Thank you for such a great video. I spent a while looking for book recomendations and with the last video I watched, guy was like "this book is so good", "this other book is so good" while saying absolutely nothing about what the books were about ::facepalm:: I almost gave up, but you absolutely shine through and got me hyped for some of these, thank you!
Just finished reading priory of the orange tree I read black sun a month ago I really enjoyed both books can't wait for the bone shard emperor I absolutely enjoyed the city of brass trilogy 😊🙂🤠
I would recogmend Robin Hobb's relm of the elderlings series for female writen fantasy. They are epic, grim and will crush your heart, but they are sooo good, especially if you are a caracter driven reader. Hobb's first triology was not my fav. but omg! the books just get better and better 😍
The audiobook narrator for 'The Priory of the Orange Tree' is 👏🏻 phenomenal 👏🏻 Also, glad to see 'Black Sun' was included on your list. I devoured it the first time I read it! And now I am re-reading/buddy reading it with my best friend 😆
Wow. I was just checking out different book sites on YT and ended up here. I was half asleep; I pushed play and you proceeded to deliver one of the most epic, damn near unhinged monologues about your book list and various other subjects that you managed to inject into the flow without missing a beat or stopping to see if we were keeping up with you. It was hugely entertaining and I even managed to jot down some of the books you were recommending. I subscribed on the spot, which means no nap because now I have to look up your other videos and catch up. Kudos, That was pretty OG for a book nerd.
I started the Shades of Magic trilogy because of one of your previous videos and I love it. So thank you! Black female fantasy authors: YA fantasy - The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton Adult fantasy - The Inheritance Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin
Great video! And I love the honest adulting IRL chat. As for AoC Fantasy recs, Rebecca Roanhorse's Tail of Lightning and Storm of Locuts Are spectacular and raw Native American folklore based fantasy novels. N.K Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, is an epic fantasy that definitely will leave you thinking about it for years and years after you finish reading it. And I know this is technically YA, but Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is a FANTASTIC fantasy novel that it beautiful and powerful.
I actually just finished the Priory and god was it amazing. I as always come late to parties but it is quite long and honestly without the days I had off of work it would’ve been unbearable to put down the book. Like yes, give me magic, and politics, and fanatical religious idiots getting told the truth, and dragons, and badass women, and queerness. It was amazing. Now I’m looking to read The Bone Shard Daughter because I also took it upon myself to buy the second book. Also The Black Sun I’m very excited for.
Love this video! I would recommend Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner which is set in a city where the nobility hire swordsmen to settle arguments with each other. It focuses on the most popular swordsman for hire and his self-destructive lover. It’s beautiful and witty and the characters are politely savage
If you're looking for BIPOC authors, I would suggest N.K. Jemison who wrote the Broken Earth trilogy and The City We Became, amongst others, and also Rivers Solomon who is nonbinary as well, and wrote An Unkindness of Ghosts and The Deeps.
black (AFAB/non male) authors of adult fantasy (several also do sci fi) Tanarive Due -African Immortals series Nnedi Okorafor Who Fears Death? , Laggon, Zahrah the Windseeker NK Jemisin-already recommended Octavia Butler has several fantasy series Rivers Solomon - The Deep Akwaeke Emezi-Freshwater -Afia Atakora-Conjure Women Andrea Hairston-Will Do Magic for Small Change, Master of Poisons Karen Lord-Redemption In Indigo i doubt youll see this since you get so many comments but hope this helps and forgive any name typos, my spelling is shite
Great choices....love many of the same writers. Arden I have right up there with Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo, as my top/favorite writers. Schwab is high, as well...and both Arden and Schwab even have middle grade series that are very good. Also, I was just notified yesterday that Sabaa Tahir's next book comes out the beginning of March 2022. Will be interesting to see what she gives us after her great quartet series...letting you know, since I know you enjoy her writing as well.
So my current TRB shelf is mostly from.books you've brought up...... so on that note I've got Space Opera on my shelf to be read soon, but... apparently I need more things from Valente? Deathless sounds *amazing* and I am also apparently gonna be buying "The Past is Red" by her next time I buy books... which must be soon because the latest Becky Chambers is out I'm Canada and I HAVE A NEED (but no time...) Also, I would love to see another video focusing on Adult fiction by women authors (in this and/or other genres)!
Anything VE Schwab , I just love so much. The poppy War is another favorite of mine, such a good series! The Priory of the Orange Tree is high on my list to read very soon as well!
I would recommend tanith lee, I just read 2 books from her, but they were very good, volkhavaar and night master, imagine dark and beautiful fantasy, like a mix of gaiman or something from Tim Burton. sometimes weird, sometimes confortable and sometimes really wonderful While volkhavaar is a story about Shaina, a slave saving a prince who's been kidnapped by an evil mage, night master its like a collection of fantasy stories equally dark and equally beautiful (plus, the new covers from the flat earth series are really cool)
