing beats “O Brother Where Art Thou,” in my opinion. Phenomenal display of bluegrass & traditional southern spirituals, nothing but bangers. It may not the most advanced, ‘intelligent,’ or nuanced usage of music in film from an aficionado’s stance, but something you could listen to & enjoy casually while also being well-incorporated into the actual scenes of the film itself.
If you like trippy, trance inducing electronic/ambient stuff, you HAVE to check out Sinoia Cave’s soundtrack for Beyond the Black Rainbow. Sounds like meditating while on acid.
The Wicker Man has some of the most haunting folk/psychedelic rock I've heard. I think the film's atmosphere wouldn't be as powerful without the soundtrack, as it fits the mood, scenarios y plot like a silk glove. Fun fact: Agalloch were inspired by this film for their acoustic EP "The White", even sampling various dialogues.
Top Gun (for the main theme as well as the 80s cheese), Halloween (the 1978 one, for being a great dark synth and ambient soundtrack that creates suspense), multiple James Bond soundtracks (particularly, for me, ones like A View To A Kill, The Spy Who Loved Me, Thunderball, For Your Eyes Only, and The Living Daylights), Psycho, North By Northwest, Last Action Hero and Die Hard all come to mind for me.
Vangelis is a must know and listen for anyone that Loves music. He was a Master Composer. Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, etc. Look up videos of him here on youtube. He played the ENTIRE orchestra by himself, from his Synth/Workstation. He understood and talked about Music from a very deep place that's inside of all of us. Rest In Peace Maestro
@@wyattxhimThe Italian progressive rock band Goblin collaborated a lot with Dario Argento, and this soundtrack is simply fantastic. The title track might be one of the most iconic tunes of horror movies.
The soundtrack for Vertigo is my personal favorite. That film would not be my favorite of all time without that soundtrack. That goes for most of what Bernard Herrmann does though, from Psycho to Twisted Nerve to Taxi Driver to Sisters, it's absolutely immaculate
My #1 favorite film soundtrack of all time is Ennio Morricone-The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I analyzed the soundtrack deeply for a final project during a film music class I took in college, and it just deepened my love for spaghetti western movies and music.
i agree with the majority of your list and i like that it has a lot of variety! one additional film that i would add (for my list, that is) would be the forbidden zone for its theatrical and "proto oingo boingo" musical sounds. not sure if youre familiar with this one but it also has some cool stop-motion and animated segments. it was directed by danny elfmans brother (danny did the soundtrack and is also in it) and features members of the mystic knights of the oingo boingo, which was a theatre group before the band. its super zany (and offensive by modern standards), very low budget but managed to get a few minor celebrities, and def worth checking out if you havent seen it before. imo it still holds up, though there are a few gags that make me cringe a little.
Dark Crystal is such a blast to my childhood. As well as a blast of frustration remembering Age of Resistance season 2 getting canceled a few years back now.
Twin Peaks The Shining Dracula by Wojciech Kilar Sicario All Quiet On The Western Front Nosferatu by Popol Vuh Robin of Sherwood by Clannad Ghost in The Shell
Fantastic vid, man. Been thinking of doing something similar myself. 100% agreed on The Lord of the Rings soundtracks. Truly unique, nostalgic and completely fitting for each scene and setting. Stunning stuff.
My Favorite Film Soundtracks : From Russia with Love (1963) The Dollars Trilogy (1964-66) Mad Max (1979) The Empire Strikes Back (1980) Blade Runner (1982) Creepshow (1982) Ghost in the Shell (1995)
For me, it's all about the Old Boy 2003 soundtrack. It's such a hopeless and lonely series of songs that truly mirror the tone and especially the feelings of the main character. Truly amazing.
