Personally my favorite filaments are the ones from extrudr. Its a austrian company. They have pla in Matt and glossy as well as fluorescent and glowing under black light. I’ve gotten about 6 spools of them and they are all great. The printing temperature is the same on every filament (215C/60C). The spool comes in 1.1 kilos and costs around 40 bucks in Switzerland.

I don't know what it's like in other regions, but being somebody that lives in california, buying directly from poly alchemy can have you getting elixir and FX fools for $25 a kilogram come up which basically makes them a no-brainer over filaments that you would get on Amazon for say $20 to $23 My mother just surprised me with three rolls of elixir after I was telling her how beautiful it is! I normally just use £20 per kg pla for parts in kits I make and it's decent and prints ok, but I brought some Protopasta htpla and I have to say the print quality blew me away it just looks so much better than the cheaper stuff I had before and I had no first layer problems with it when printing circles and more complex shapes. So I can see it's worth spending that extra if you have a special project and want a good quality print.

I'm gonna take a guess at how the slicer trickery 1st layer pattern went down. Design into your model a "scribed" pattern, in this case it looks like he sectioned it off in rectangles. Make the scribe just .1mm deep with lets say a .1mm gap. Your slicer will now recognize that there is a layer height difference in the model but your printer's tolerances might not differentiate (use extrusion multiplier to put out a bit more filament if need be). Set your bottom pattern to whatever tickles your fancy (concentric* in this case, as it looks like it produced a diamond shape in each rectangle) Voila!

I have a big issue with prices of some of these fillaments. Your video was great so dont think im knocking that. i pay 17$ per 1 kg normally. 45$ for 3/4 of a roll is way out of my price point that im willing to pay. I feed 5 printers. I think even matterhackers is defiantly NOT worth it. In my case... i bought 1 roll from matter hackers and not willing to pay that price for that filament again. P.S. Paint goes a long way and its cheap
@WrexShepard
@WrexShepard 5 лет назад
These name brand filaments are indeed overpriced. You're paying for dimensional accuracy if nothing else, but I've bought some of these brands and measured them and seen the same +/-.5mm that even the shittiest 14 dollar PLAs have. Prusament is really the only one that seems worth the higher price because they actually do have a +/-.2mm accuracy and have the stats to prove it. I've actually never had a roll of prusament that was even more then +/-.15mm before. 45 bucks and you don't even get a full KG? Sheesh.

On your advice - got the Spidermaker matte paper white paper PLA- calibrated and printed a few things Looks great on small objects, but my roll has poor diameter quality control, so I get layer lines popping out on larger objects where a thinner diameter section goes over a thinker part. I notice the don't specify the +/- diameter tolerances on packaging or website. It's great PLA in terms of composition, nearly no stringing, great removal of supports. If only they had the quality control to go with it. What can you say about the rolls you have - any issues with diameter variation or quality control?

I don't get the matterhackers stuff. I have never had good luck with them. I have had 3 spools of PLA from them 1 spool of petg and 1 spool of ryno and 2 of the PLA's were bad in that the pigment in the filament was weird. There were some really dark spots in a red I got and it had issues printing and then I got a black that was a dark green (again a pigment issue) then the 3rd one was alright but didn't print super well the ryno was okay but a pain to print with and the petg just has bed adhesion issues while esuns petg sticks fine. I absolutely love matterhackers as a company and their support of the community is amazing but I just haven't liked their filament. On the other hand though fillamentum makes some amazing stuff that always prints well and looks amazing. I also really like inland for cheap PLA but its just esun filament under a different logo but I am going to have to buy some of that spider maker. That looks awesome. On the polyalchemy side I LOVE their colors but it prints weird. It also does this weird swelling thing after it gets extruded but its fine to print with its just expensive and kinda weird but I say its worth the cost.

Amazon Basics quality is all over the place -from someone who was only happy with their product. They had QC issues, or multiple suppliers, or both, your best settings will likely be custom for your roll. I did have a little issue with some of their red petg, it needed 245°~250°C for the first 100-ish meters of the roll, and the rest was happy at 230°C.
