I'm so thankful for you. I received my EG1 today and took it for a spin. All of my shots were WAY too fast, but if I tightened the grinder up, I heard what sounded like burrs rubbing. I thought my $4,000 grinder had to be defective. But Lance, you saved the day. I learned to go beyond my sound comfort level.....and found where the espresso grind was hiding. Thank you sir.
love you and your videos, so much work went into this! I've also just recently received my v3, every time I look at it, makes me happy. such a piece of art.
absolutely! That's such a big part of buying something like this. It is genuinely a piece of art sitting on the table. I enjoy holding it and touching it. So premium.
This is by far the best EG1 review I've ever seen! Well done, Lance! And completely ignoring the review, I have to say that your videos are always a joy to watch. You never fail to make me laugh with your Lance-ness. You're the best!!!
Just curious Lance did your EG-1 come with a free "patina" because my machine came with a nice sized ding right on the bean hopper for all to see. Which Weber Workshops explained the machine was meant to patina. Not to mention they just tossed my Ultra burrs in the box to bounce around like a a $450 pinball....
Dude thank you for how much effort and thought you put into this and all your work, it def doesn’t go unnoticed. As for the next high end grinder I buy, it must have the anti static tech that the ode gen 2 has, that changed the game imo. The ode does a fantastic job of eliminating static and I can only assume that many will follow suit in the following year or so. Also I love you too lance
I agree on both points, Lance's dedication is awesome. The effort just to source, swap and experiment with all of those burr sets makes me exhausted lol And that Ode Gen 2 (I have one and it's really great!) is a game changer IMO. I don't RDT at all with it and have no issues with static or retention and it's using a old technology that been in hair dryers for awhile. I'm sure there's some design or engineering challenges, but one that I think would totally be worth it to fit on as future updates to other grinders, or put into new ones, or course.
thank you! And yes. The anti static is fantastic. I am sure more and more companies will integrate something similar in the coming months. Thanks for watching! I do put a lot of work into these so I greatly appreciate the kind words!
Just pray you get a perfect grinder on arrival The issues i have seen people reporting with Weber customer support over an extended time (not to mention public image issues) are truly absurd for a company charging their prices. absolute hard principled "no" buy for me
I can’t see myself ever buying this grinder just due to the price but for anyone out there who is in the market for something like this then this video would be an absolute godsend!
Haha, part of me was hoping you’d say it wasn’t all that great, but I do indeed need to keep dreaming and saving for this. The ability to swap between a great espresso burr and filter burr without having to worry so much about alignment is amazing.
Thank you for creating a plethora of amazing content especially for us extreme coffee nerds! 😉 The time and effort you put into all of your videos is abundantly obvious in the final product and I think I speak for all of us fans when I say I appreciate what you do more than you know! And who knows maybe I’ll get to meet you at the coffee expo! 😃
Thanks so much for the amazing review Lance(love you back)! I would be super interested in two comparisons, the first being between the EG1 and the P100, I'd be curious to see how the 98mm burrs compare in your eyes to the 80mm. Second, when you get around to doing the Unifilter review, it would be really cool to see how it compares to a unibasket, like the one's offered from Weber and Wafo. Thanks again Lance!
thank you! One of the realest watching til the end. FYI- unibasket and unifilter are same. one is just connected to a big hunk of steel. hole pattern, etc, is same. and i'll look into a p100!
Thanks for an excellent and very thorough review. I really respect the fact that you took your time testing the different burrs. I really enjoyed it as a fellow EG-1 owner. And please ignore the hateful comments from trolls and other idiots. You seem like a genuine, fun and great human being. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love the discussion and comparison of the burr sets. Such a valuable source of information. I will absolutely be watching the upcoming 80mm burrset comparison video!
Outstanding review Lance, you truly provide the most comprehensive ones out there. All my grinder purchases so far (ode+ssp, manual grinder) have been due to your videos.
Lance, I love and admire your work and what it contributes to the World of Coffee! Thank you so much. As always: what a great pleasure to watch a video of yours! I learn so much while at the same time enjoy your great Humor and very profund Knowledge.
