My sister is one of those people who don’t consider “listening to audiobooks isn’t real reading” and trying to explain to her how that ableist she missed the point. But a good audiobook (if your into memoirs) is Dear Girls, by Ali Wong.
I can understand if in the past, people didn’t count audiobook as reading / a way of enjoying books. But these days? C’mon! It’s an old news. Life is too short to trashing audiobooks.
I listened to Sadie this month, and oh my god, it was PERFECT! The podcast bits were my favorite to listen to (even though Sadie's chapters were my favorite story-wise), and it really sounded like an actual true crime podcast. I really wanna try I'll Be The One and You Should See me in a Crown now too. One of my favorite audiobooks has to be The Poet X, which is narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo herself; it's sooooo fucking good!
I'm glad you explained how different genres work make for a better audiobook experience. I agree, fantasy and sci fi books are hard to listen to. But most other genres I really enjoy audiobooks.
I just listened to the audiobook of Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo and it was amazing. Also enjoyed The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds-Reed.
THE EDITING!!!! TRULY AMAZING! Soooo many good recs of books I haven't come across before! I am particularly interested in The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane!
I always try to mention how the conversation around people saying listening to the audiobooks is not real reading is ableist, as I too suffer from lots of mental health a lot of concentration issues, but sometimes it seems like talking to a void. However hearing you start your video with this message, actually had me tearing up. Ahaha I didn’t expect it, but it’s nice to be seen, so thank you so much for saying that! I really appreciate it ❤️❤️✨✨
yess listening to audiobooks is definitely reading!! i’m still soooo easily distracted with audiobooks so i haven’t read any so i agree with the first part you said!
I love listening to audiobooks, but if I don't like the narrator I can't get through it. My favorite audiobook narrator is Julia Whelan, she is amazing.
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman is another amazing audiobook. He reads it and basically retells a bunch of norse mythology stories and it was just so well done.
If you liked The Turn of The Key (like I did!!) then I really recommend Ruth Ware's latest one in audiobook: One By One. It's the same narrator and I loved it!!
Thanks so much for this video, I only started listening to audiobooks last year and I'm still trying to work out what genres I like listening to. I've mostly been sticking to non-fiction (Becoming by Michelle Obama has been my favourite so far this year) but I really want to try more fiction! I read the physical copy of The Turn of the Key but I recommended it to my friend and she listened to the audiobook. Apparently it scared her so much she could only listen to it when her boyfriend was home 😂
I have been wanting to get more into Audiobooks. I will have to try some of these. I have yet to find one I can focus on or retain, so it may just be me but i want to love them!
I have the complete opposite opinion on Sadie, I loved the story, but had to buy the physical book because I just can not deal with ensemble cast audiobooks, lol. But that's the key to accessibility: OPTIONS. I want to recommend a couple of books that truly come to life as audiobooks: Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo, and Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. Honorable mentions to Sex Power Money by Sarah Pascoe, and This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay. Because you talked about P. Djeli Clark's Haunting of the Tram Car 015, I found my new favourite author! I ADORE his work SO MUCH! Thank you for the rec and I'm hoping you'll find something new and exciting from my recommendations
Zo blij dat je mental health icm audioboeken aankaart. 🙏🏻 💕 ADD’er hier en ik herken me hier wel in, al zijn er ook dagen dat ik audioboeken verschrikkelijk vind. 😔
audible information doesn’t stick in my brain at all... the struggles of transcribing teacher’s lessons so i can understand them. does anyone listen to audio while reading the physical books at the same time? or is this not a thing.
I needed it! I am starting in listening to books and I loving the experience. It really works to me because I am so exhausted in work/study/bus live and be able to just listen is so relaxing
