Small mistake on my part: The original NTS-1 did have a speaker I believe. I think I drank too much coffee and got a bit carried away.

I use the NTS-1 with an Electra One controller. Not only does it give hands on control to all parameters, it also provides patch memory to this little Korg.

That is what power banks are for. I have 4-6 lying around here. You don't need a battery that raises the price and thickness.

I agree. The third time I lost a nice patch I threw it in my cable box. You can’t keep it powered up 24/7. They should spend another dollar on a small EEPROM.

Very cool! I used to have the mk1, but I sold it because you couldn't save presets and there wasn't a spillover function, so every time you changed the page and turned the knobs the settings/sounds would jump abruptly. But...these issues are still inside the mk2! Why Korg?!? At least the spillover function...

I’ve been planning to buy an NTS-1 at some point and I’m so glad I haven’t yet! Lots of nice new features. I’ll probably never use the keyboard on it but I didn’t like how it looked on the old one. This one looks much better. Will definitely be buying one of these.

Great video. I sold my NTS-1 last year because I wasn’t really using it. But I’m so tempted to get one of these. Would sound great as pads or background ambient sounds on my recordings. BTW will you (could you) be reviewing the Yamaha Seqtrek, woove box or micromonsta II anytime soon?

I've been keeping an eye on the original NTS-1 to come back in stock since adding Sinevibes plugins for the Minilogue XD, but guess this is why the stock was so low. Heard that the old generation user plugins don't work on the mk2 yet, but is sure they would be easy enough to update and that at least Sinevibes will be supporting it. Still, with the wait, I've grown slightly less interested in it and now there's even the NTS-3 to potentially fill the effect processor role.

At that price point the Roland s-1 is a far more attractive option. The rechargeable battery, motion fx and more robust build means I use my S-1 for more than my NTS-1.

@@BoBeats I love my NTS-1 and have used it many times for its sound and effects, but the increase in price for the mk2 just pushes it into that region of better quality devices. If it was in ‘Volca’ format then the price point would be more justified. Would like to see a comparison 👍🏻

I was kind of doubting myself with the speaker feat 😅 This looks like a nice little update. I hope the NTS1mk2 will recognize local-off MIDI CC now too, would make that little keyboard and CC’s more useful for a small setup controller 😃 if Korg adds that we will show it haha 😎

@@newignis yes it does, but but not the midi local-off command which is a handy command which detaches the controllers from the sound engine so you can use midi routing/modifiers to make more goodies

Its very different Volca keys is 3 note paraphonic analog synth. Quite warm fuzzy tone. Better sequencer than nts-1 but no fx I think This is monophonic and has tripple FX, and works as an external FX. And it has an ARP

I wonder if Korg locked the mk2 down more with the new library? Like the Volca FM2 that couldn't use the custom firmware, I wonder if some of the clones/mods will still work or be loadable

I’m not sure if it’s just my copy but the NTS-1 seemed to have a high-pitched whine unless I could get the USB positioned just right. Did you find this one to be quieter in operation?

The S1 has a much better sequencer. And its sound shaping is a bit more advanced (but also a bit complicated bc its in menus!). The NTS1 can be expanded with user osc and it can work as an FX unit. Oh and S1 is battery powered!

I loved version 1, so much I purchased it twice as while this in many ways a wonderful instrument, it is not at all well constructed, both fairly quickly became unusable. While it certainly is not an expensive synth to buy once, 7 would get you a Grandmother.

it is an fx processor, you dont have to use the synth, i dont often use the synth on the mk1, just as a fx box

Mk1 did allow reverb and delay as well simultaneously. I’m doing it all the time. It depends on the complexity of the chosen effect however. If an effect uses too much memory or CPU it didn’t allow you to combine with certain other effects.

How difficult is it to use as an FX box for other gear? Do you have to leave on a drone note or anything or is it just as simple as getting a 1/8 adapter for the audio in?

You simply turn OFF the oscillator and turn on OPEN gate for the envelope. And that should be it. You can also choose to route the audio either to OSC (for mod) or pre filter, pre eg, pre fx. So theres a few routing options. Those routings require manual.

The original just processed incoming audio and routed it through the fx the moment you plugged stuff in and it turned on. I'd be surprised if it would be harder on the mk2.

@@karolwasilewski6528 probably but think of it as more useful for fx, also the price doubled from mk1 to mk2 but it did fix some things. The best part of the mk1 was the innovative user patches and price, and we don't know if they will still work the same

Depends on what you want to do, both a computer/ipad/iphone is a great device for making music. Its all about tools that work for your goals

As somebody who uses both an NTS-1 and iPads... In terms of bang-for-buck, the price and ease-of-use of iOS music apps is hard to beat. But even with hundreds of apps/plugins on my iPad, my NTS has a comparable amount of standouts. It's a microcosm of the old gear-vs-computer debate, comparing making the most of curated sets of limitations (gear) to complete generality (computer). The workflow and tactility are of course different. There are algorithms on the Korg multiengine gear that aren't available elsewhere, but it's still a subjective call whether those might be of value to you.

@@voltijuice8576 - I had another look at the iPad style of apps and how they compare with the hardware instruments (like the Kong) and I’m wondering if the dependence of the app designs on skeuomorphic representations of the hardware hasn’t been a mistake. Perhaps a new touch screen design for synths, DAWs, Grooveboxes, etc., should be created that takes advantage of the UI/UX provided by (for example) the iPad. Is this something worth pursuing?

Just got a second NTS-1 this week😅 Honestly it seems almost the same to me cause I usually it with plugins that provides almost endless sonic possibilities with sequencers, drum machine oscillators and more! So interested in NTS-3 though

Korg had no choice but to bring out a mk2 version because of a manufacturing defect in the mk1 version. I got my mk1 for about £25 because the track had come apart from the PCB and hence the left hand channel was dead. But I really hope there is some kind of firmware update for the mk1. Also, the most annoying thing about the mk1 version is the lack of presets unless connected to a computer. And that terrible keyboard! Edit... £170??! Are Korg mad? Nope. Won't be buying another.

The Korg NTS-1 MK2 does look great. However, isn't Korg being a bit cocky here? The reason the MK1 was so attractive was for its initial price. The increase of price in MK2 makes this not so appealing anymore. I believe the target audience for the NTS-1 were DIY people who liked to tinker and were looking for something cheap and capable, without being too worried about its build quality. Now it seems Korg has shifted the NTS-1 audience to more "serious" musicians who are actually willing to spend a great deal of money for their gear. In my opinion, for this price, this has lost all its appeal and I feel very disappointed that Korg opted to exclude hobbyists from being their consumers. Sincerely, what is going on with these "affordable" musical gear? --- (finishes ranting and goes back to make music with his M8 headless setup using a RG351V that cost 1/3 of the NTS-1....... later cries in the corner because has no official gear and can't be a part of the cool boys).