Thanks for this review mate. I’ve had my Onyx EG1 for about 18 months. I have Ultra Burrs installed permanently and use it exclusively for filter. It’s just so good and agreed with everything you’ve mentioned. Mine has stalled twice in that time, I tend to just dump the beans and no feed unless I have the day off and have time to play. I would say the stalling in a no issues for me, I’ve had the same happen with other grinders as well
This was one of the biggest complaints against the Option-O mini which is a fraction of the price and they claim to have fixed by now. Yet the niche is still the recommended grinder for conical burrs
@@entropy0917 Please do not comment on someones health based on a youtube video. You do not know his medical information, genetic history, personal habits, or anything else. It is incredibly rude even if done with good intentions. Wish him good health and move on. This is something that his doctor will discuss with him if it is appropriate.
I appreciate the time spend talking about the sound of the bur under rotation without beans on very fine settings. Reminds me of my concern when I heard the turbo blades making similar sounds the first time I bought a turbo charged car.
Hi Lance, I can't stress enough how much I enjoy your videos. Your energy, your houmor, your technical knowledge and ability to deliver the full information is totally desirable. Keep it up brother, you are top.
Wow those burrs are thick! Wonderful review, deserved for such an expensive piece of technology. I started my coffee journey back in August by purchasing the Timemore C2 for FP, then I bought Hario Switch and recently Aeropress. Recently I got the upgrade bug so I watched and read so many reviews of better grinders and splurged on the 1Zpresso K-Max, mostly because of your huge breakdowns. The coffee it makes is much less bitter and the drawdown is surprisingly faster on the V60. Thank you for the in-depth reviews!
Lance, thank you for all the effort you put into your reviews. Every video, is time well spent watching. I truly enjoy your wit, candor and ability to teach us in such an enjoyable manner. What I also particularly liked about this video is how you spoke beyond the function of the EG-1, and l pointed out how much you admire its form and aesthetic design. This is something that is largely lacking in this industry. My EG-1 functions wonderfully, but I also enjoy it as a working piece of art on my countertop. Bravo to you and thank you again.
Great review. The part where you say "someone will probably comment below the name of this plug", without looking it up but just as someone that worked in an AV rental/production shop where the staff commonly called parts by their technical name we always referred to them as IEC plugs. Outside of that environment in our industry they are colloquially called D plugs/cables. (I'm sure IEC is a naming convention and there are actually other modifiers with numbers and letters for specific variations)
Have you used the titus nautilus? The nautilus with the SSP Brew burrs is a pretty amazing brew combo. I looked at the EG and ended up going with the nautilus and love it
I’m just here for the algorithm… this is quite a long video for a grinder I have 0 intention of buying. Anyway thank you for all the hard work & knowledge you share.
haha! So true. With these super expensive pieces of equipment, I like to be extra thorough! For those considering it, I wanted to have a one-stop shop for all their questions. Thanks for commenting!
I love listening to you nerd out over burrs, i have learnt so much about how the difference in gemoetry changes the taste and extraction :D i've recently bought a refractometer and now im going doen the rabbit hole XD
The Ceado E37Z Hero was introduced to the public around 2018. Adjustable RPM, 83mm dlc coated flat burrs, single dose grinder. Approx 5,000 usd. They are one of the first. I'm surprised no one other than whole latte love haven't reviewed them.
The E37Z and hero variant are made to order. I had one. They are gorgeous machines. However , since I’ve owned both and used both the EG-1 is the better grinder in my opinion. Easier to clean, less retention (both are minimal ) but for pour over and espresso the EG1 is better.
I just ordered the Eg-1 and was looking for additional info. I just found your channel and have to say that this video is incredibly detailed and informative. Thank you for your time and effort. Subscribing now.
This thing is a work of art. I would think the experience of using it would be quite rewarding. It seems a bit large in that, at 18 inches in height, it would not fit on many people’s countertops that have cabinets overhead. I wish they made a slightly smaller version; still, wow, this is so nice. By the way, if you play this video at 1.5 playback speed it does mimic if you had been drinking all this coffee…
To my knowledge, the most expensive single-dose grinder is the original Titus grinder with DRM hybrid burrs (68+68mm conical+flat) with a price tag of approx €6500.
Actually the base Version of this grinder is now at 7000 € afaik. Without customization, shipping and tax. It can easily exceed 10k€ delivered to your door with some customization.
Still, I think Weber’s stuff isn’t about the “best product” in this price range but the “best looking” product in the market. Langom 100’s appearance is simply a lack of details.
Amazing video thanks Lance. And 253 comments, and you’ve replied to every one of them! Great commitment to your viewers! Re: HU & ULF, exact same geometry, and maybe the coating (or blind?) made the tiny difference. Were the HU closer in flavor to ULF than LU? What’s your preference for high clarity, 1:3 turbos… HU/ULF, LU, or core?
