The 70-200mm lens is a phenomenal lens that most photographers, if not all photographers, should have in their kit. It's focal lengths and image stabilization makes it versatile and great to use for most shoots. Check the video to see the pros and cons of this lens and if you should get it.
*The 70-200mm lens in the video is the IS II USM which is no longer available. The alternative is the IS III USM.
Brand New Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM: $1,899.00 (B&H, Canon USA, Adorama)
Used/Renewed/Refurbished Canon EF 70-200mmL IS II USM: $1,279.00 (Adorama)

The first switch is about the focus distance, you can set it to 1.2m so you can focus closer or to 2.5m so it won't try to focus on closer objects.

I've had two of these lenses and NEVER felt the need to fork out extra for the mk iii version (actually the first was a refurbished lens that was awful so I returned it and paid the small difference for a brand new copy). The current lens I recently purchased used, is stunning on my 1DX mkii.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
Completely agree! They don’t make the mk II anymore but I’m definitely glad I got it because I would recommend people get a used mkii than the mkiii but sorry to hear that your first one was so awful!

Hi! I'm thinking of buying my first (higher-grade) lens, wanting it to be a 70-200 f2.8 as this suits my style of photography most (horse/equine photography). Within my budget I've brought it down to the following two lenses: the tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and the canon EF 70-200 f2.8 II (mark 2). The price difference (used) is about 100€ (canon being more expensive in my country), so it's quite close to each other. But I don't know which lens is the better one...I know the canon is 7 years older, but it does seem to hold up quite nicely. And from the tamron G2 I see extremely positive reviews coming by. But how do these lenses compare? Which lens is (objectively) the better lens when it comes to image quality, sharpness, stabilisation, etc?

Hello, I have the 70-200 f/4 is II usm version, do you recommend going for the 70-200 f/2.8 is III usm version? thank you so much.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
Thanks for asking your question! Spending on what you’re shooting and the lighting situations, I personally would probably upgrade just because of the f/2.8 but if you don’t need a f/2.8 lens then I wouldn’t purchase the III version because not much has changed from vII to vIII. In the version III, they added a new coating on the glass to help with shooting outdoors and how the light is received in the lens but if you’re shooting outdoors all the time then getting a 2.8 isn’t really that necessary unless you do a lot of low light photography. Hope that helps!

Is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd version really that immense when it comes to back-lightning and sharpness ? I am very unsure wether to buy the ii or the iii because of the fact - but I am not sure if it justifies the 600€ more….

@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
In my honest opinion and with all my research online, it would depend on what you shoot but I’d say stick with the II because there’s not that much of a difference. The mechanics and glass are the same in both versions but the difference with the III is that there’s a special coating that helps prevent lens flares while shooting. If you shoot a lot outdoors or a lot of natural light then the III might be worth it but honestly, I don’t think the III is worth the extra money. I do shoot a lot of indoor/studio work with this lens so to me the price difference isn’t worth it. That’s my honest opinion. I hope that helps!

Good to hear some real life use cases. The 70-200mm gm2 is my favorite lens on my Sony a7c, I use it mostly for landscape photography. Maybe a monopod could be a worthwhile investment especially if you are are shooting on events and have stay in the same position for a long time. The "background" music is too loud, it distracts from your message.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
A monopod is definitely a great idea for steadier shots. Thanks for mentioning that and thanks for the feedback about the music! I missed that while putting the video together but thanks for staying and watching the video with that distraction!

@@ericsunphotography I own the II, not worth upgrading at all. The only difference is slightly improved contrast shooting in backlit conditions. The EF is stronger than the RF in my eyes, especially doing close up (by far less focus breathing). And the EF does not extend which has advantages in harsh conditions. But the weight is substantial with the EF.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
@@peterebel7899 Yes, I definitely agree about the extending part of the RF. I haven't used the RF 70-200 but after running into issues with the zoom part on my 24-70, I always feel some type of way about extending lenses and the weight of the EF! Propping that elbow on my hip has become my main pose with this lens 😂😂
