You truly are this 2017 MVP for all the sharing and time you put into this videos, we should all tip our hats to you for the work you do here in RU-vid sharing the content specially with the enthusiasm and passion. Thanks for all your videos.
I found his channel today and I love that he has no secrets. He's totally open, and has some great hardware, but doesn't just trash on software like most of the hardware guys you see on here.
Xander van Dommelen Hey thanks for that tip Xander, I have exactally the opposite problem, on my 2560 x 1600 res monitor the GUI is UGE! Now I can actually make it smaller and see the rest of my DAW lol.
THANK you for talking about Generator ! was my first production software (Generator 1.5) i created alot of synths and sequencers in there (i made full tracks there) now the software is called reaktor
So many comments here... I'm not sure if it was mentioned but Absynth - I love it as well - is the brainchild of Bryan Clevinger ootmh. Yes, it was bought by Native Instruments. I know this from a video by PlugInGuru.
The Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol keyboard is awesome indeed, I'm using it myself, though the smaller S61 (back when I purchased it the S88 wasn't out yet 😀) Do you also use the Komplete Kontrol feature, it's so cool! I love it. Great video again, it's awesome to see behind the curtain in such detail! 👍👍👍
Explain to me how Tom is able to make his own instruments and fully working in nki for Kontakt free, and then we pay top dollar for libraries that aren't? I hate it. Every library should be listed with those thumbnails in the main library section.
massive was prototyped inside reaktor by mike daliot but these ensembles never made it out of native instruments offices... there IS a factory ensemble in reaktor called massive 1.1, it's not a synth but a groovebox, and also made by mike daliot, confusingly enough.
Tom if you love reverbs that much why dont you try "MELDAPRODUCTIONS MTURBOREVERB" its totally insane i mean you can write your algorithms for the reverb or create a random algorithm with the random everything option and has some insane presets just check that out some specs 4 early reflection module,6 Late reflection module and two dynamic eq for in and out and all modules have the randomizer feature
hot tip for VSTs with tiny UIs: get an old second hand monitor with a tiny resolution and a cheap usb graphics card. simply have it sit off to the left and just drag the VST onto it whenever you need to "zoom in" as it were. total cost as low as 50 bux or so if you're an ebay master.
I just bought Omnisphere 2 and been lost in how deep it is. Love it and UHE Zebra 2 is definitely my next soft synth purchase. I was going to ask, why is it you have changed from the Doepfer LMK4+ to the Kontrol S88? I've been on the fence and steering towards a Doepfer but the Light Guide keeps drawing me to the KS88. Just wondering why the change? I was under the impression the Doepfer was a composer's choice! Great video as always man! Thanks.
You should try jbridge .i use it and it takes some CPU away from cubase and allows you to use all plugins, new cubase does not allow some plugins to run like kontakt,my buddy has had many problems with kontakt.......uad plugs?
Chief XL, you are someone I look up to, like a mentor, and big brother. I love watching your video's and yes I subscribe. In due time, I will release some great sounding tunes and even scoring music for real estate marketing and small films! Again, thanks again brother, you are truly an amazing dude and music professional!
This is feeding my addiction for VSTs. Arturia Collection V is my favorite though, so many great keyboards and sounds. 17 Keyboards for £160-£200. I use the pianos, rhodes, wurly, B3 and Vox organs all the time.
Brian Clevinger created Absynth with his company Rizomatic in 1999. I had factory patches in that early version of the PlugIn. I also interviewed Brian 2 times on my RU-vid channel. He's still the owner of Absynth - NI licenses the use exclusively. Hopefully someday we will see a version 6 of Absynth!
Also 1 have 25+ unique libraries that expand Omnisphere 2 into really cool places not covered in the massive factory voicing - Cinematic Orchestral Percussion made with synthesis using Patches playing ARP patterns?? :D
w1wang i think you have to pay native to bundle your own sounds into library. There's a few hacks but i didn't bothered to read the whole topics i stumbled upon.
if you have your own samples, just drag them onto kontakt (without any library open) you can then start matching samples with keyboard keys and etc. its actually super straightforward
it's funny to me how many of these tools are simply industry standard. A lot of my picks are the same, it's great to hear about ones I was less aware of.
