Simple tip on hand position to help you back the trailer with confidence! Backing trailers doesn't have to be a chore, and if you spend any time around landings, you know folks need plenty of practice!
Maybe for some, that's the way my dad did it, but for me this works well and is super easy to teach. I've walked right beside folks talking them into the water, just by seeing their hand and trailer position.
I was always told to put my hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and I always got confused which way I was going. Once I learned to put my hand on top of the wheel and turn left if the trailer was coming too far left or right if it was going too far right backing became simple for me. I call it turn into the trouble.
I was taught to hold onto the bottom of the steering wheel and turn your hand the direction you want the trailer to go. Somebody learnt me that years ago. Of course its second nature now and dont even have to think about it.
That's the way my dad did it, but since he was usually in the boat while I was backing, this is how it clicked for me. I've been able to walk beside folks on boat ramps and talk them into the water in no time. It's awesome when someone gets it right, no matter how they do it. Thanks for watching!
No I haven't, any way you can lower the pressure and sit it flat in the sun for a bit to see if it will relax? Pull the skeg so it will get totally flat. Hope that helps!
The rule I started with was "Move the bottom of the steering wheel toward the side you want the trailer to go", same result as your rule. After 50 years of driving, I still stop and explicitly think about that before, and while, backing a trailer.
I was a trucker for 28 years most schools taught backing wrong in my opinion. The easy way for me is to think nose/tail. You turn the wheel in the direction the nose needs to go to push the tail where it needs to go.
I had a heck of a time backing a short utility trailer when I was much younger. BUT then I got a 22ft cuddy cruiser on a 26ft trailer. That was when I learned that the longer the trailer is the easier it is to back up. Good demo Chris!
@@ChrisFunktheFeralOne Have you tried a riding lawn mower with a little dump box trailer? LOL I figured that one out, I disconnect the trailer and put it where I want too! Trailer wins I guess!
