For me it's the mother and baby moose with Tetons in background. I love majestic landscapes with wildlife bonuses. Those are the type of images that I find the most rewarding to make myself. Thanks for sharing.

The flying B&W owl is for sure an example of everything coming together for a great photo, the snow reflecting the light perfectly, the perfectly posed owl in flight, and, of course, the photographer's (that would be you) perfect capture of the image.

I love all the wildlife shots, but my favorites were all animal-free. The infrared of the lone tree conveys to me a powerful mood of Zen-like calm. I’ve seen many sand dune photos, including Ansel Adams’ iconic compositions, and none is better than yours. The beautiful, muted colors of the Hawaiian beach, along with the soon-to-disappear footprints, elevate that photo from good to outstanding. Thanks for sharing.

I was in Jackson last Fall and I stopped into a studio run by two men and I mentioned that I followed you in RU-vid. They said that you cover more miles in the wilderness than anyone they knew and that your work ethic was without equal. I thought I would share that your peers really respect what your doing. May favorites was the B&W Great Grey Owl and the Bull Moose at Sunrise.

Personally my favourite is the great grey owl on the wing, but I'm a raptor enthusiast. The mountain lion is right up there though. Taking into account how rare encounters are with these elusive felines, coupled with your quick reflexes - it's pure brilliance. The cow and calf landscape shot is a once in a lifetime image and something you should be very proud of. Thanks for putting the time into these videos Steve, it's really informative and inspiring. I hope to make it to your part of the world one day. Until then please keep these episodes coming. Cheers.

I like the coyote one a lot, the black and white conversion give the photo and the animal a ghost-like feeling, which is exactly the impression I had for this animal when I visited the grand teton last year. But then I voted for the mountain lion after watching the whole video! It was just such a precious photo, an excellent shot, both technically and experience wise! Great job! Looking forward to more amazing photos and videos/adventures from this channel in 2019!

Fantastic shots. All of them, well, nearly all of them. I particularly like that you don't overdo the postprocessing, like to many other photographers. And I very much like how you sort of connect your shots with a "story" and your own, very personal thoughts and feelings about a scene.

My favorite was " Moose at Sunrise". Next would be the mountain lion. Third would be the owl in flight. I also liked the Spring green prairie grass with the Bison. I really enjoyed your "favorite photos of 2018", and it is hard to choose a favorite as I liked/appreciated so many of them. So many of your wildlife shots are up close and personal, and fantastic! Thank you for the background you give with each photo and sharing your internal thoughts too! Your first owl photo is stunning, excellent shot! The owl in the Aspen trees is incredible as well! Plus the coyote and the bull moose with the calf really stand out. Also, the moose and calf with the Tetons in the background is winner as well. So I guess I just cannot choose a favorite! Thanks for sharing!!

Love the white owl with the aspen trees, so starling and well composed. The coyote and the mountain lion are fantastic. The one that struck me strongly was the bison horn. I don't know why but it just has great appeal and as you said, you know exactly what it is, but it is so different. All are great shots, I think for my taste I would prefer some more color shots but all are very good to great shots.

Steve, since you asked, my favorites are the b&w owl flying toward you, the mama moose and baby crossing the lake, and number 3 is a tie between the bull moose in the willows and the mountain lion. All of them were beautiful. Rationale: Owl, just a beautiful photo nothing more can be said. Moose and baby crossing lake - as a wildlife and landscape photographer, this captured both of my loves. I live in the East so most of my landscapes are intimate up close. Love this one. Next 2 show the wildlife in their natural environment. Over the past few years, my personal wildlife photography has gravitated toward environmental shots and less toward wildlife portraits. The up close shot of a big buck deer does get the "ooh ahh" response but the shots showing the environment usually gets a more personal connection "I've seen them doing that" kind of response. All great photos Steve and thank you for putting this together and for the reminder I need to go through about 10,000 photos I shot in 2018 and pick my favorites.

Steve, thanks for sharing your favs from 2018. It's tough to choose just 1 or 2 as my favorites from your set. So... I'm not gonna :) I really like the very first photo. It's a simple, elegant composition; a lovely artistic image. The mountain lion is my other very favorite. It resonates with me because I had a close encounter with a mountain lion, last summer. Your image is much better than mine, though. I also really like two of the moose photo. The image of the cow and calf beside the river with the Tetons in the background is just lovely in all respects. I also like the moose bull and calf photo. Your imagined story sounds good to me. It's a touching moment. That first B&W owl in flight photo is pretty spectacular. Great eyes on that bird.

I love this. I also really like how you preclude some important things. Best photos aren't always technically perfect. Technically perfect photos aren't always good. Personal experience matters (and that's ok). My number one personal fav photo I have ever taken has, on multiple occasions failed to make an impact when submitted to competitions, or even on my socials. It is technically ok. It is, however EXACTLY the photo I wanted to take. I guess objectively it isn't as good, but I cannot look at the photo and see anything else than 'this is my favourite photo, I ever took'. My fav of yours is definitely the moose with the mountains and the pond. I like it enough that I think I might be in touch later this year (if/when money allows, to be entirely honest) to buy a print.

moose with baby drinking water, owl with four aspen trees, and bison in the plains are my favorite. But they are all awesome pictures.

Hey Steve love the black and white of the owl, the coyote and the moose at the end. I was wondering about that shot of the moose cow and calf with the Tetons backdrop reflected in the lake and how that would work as a black and white image? I think I may be going over to the dark side!? But thanks for introducing me to black and white with wildlife!

Thanks🙏 I really like the subtle colors in the moose photo so I didn't even try it as a monochrome. But I'm sure it would look good too...

Steve you had an awesome year, My fav's of your shots are #1 = the G.G.Owl in flight, #2 Moose Teton Reflection, #3 Mtn. Lion so unique not an animal you see every day or ever at that. Terrific collection for 2018. Question did you have company the day you photographed the Bison shot with the Teton range as the backdrop ?

Yep, there was one other photographer there, I think he made some nice photos too 😬👍👍

Love the story of the bull moose and the calves, but my top image was the coyote. Those eyes!

I love them all! How do you convert a camera to infrared? Is this something you could do a video on?

@@SteveMattheis Thanks!! I really love your work by the way, I've not been able to find another wildlife photographer / youtuber that does quite the same as you. Always look forward to your videos and they really make me want to get back out to Yellowstone to shoot more. :)

#1) Gray Owl in flight, #2) Coyote, #3) tie Bison in the field and Bull Moose close up. Looks like I was partial to the wildlife photos. Yep!

Hmmmm? And Hmmmm again. But my A#1 absolute no question top choice is the coyote. It totally says "I am Coyote!" A tossup with last years (I think) Griz in the Snow. For romance, bison in meadow with Tetons. For humor, close up of moose "Ya wanna make somethin of it?"