@Junkie XL- for the OhmBoyz delay UI, you need to select the skin (Classic or Funky) at install time - "You will have to choose between Classic Skin and Funky Skin (they cannot be both installed),"
@Junkie XL, TIP: regarding Arturia synths interface size: Press "Arturia" logo at top left corner > on drop-down menu press "Resize window" = make it as big as 200%, that should be more than enough to work comfortably. P.S. Big thanks for informative videos you produce , all the best!
Can’t you just click on the rectangle at the top left and change the size by percentage? I’m not sure if that option is available with Arturia plug-ins on PC but it is with Macintosh.
How...and I do mean how...how do you choose from so many options. From hardware to software...what is the process of choosing gear/plugins for any project?
About the ohmforce plugins skins, during installation you get to choose if you want to have the 'classic' (neat & tidy version you have installed) skin, or the 'funky' option, which is the big one you were looking for. Loving the ohmicide most myself out of all their plugins.
you should try Nexus.. although it isn't great for customization but the samples are great. also in my opinion the best customizable and greatest for sound design plugin is serum by xfer
Dubstation 2 is out, but the UI isn't as cool. I wish you'd write some more dub. 'A Forest Called Mulu - A Search For The Unexplored' is one of my favourite albums.
If you're a fan of Diva and Monark, check out The Legend by Synapse Audio. Some guy did a youtube comparison video on youtube and The Legend seems to come the closest to the original Minimoog Model D!
Great post. I have The Legend and it feels rather close to the real thing. It's incredible. Although, it is still not 100%. I used to own a Minimoog. All these emulations sound too static to me. I have to process them really well with the outboard to get that more real, "wiggly" sound. But it works. ;)
Tom, you are a true blessing my brother! Can't get enough of these Studio Time videos. It's like your very own Masterclass series on steroids. Thank you!
Also another question,,,is there ever a point where the midi strings sound so good that they don't go out and do the whole orchestra thing and just say let's go with what is there? I once heard a Lucas story where he used midi orchestra in a movie cause it was quickly done and sounded great......explain in further detail about this...
you simply can buy the. Dark Zebra which is a Hans Zimmer version of the Zebra 2 . containing alot of the Batman soundtrack sounds or at least he created them based on the original sounds
Absolutely love the arturia collection the best investment I ever did !!! since I can't have the real stuff this is something really nice!!! when im tweaking the modular v3 I always says lmao junkie xl has this thing on his studio. thank you for all this amazing tutorials you have no idea how helpful they are.
Maybe this wasn't part of the collection, this round, but does this mean ZERO convolution reverbs in your rad mixes? If I missed that in earlier tutorials, somehow, please forgive! Amazing stuff, all around, as always!
You also might give a try to u-he Triple Cheese, not really known (and outshadowed by Zebra/Diva), but sounding different (using completly different type of synthesis than common synths) and absolutlely huge. And its free! ;)
I agree with everything but Arturia and Waves plugins being great soundwise. Some Arturia synths, newer ones, aren't that bad. Like SEM and all of them are quite usable, but the sound is lacking, the filter on all of them sounds more or less lacklustre. Waves used to be a great company, but these days their plugins sound a bit sub-par to many 3rd party plugins, like Klanghelm, DMG Audio, Relab, for example. Needless to say, I don't own any of Waves plugins and I'm well off. For analogue emulations I use real analogue gear. I have a mixer and a few of chosen analogue processors for that. What I like to see from plugin developers is inovation. Something that my analogue gear cannot do.
HI TOM I would like to know why all the composers no matter what type of daw they use to compose, they always have pro tools on a side ? like the three screens and then another one with pro tools in it ? or anybody knows if he had already explain this in other videos ? thank you very much.
this have to be the dumbest answer ever... this make's no funcking sense at all, I was expecting some kinda of answer as sound editor or music editor but no this stupid shit you write so sorry Im looking for some serious answer about this subject not from somebody who clearly doesn't know nothing at all. the use of pro tools of compressor has nothing to do with mixing engineers !!!
Hey dude, can you tell me which synth String Machine-/E-Piano- & Bass VSTi's are suiting best to compose a lovesong in pop rock/soft rock style??? The best commercial synths fitting to this category, I found out so far are: Omnisphere & Diva! Best free choices I found out: Orpheus, Proteus VX, Sampletank, Independence Free, Poly 2106, Prodigious, MT Power Drum Kit and an old NTonyx Soundbank in combination with SFZ+ soundfontplayer. One or a few suggestions of commercial plugins with one free alternative I would greatly appreciate. And thx for all your hints you gave us in your video mate, thumbs up for it!!!