I haven’t seen no one mentioning, but for movie soundtrack, but my absolute favorite is Kubrik’s “A Clockwork Orange”, i would also mention “American Psycho”’s soundtrack
Here's some of my absolute favorite film soundtracks/scores of all time: Batman (1989) Both the soundtrack by Prince and the score by Danny Elfman Akira Last Action Hero Star Wars (1977) The Terminator Terminator 2: Judgement Day Batman Begins Ferris Bueller's Day Off Psycho (1960) Beetlejuice
One of the few soundtracks that I've listened to and found to be very evocative and atmospheric on its own, is The Name of the Rose from 1986 by James Horner. Amazing movie as well. Also, Exotica by Mychael Danna (1995), the Ocean's Twelve, Out of Sight and Analyze That soundtracks - all by David Holmes (1998-2004), Michael Nyman's scores for Peter Greenaway's films, the Orlando soundtrack by David Motion and Sally Potter (1993), some of John Barry's stuff from the 60's and 70's and Ennio Morricone.
Woooo, Conan the Barbarian. Excellent choices in this survey overall, but that one is a personal standout, and the first film score I bought. How good is "the Orgy"?
Top 12: Black Roses Soundtrack *1988* Halloween 3: Season of The Witch Score *1982* The Crow Soundtrack *1994* Fletch Soundtrack *1985* Forbidden Planet Score *from the 50's but not released until 1976* Dredd Score *2012* The Guest soundtrack *2014* Sicario Score *2015* Ravenous Score *1999* The Warriors Soundtrack *1979* Night of the Demons Score *1988* Hellraiser Score *1987*
my favorite's gotta be Akira. despite being a film that takes place in a cyberpunk setting the music just has this consistent, i don't know...primordial feeling to it? Kaneda's Theme is the obvious standout (for me at least lmao) and it sounds like it was written for a toad venom orgy. but like, in a tasteful and artistic way edit: ooh okay forgot about Fantastic Planet. that shit slaps too. i actually heard it first sampled in Flying Lotus' "Meditation Medication" and was obsessed with it before i even ever saw the movie lol. it turns out TONS of rappers have sampled it, and FlyLo himself has done so *several* times, but that was the first time i'd heard it. apparently the show Superjail remixed it or at least used a track heavily based on it for a scene involving the alien twins as well
I’m glad you have expanded out in your videos and do reviews on more than just extreme metal. Music solely designed to offend your parents is fine, but it gets kind of boring and uninspiring after awhile. In any case, your perspective is insightful and enthusiasm infectious no matter what you are reviewing.
I was so absorbed by the overall assault of Tetsuo I didn't get a moment to absorb the music. I'll totally give it a listen! (as well as the other picks.) I really like the Demons soundtrack, got to see Goblin play it live last year and it was AMAZING! It's an interesting mix of electronic music and rock music. Definitely worth a listen!
check out more of howard shores work? his stuff with cronenburg is good, and also suprised twin peaks ost isn't on here. fire walk with me has a great track called ''the pink room''
Sinister's soundtrack is one I always come back to, though It's very hard for me to get through due to the dread and paranoia it plants inside me. Especially the Ulver parts. Scariest music I've ever heard.
I recently rewatched David Cronenberg's "Crash", and I was so blown away by the elegantly cold sountrack written by Howard Shore. I admired both film & music, but this time I was completely mesmerized by the music. Truly recommended. Thanks for the great content you share!
Erich Korngold's scores for 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938) and 'The Sea Hawk' (1940)... He was the Mozart of classic Hollywood film scores... 👌 Maurice Jarre's score for 'Lawrence of Arabia' comes close..
The Crow bro. And Spawn was unique because each track was two different artists working together. Interview with the Vampire is a fav score of mine too, and copollas Dracula
Just rambling off a few of my favorites: Pi Eraserhead Cannibal Holocaust Taxi Driver Repo Man Return of the Living Dead Dead Man The Shining The Lost Boys Heavy Metal Savage Streets Solid video, great to see Tetsuo and Gummo on here.
thank you for the suggestions. i want to put forward mike patton's "crank 2" soundtrack (the most avant garde metal s/t?), lalo schifrin's superb s/t for "THX 1138", and for me the most 'movie soundtrack' non-soundtrack release, "outland" by bill laswell and pete namlock. also in case you haven't heard them, there is a crazy avant garde group called el topo, likely named after this film judging by your description. which in turn reminds me of finding a 90's weird rock/metal band called ipecac who obviously preceded the record label. your 'most metal soundtrack' suggestion for gummo got me thinking about how good the doom eternal soundtrack is by mick gordon, so maybe at some point you could make a video about computer game soundtracks.
