Great video Matt, and thank you. I totally agree with hand fitting cause it's not only custom it is the best way for perfect tolerances. Who the hell wants a sloppy joint and mating surface,not me.

Ok well I learned about the half tenon which I will try next time, one less shoulder to fit (and Gibson will overcut it to shit and the use filler, and hide the filler under solid dark stain at the heel). TLDR: BUT what I don’t like is the idea of removing material randomly from the bass - uncut side of the neck. Why? Because now you’re changing the transverse angle of the neck so the centerline of the body is at a DIFFERENT angle than the centerline of the neck. The headstock will be ever so slightly shifted toward the player’s head. If it was extreme and the centerline of the body was the “hour hand” and the CL of the neck was the “minute hand” instead of a perfect “six-o-clock” now they read “5:59”. So following the string path the bridge and tailpiece would now have to be located slightly off-center towards the floor in playing position. You might say “true but it’s imperceptible and you can easily force it the .003” back to center and it will glue up just fine” and that’s no doubt true… however doing that you are inviting extra tension on the cut side of the tenon, which could generate a crack in the body or top 10 yrs down the road after a few seasonal shifts. Anyway Matt.. I will either not touch that side of the neck at all and do all of the “narrowing” from the treble side, or I will take a cpl ..001” off the entire length of the neck on that side. Or I’ll strike a tiny relief with a marking knife where the neck meets the body (a micro tenon shoulder) and only remove material below that mark, but trying to stay perfectly parallel (just like fitting a “Gibson” full tenon😂. Thanks for watching 😂

Awesome video Matt and yeah Guitar Work's templates are top notch indeed! For those looking to build a great jig for those Les Paul body angles check out the Myka jig! I've used them for years they are easy to build and use and there are a lot of builders on line showing how to construct one for yourself!
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 7 месяцев назад
I'll have to check that out. Thanks for posting the name of the jig too. I'm sure some folks will want to know more as well

That a pretty tight fit will put glue in the pocket,the tenon,or both,what type of glue will you be using

We always use Titebond Original for neck joints. Remember, these necks aren't even shaped yet so there is more sanding and fitting

Matt, what are the mounting tabs for on that body?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 7 месяцев назад
Great question, those are holes for the "Off Body Alignment Pins" they are the best part of the Maximum Guitar template sets. You can interchange the various templates to suit your guitar and they go on the same every time.

Huh, I always thought that the neck tenon on a LP was the way you do it I didn't realize that Gibson had both sides of the tenon shaved. Are the Jr. and Special like a Fender heel or am I wrong about that too?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 7 месяцев назад
The junior and the special do have wedge shape necks. oddly enough the V explorer and SG to name a few have a tenon.

Part of me wats to believe the Challenger just dumped itself out onto a piece of paper, you dusted off your fingernails and called it a day. I would love to see a video talking about how you got to where you are now with this design.

Hi Steve

So here’s my question about neck pockets. Why does the pocket need to be cut at an angle? Why can’t the body be cut at 90 and the neck be cut to fit?
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 7 месяцев назад
It certainly can be done that way
@deandee8082
@deandee8082 7 месяцев назад
you really do what it tight on all 3 sides, that resonation you're losing out on, yessir, to proof this concept take a strat, put a 1/16" wedge behind the neck then screw it down, pull the wedge out, play, do whatever test your resonance.. then reset the neck using your favorite technique to suck the neck tight in the pocket and proof again.. you will see its AT LEAST 20% . . . and a whole lot comes with resonance as you know so always a good idea to inure all 3 sides enjoy maximum contact, I mean it's like taping up 1/3rd the length of your johnson then having sex, why?
@HBSuccess
@HBSuccess 7 месяцев назад
I don’t agree and do you have any empirical proof that there is a “20%” loss? More resonance at the neck-body joint.. sure… and maybe that impacts how the instrument “feels” to the player (less “alive”). But that energy could ALSO be robbing energy from the string path which would actually REDUCE sustain or other frequencies at the pickups or bridge. So I’m not buying the theory. Need some objective data.

Matt is there a reason you say "ten-on" instead of "ten-en" except to annoy me? Literally never heard anyone else pronounce it this way. Anyway, love your videos, just not how you say tenon haha
@TexasToastGuitars
@TexasToastGuitars 7 месяцев назад
I don't have a reason for a lot of the things I do. As much as I like the idea of annoying people that is not it.
@christopherpcline

@@TexasToastGuitars Haha fair enough, I actually thought maybe you did it so people could learn how to spell it correctly but that didn't seem as funny as just mispronouncing it on purpose to get a rise out of pedants such as myself.