I can vouch for Fab-Filter! They are an amazing company with great customer support and a huge student discount of 5-% all their plugins. They really do care about their customers :)
Hi Tom! What kind of computer/computers do you use? Are you running Windows on a Mac? Trying to decide between HP workstation or trash can Mac, tired of waiting for the new Mac Pro, if it ever comes. I do everything in Pro Tools on a Mac so Im a bit scared to move to Windows
It took me 3 days to get through this video. I am skeptical as to how many of these plug-ins he actually had to pay for out of his own pocket. I know a lot of these name producers get them for free as a professional courtesy from the developers.
I agree. u-he stuff is awesome. But I should also mention TAL Software GmbH, Memory Moon's ME80 and, surprisingly, MU Tools. Not to forget Stieinburg's Retrologue. Some of these will emulate and let you tweak the bodgey component tolerances and thermal qualities that gave so many early synths that 'phat' analog sound (by accident).
What do you think about the XILS-lab Products? I think the Synthesizers have a really fat and juicy sound (especially the XILS 4) and they have a 10 band Vocoder like the Roland VP-330 in they stock.
First of all, I thank you immensely for these absolute golden tutorials you are making for free. You are an amazing human being Tom Holkenborg! :) I have a technical question and it’d be a great help if you can shed some more light on it. Do you have separate FX channels for each of your stem groups? Or do you deliver dry stems and one master FX (reverb/delay/doubler) stem?
omnisphere 2.5 is much bigger now if you havent tryed it yet do it it have that feature HARDWARE INTEGRATION and someone who have somany synths could have maybe much fun with it
There are a few things that Omnisphere can do that no other synth can do and I've written entire tracks with a full range of sounds with just Omnisphere. But yes, it lacks some options like wavetables, the filters sound boring to me, (would like some emulated overdriven filters). It also has an ugly non vector scaling GUI.
I have a ask me anything question....I would like to know when you are done with the score do you mix the entire track in the 5.1 field or does someone else does that ? Also what sample rate are these tracks being recorded at ( live strings) ? And if you are sending stems what are included in the stems? And are you or someone else spotting them to picture ? And when mixing stems ,do you or someone else mixes these stems seperate from the entire mix...? I can see that being difficult to just mix stems without hearing everything else .and are the stems timecoded for placement? .....just explain the entire post writing process,,,thanks ...like say if you are doing the 5.1 mixing but something is not where the director wants it do you have to go back and change it? I assume you don't send all those 3000 tracks seperate for someone else to mix in 5.1 .....that would be nuts.....again thanks great videos ...and you are one hell of a nice guy....when I go out to la I want to come and meet you and talk geeky stuff.....Joey Bpav studios
Tom if I recall correctly, you need to choose the skin when you install the plugin. You'll need to reinstall OhmBoyz to get the 'funky' skin ;) I'm also a big fan for many years
If the potential hurdles (copyright, trademark, confidentiality, etc) could be overcome, partnering with Native Instruments to release those Kontakt libraries, individually, and as a bundle (Producer series) in time for Komplete Ultimate 12 would be a dream come true for many fans!
The Arturia Synclavier emulation is remarkable in many ways. First of all: The Synclavier was an early digital synthesizer - basicly an algorithm based machine so the emulation can be 1:1 if carefully done. 2. They got Cameron Jones onboard who was an engineer on New England Digital developing The Synclavier. 3. They expanded on the already rich capacity of the machine.
Tom, I'd like to know your feelings about MOTU MachFive3 and MX4. Have you ever heard of or tried Big Tick Audio's Rhino Synth? Love your channel! Thanks for sharing.
If Tom is saying he cannot afford a Synclavier than safe to assume it's beyond fking expensive! Great vid as always man enjoying seeing your go to soft Synths
For all of you lusting after the Lexicon 224 that Tom uses at the end, you can get a really great version of it by Audio Damage, called ADverb. It's based on the 224 and it has a great GUI. It's only 50 bucks as well. Not sure how much it sounds like a 'real' 224, but it is perfect for adding that real space that you only notice when you take it off. Works great on drums for ambiance and placing in a room and also for guitars and vocals as well. I've got a boat load of Reverbs, but the Audio Damage ADverb is a real workhorse. It's not really for those super long lush chorus drone verbs (use Audio Damage EOS for that), but for mixing and tracking nothing can beat it. Absolutely essential. I've got all the Valhalla Reverbs plus many many more, but the ADverb is a real keeper.