Hey Lance, your reviews are wonderful, entertaining and funny! Better than many tv shows. Even if you don’t want to review/don’t like the Monolith Max! 😂
haha! Not that I don't like it! I've not tried it! I just haven't bought it based off a friend suggesting other grinders first who has had a few "end game" ones haha!
What an incredible thing that Weber is! Were I to have limitless discretionary funds at my disposal, that would be the first item I'd buy. Thanks for the terrific review Lance!
I absolutely feel you Dancing while drinking your Coffee, I moved from a PID controlled Silvia to a Flair 58 and the Espresso it produces is, at least compared the Silvia, from another world. Now I also dance evertime I dink a bit of goodness.
I found that the EG1 is way less likely to stall once you set to 700rpm plus. It could be the super low rpm that is causing you the occasional issue Lance. I also wouldn't recommend anyone going to "Max" as the internal wipers degrade quickly, there is no reason to go there anyway. I really enjoy this grinder but... I own a V1 & when the oak platen was released I reached out to Weber asking if they would offer a special price for previous owners. They said no. The reason I asked is because the finish on the original metal ring gets rubbed off by the shaker. It leaves a bit of dry taste in the mouth when Weber clearly notice an issue, release an update & offer zero to previous customers, especially at this price point.
If only my kitchen wasn’t so small and my budget was bigger, this would also be my favorite grinder. I love the design of it… Instead I got my Niche Zero standing in a 30 cm niche living up to its name, lol.
I was literally just thinking of getting this grinder since yesterday. Wake up search RU-vid and you just post a video 😂 jesssssshhh I went from wanting Kafatek Max to - P100 and now want this spaceship 🚀 Currently have a MC4 Kafatek
Love you back Lance! always appreciate the reviews even for equipment I’ll probably never afford lol but I’m not giving up hope… ( in my best Lance Hedrick singing voice) “When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do”
I've just got into coffee and found Lance and I've been watching his videos completely random. This guy has so many different haircuts and styles lmao.
Another great video, super helpful! Have you had any long term use with a Monolith Flat/MAX? If so, how would you compare whichever burrs you tried in the Monolith to the ULF and Core burrs?
The joint operation between Weber and Acaia is what led me to the Acaia Orbit. It looks like a sexy mini EG-1. Currently absolutely loved the Orbit, but I still dream of an EG-1.
Doug designed a beautiful machine with the orbit. NOt a fan of the weird 30 unit releases theyre doing. May or may not get one in the future. We will see. 64mm grinder is super saturated lol
@@LanceHedrick 64mm Grinders are hyper saturated right now and seem to be the target for the consumer market. I'd like to see innovation in the 80mm space myself. I do love my Orbit, although the releases have been absolutely abysmal from a manufacturing standpoint. With 500 Eclipse editions and only 60 released in the last four months I hope Acaia is able to ramp up production to a sustainable level. With the other options that exist, I wouldn't recommend waiting for one if you can get your hands on a nice P64 unless you absolutely love the design.
I'm struggling with the concept of the Orbit's being grind by weight but also single dose? You're paying for the grind by weight tech, paying for low retention/low tolerances in build and chamber, but why have grind-by-weight without a hopper? You end up weighing your beans before anyway. I suppose most home users that would spend this kind of money would at least brew different ways and maybe use a hopper for the bag of beans they buy and leverage the grind by weight and tight tolerances to switch brew methods for the same beans more seamlessly.
@@jauntus1 The orbit cost me $1350. Without the scale it's a solid single dose, variable RPM, 64mm grinder. P64 costs ~$1600 so the Orbit actually comes in with a lower initial cost than the P64. Add in the scale for $200 and the price of the two grinders are arguable very close together with the Orbit offering more features. Now that's also with Mazzer 33M in the orbit vs. SSP burrs in the P64 so if you purchase the Orbit and SSP burrs you land yourself right at the same P64 price point but without GBW. I think both grinders are solid choices and have only used the GBW like 3 times on my orbit. It is nice that the GBW isn't integrated into the grinder and a Lunar serves multiple purposes. They do plan on releasing a hopper at a later date, but GBW isn't for everyone and is a very niche feature to have.