Damn, special mentions to Daniel Lanois (Slingblade), everything Fantomas reworked on The Director's Cut (Some big misses there). Patton and Zorn have done some great work that's leaked into film. The soundtrack to The Naked Lunch is dope... Heave on the smack jazz. I'm sure I'll kick myself for stuff I've missed here (Deliverance). Love tgat you put Harm in here, all of his OST's are great, Trash Humpers has some hell creepy stuff on it. Soundtracks/Scores are where it's at.
you named some of my favorite soundtracks. Personally, I would still be missing the following 😊 Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with me + The Series Taxi Driver The Million Dollar Hotel Once upon a time in the west Pulp Fiction The Lost Boys The Neon Demon
You might like Nick Cave's scores, Ulver also did music for a couple, one I don't think the movie ever came out. As an old fart I loved the Crow soundtrack!
This guy surpass himself everyday. in good video ideias. Keep it up man! Thanks for caring so much about the quality in your videos. Salute and cheers from Brazil❤
I'm struggling to choose which soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi I like more... Watching Hayao Miyazaki's movies matched with Hisaishi's music was so fundamental to me and my sister during our teen years, and to these days we consider these movies with their scores as some of the most essential works four our life. The way Hisaishi is able to combine elements of - let's say, for the sake of brevity- western and far-eastern music with such an emotional yet restrained edge is so... moving. A recent addition in my book of favourites would be Kevin Penkin's score for the first season of Made in Abyss. Honestly, he was able to reach Hisaishi's levels of emotive intensity. Penkin employs also elements of dark-ish ambient that are so effective in painting the mysterious and immense nature of the Abyss. And I can say that, without a shadow of a doubt, the opening scene of the first episode, matched with the song "Underground River", is one of the best scenes of the entire history of animation. There, I've said it: judge me if you want.
There’s something about Conan the Barbarian 1982 and metal heads. It’s one of my top 10 movies of all time and most old heads I know love that shit. I think it just came out at the perfect time.
Josef van Wizzem also did the soundtrack for a re-release of Murnau’a Nosferatu that I saw him perform live with the film. At the climax of the film he took out a guitar with a ton of distortion pedals which ended up with a dozen people running out of the theatre. In short, check it out.
theatrical or directors cut? because iirc the basic theatrical version, while being inferior in terms of length and therefore making sense, was blessed with some really goofy music when that guy in the white suit came on. either way possession is in my top 5 movies list for sure, im a big fan of andrzej zulawski.
The first film that popped in my head was Mulholland Drive (i actually thought of twin peaks but that's a whole series) But Mulholland Drive has that classic scene of the Spanish woman singing her heart out on stage, and such a timeless score that feels very dark and ethereal and tragic. Amazing film. Another favorite movie soundtrack is Fitzgerraldo by Werner herzog. Gotta love opera in the middle of the Amazon jungle and also legendary krautrock band popol vuh in the soundtrack... Shit now I think of it Wrath of God has my favorite OST opening of any film ive ever seen. Legendary synth music as the conquistadors lead their slaves over machu pichu in the mist laden mountains. But Herzog always has good music in his films. Shout out to the Microcosmos soundtrack too
El topo, gummo, rules I would add requem of a dream, I've watched this movie so many times, and maybe spun, nails, visions of suffering, and return of the living dead so many cool bands that's how I got into the cramps
ALL RIGHT! Blade Runner, Conan The Barbarian.. You got my vote for video of the year.. (NO SARCASM.. HUGE VANGELIS FAN HERE!.. and i'm old as dirt.. LOL) But joking aside. .Wyatt you are a good person. You see what has to do with 'old things' and 'new things'. You are a “young person” interested in “old” music as much as in new things. And it's good. A video on niche genres like pagan BLACK metal, slam death, HC beatdown or even 90's gangsta rap would be cool! No ?
