Here I'll show you my favorite Yellow Perch rig, how to tie it, and then show you the fishing action when I put it to use. Between the great fishing and the tragic mishap at the end of the day, I'll never forget this one!

For you, or anyone that’s ants a cool little fish basket tip. Wrap a pool noodle around the top and secure it with twine or something of the sorts. Keeps the basket suspended. AND should it come untied you can surely find it drifting around haha. Sucks man, but awesome video! Gonna give it a try tomorrow.

Why tie a noodle on it when you can ziptie it for pennies,by the evidence they're already poor knot tiers with ropes and string. They make a floating basket,cost a lil more but it's about equal in price once you buy the pool noodle.I have had both,prefer the noodled one better though as I can see it better with a orange noodle..lol BTW,depending on the rope you use you can cinch to the net and boat with a Clinch.I use 1/8" (3mm) nylon cord/rope from Amazon as leashes and a leash for the basket.It has a 290lb tensile strength so it's way more than enough and it's simple to tie a Clinch with.I use two carabiners (not the cheap china/small aluminum ones),one on each end tied with a clinch.I also use the Clinch on rope up to and including 550 paracord for some stuff.

I like the smaller hooks (dropshot size), and smaller shiners for the perch. It's at least what I do for ice fishing. Their mouths are so small so a small hook and bait increases hookup.

Nice video, curious where you got your minnows. Did you buy them from a local tackle shop or did you catch them in a Minnow trap?

I sometimes do both, but early in the season I’ll usually buy them. My go to place right now is Edgemere Bait and Tackle in Sparrows Point.

My Dad was fishing on an Easter Sunday about 60 years ago and lost his fish basket full of fish.... he never went fishing on Easter Sunday after that. I only use the fish basket that has a floating plastic door on top ...works great and it will float if dropped ... came from Walmart

Thanks Cliff. It was a great day until the basket came loose. Definitely a shame on the fish especially. It would have been a great ending to snag and recover it, but it’s a lesson that’ll stick with us. Merry Christmas!

We’ve been using those collapsible screen baskets very often in Europe. It really saves a space and keeps fish alive. Keep it tight though 😂

Ziptie a pool noodle to it anywhere from the door to the very top.If it ever gets lose it'll float.

Try attaching some Styrofoam to the inside of your fish basket. It will keep the basket from sinking if it becomes untied.

@@KambotroutFishing I lost some really nice Yellow Perch when the bottom of my fish basket dropped out due to rust. After that I made one with a 5 gallon bucket. I used a 1” hole saw and drilled holes all around the sides, placed a slab of lead on the inside bottom and coated it with flex seal. I cut an opening in the lid, put hinges on what I cut out and attached it back on the lid. I attached a slide bolt on to keep the lid closed. On the inside of the lid, I attached styrofoam to make it float. I’ve been using mine for years and I have made others and given them to friends.

Really nice yellow perch anything besides bull minnows to use as bait not to many places sell minnows in December i was thinkin bout goin to the pet store n buy some guppies as bait watcha think?

Hmm. I’m not sure on the guppies. I’d check with DNR first. Some types of bait can result in invasive species being spread. The 1” gulp minnows also work very well. I usually get my minnows from Anglers or Chesapeake Outdoors on Kent Island.

I’ve only ever done the Shad run once and it was a blast. Freshwater tarpon is what they are 😜 This rig will join me on the next one! Thanks brother 🙏

Thanks David 🙏 In your region, I think Liberty Reservoir and Prettyboy Reservoir would be your best bets. Especially the northern portion of Prettyboy Reservoir. To find creeks and rivers like those in this video though, you’ll likely have to fish tributaries to the Chesapeake, especially on the eastern shore. Thanks for watching!

Using a slip bobber shouldn’t be a problem at all 👍 Some depths I don’t use a bobber at all, but in those places I use one, using a slip bobber should work just fine.

Good stuff Steve I use that same drop knots for saltwater top and bottom and Flounder rigs I feel the same about about the fish I target any responsible fisherman or Human for that matter should Merry Christmas!

What lake is this and how do u go about finding the perch?

Hey K I. This was on a river on MD’s eastern shore, but I don’t provide exact locations to smaller waters which could become overpressured and overfished. Finding the yellow perch in MD is usually a game of understanding where and when they go to spawn. In MD, they usually have spawning runs in late winter (late January through late February). During that time, they’ll push into the upper portions of tidal rivers to spawn and lay their eggs on submerged timber and other similar structure. Great video! Do you use a colored leadhead at upper position for color attraction? Have you used a plain hook at upper position and gotten less hook ups there. TYhanks

Thanks much Steve and yes, I often use colored jigheads at either or both positions. I've also used a bare hook at the upper positions and done well with it, but I prefer colored jigheads. Thanks for watching!

Fun watch gentlemen, next time you use that fish basket, tie it so the door flap is just above the water line. Then you can drop the fish in without lifting the basket every time. It's a more efficient way when the bite is hot. I'm going to hit the like and subscribe now.

Merry Christmas Matt! I’ve used this rig to vertically jig before, but today they wanted it on the bottom. I would let it sit for 10-15 seconds (on a tight line) then move it 1-3 inches. Very slow presentation.

I don't give locations on bodies of water this small. They'd be overrun very quickly with pressure, overharvest, and trash. However, for a small hint, this was MD's eastern shore.