Thanks for your videos Lance, my wife and I love your content. Also thanks for the recommendation regarding the ZP6. We love it and we couldn't taste a difference with SSP MP Brews in our Ode. We actually decided to not buy any Weber products, since their attitude towards the consumer is terrible. There are so many dedicated companys, who push out new and better products. Have a great day!
I understand that! I'm trying to be impartial in these reviews. Doug is an impressive human with his skillset and knowledge and there is good reason his company has such high repute. But i am stoked to hear about your love with the zp6! Such a good grinder. l love mine
As usual love your review. Actually there is a more expensive grinder out there... the Ceado E37Z hero, which I happen to own. If somehow you can get your hands on one. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! do a review and a comparison with the weber. I feel theres still an edge to the Ceado due to the very specific burr set it has but I'm not a professional as you
Hi, I really love all your videos. I must say that your videos have helped me so much in my pursuit of great espresso. Is this grinder still your favorite for espresso?
Thanks for the great review. I am so tempted by this grinder, and your review makes me want it more. There is however one critical area of concern that I was completely omitted from the video: Weber's customer service. If I'm to drop over $5,000 on a grinder (with shipping and import taxes that's what I'd pay), I want to make sure that Weber has my back. It's a key purchasing decision. I've ready so many critical things about Weber's support (leaving customers high and dry when units arrive damaged), etc.. etc.. etc... When my Decent arrived damaged (due to shipping), Decent customer support immediately sent the replacement part to me and was a pleasure to deal with. I don't have a good sense if there are a few vocal Weber complainers out there, or if the complaints are actually representative of the majority of their customers. Lance- What are your thoughts on this?
Just my two cents on Weber’s customer service: I own both an EG-1 and a Key. Both have worked flawlessly right out of the box. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t had questions that I wanted answered by Weber’s customer service. Each time I’ve sent emails they have been answered in a timely manner and on three occasions were answered by Douglas Weber and I’m just a normal customer / nobody special. I have every confidence that should I have a problem, that Weber will stand behind their product and resolve it in an appropriate manner. If I didn’t feel this way, I wouldn’t have spent the kind of money I have, nor would I continue to buy their products. In my opinion, Weber offers us some of the most well designed, carefully engineered and beautifully crafted tools available.
@@kevinbkk9101 Congratulations. I hope you love yours as much as I love mine. Just as a follow up, I ordered a Unibasket when they first became available. I received it last week and tried to put it into my ECM portafilter. It didn’t fit. I sent an email to Weber customer service knowing that the office was closed for the Chinese New Year and wouldn’t reopen until today. Waiting in my inbox this morning was a response from Raymond Detweiler explaining to me the solution which is an easy one. This is the type of customer service that I have received every time.
Great review! I am wondering: would the filter coffee be even better if you use the knocker to knock of the final grounds in a separate container and despose them instead of putting them in your coffee? (Is what you knock out with the knocker fine grounds?)
Great video! I really appreciated the details you present regarding burr sets. I'm down to watch your expanded nerdy burr video. And you should totally do videos just dishing out those phat beats! (referring to when you were discussing the "thwacker")
I prefer this with ULF over any grinder with any burrset currently. But, of course, I haven't used a p100 nearly enough with 98mm HU SSP burrs to confidently say there isn't a chance those could beat this out. What I can say is I can't imagine a quality difference big enough to have me prefer the aesthetic of the p100 over this. I adore the aesthetics here.
I have the Eureka Mignon Facile, why you ask well I am a big fan of Christmas Story and the leg lamp was stamped fragile but it sounds like facile. smiling now
Lance, thank you for this wonderful review. I am curious if you've ever tried or would recommend the Ceado E37Z Hero, which is actually more expensive than this Weber. Obviously, cost does not always equal quality, but I am interested in why there is such a dearth of information on the Ceado, especially in comparison to the Weber. Thanks
Awesome video! This is amazing for those who are interested in the EG-1, but also for those who are looking for a review of different burrs in the 80mm platform. You rock!
Given some customers are unhappy with Weber’s customer service and the simplicity and price of Lagom P100 (+ the larger burrs), I think the Lagom takes the crown as the best grinder in the market. Over $1000 less than the EG1 and it can grind through beans at whatever RPM without stumbling like the EG1
I can't speak to this definitively but what I can say is 1) There have been complaints with all "end game grinder" companies including option o 2) bigger burrs doesn't mean better a priori I'm currently trying to get a p100 so I can better understand it.
