I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I also enjoy the Rumpole stories and I used to watch the Stephan Fry and Hugh Laurie portrayals of Jeeves and Wooster on TV. Thank you for the other wonderful suggestions. Just your descriptions of some of these books made me smile.
I appreciate your description of the books. So often people don’t describe why I may or may not want to read something. And ultimately that’s why I’m here. Other than to see you :)
I have several of the books you recommend in my Persephone collection which are on top of my TBR list. I have been wanting to read the Lucia books but...well so many books so little time! And, of course, your video has me adding to my list. I read the James Herriot books long ago and just finished watching the Public Television version of part of his series. This has made me want to reread these books. Oh, yes, please, a home tour would be wonderful.
I don't have my Jennings books any more but I do remember I laughed a lot when reading them. I also laugh at P G Wodehouse! I love Gerald Durrell, James Herriot, The Darling Buds of May, Frederica (Felix is priceless), and Rumpole. You have given me others to think about too.
Hello, I'm French and I've been following you since a while. I like your accent and the rhythm of your spelling because I can understand pretty easily all what you say. Il like the contents of your critics and analyses of the books you read. I try sometimes to pick up some advice you give, when I think I will be able to read them without too many difficulties. You are so smart and beautiful. I like when you are with your mum to cook but your recipes are too difficult for me, I can only long for them ! Your home is so cosy too. You look like Jane Austen, or someone like her. I hope you will continue to make your videos for a long time. Sorry for my poor English, I don't practice very much but I read a lot (every day) and I listen to BBC and book tubers like you. Thank you very much.
Your channel is a recent find for me and I love your content Miranda 😊 I've had James Herriot's books on my wishlist for a while now, they sound great x
What fantastic recommendations Miranda! And for once, I haven't had to put many on my list because I love British humor and have read a lot. You brought back fond memories of mentioning Rye, as my literary travels around England led me to Lamb House. Thanks for another brilliant video and sharing your precious books and readings with us. xxx
Brilliant recommendations Miranda! I have just bought Excellent Women after watching a previous video and now going to try some Georgette Heyer novels! Thankyou 💕
Brilliant subject and list. I've decided to graduate to a notebook to keep a list of books I need to find. The previous way of keeping track of your suggestions on slips of paper just isn't cutting it. 😂I love your lists so much. Thank you. See you next time.💕👍
Same here! Just the other day I too had to graduate to a little notebook after amassing so many little notes after having discovered Miranda's delightful (and now my favorite) channel a couple weeks ago! Love to see others enjoying vintage books too! 😂📚
Wonderful video, Miranda, and some great recommendations. My favourite funny childhood series of books was Goscinny and Sempe's Nicholas series. As an adult, I also enjoyed Tom Sharpe's writing, especially Blott on the Landscape. But I have to say the bit that made me laugh with tears recently was Anne Fadiman's essay in the Ex Libris collection which was all about the heroic failure element of real life British arctic expeditions where they neglected to pack vital items but had made sure they carried on them monogrammed silver cutlery and tins of button polish. You just have to love the British, can't have any drop in standards!
Awe I do hope the boiler is working for you soon. Sending you and your mum warmth wishes. Great selection of 'laugh out loud' books. Likewise I regularly return to all PG Wodehouse for a feel good humourous uplift - I love The Blandings series with Empress the prize 🐖 pig. Great video Miranda
So many great suggestions here for books to raise a smile or to get us laughing out loud! Many of these are favourites of mine, too, particularly Wodehouse and Joyce Dennys. I only came across Business as Usual about 3 days ago, and I'm waiting for my copy to arrive from Blackwells. So glad it gets your recommendation! I'd never heard of The Ascent of Rum Doodle - what a great title, it sounds a lot of fun. I think the Jane Duncan 'My Friend....' series would sit well amongst these choices. And a book of funny and slightly eccentric letters that I've enjoyed and re-read is Dear Lupin by Charlie and Roger Mortimer. Another lovely video, as always! Good luck getting your boiler fixed 🥶!
So many great recommendations! I love Nora Ephron's funny essay collections. She has this one story about the split at the back of her hair which she called her "Aruba," I think, and how no one ever tells you when your Aruba is showing 😂 I read it aloud at my hairdressers once. Much laughter ensued. 😄
Well, where to start.....what an excellent collection! You had me chuckling out loud, it was lovely to watch, you clearly enjoyed sharing your books with us 😂 I have some of the books you mentioned and will be buying so many more off your list. I listen to a lot of books on audible when I’m sewing or out with the dogs, Martin Jarvis, Ian Carmichael and Leo McKern make great companions 🥰 I hope you get your boiler sorted soon, didn’t you have problems with it a little while ago 😬
Fantastic choices! I loved EF Benson's Paying Guests as well as the Mapp and Lucia series. Nothing will beat Wodehouse for making me laugh out loud, though.
Thank you for another wonderful video! You included so many of my favourite comic books and described them so well, I was laughing along with you, and now I want to reread them all! Like you, William Brown was my first introduction to comic books, as a child, and I still love them today although Wodehouse is definitely top of my list of comic writers. A few titles you spoke about are new to me so I am going to add them to my list. I love that you recommend great audiobook narrators as I am very particular about narrators! I completely agree about Jonathan Cecil, he is perfect reading Wodehouse and really does add to the enjoyment.
Another delightful video, Miranda! Before I even watched this today, I had started listening to My Man Jeeves on audible while doing housework! Enjoying it! Love British wit and humor. Now you make me want to try more PG Wodehouse! And just last night my mom and I watched an episode of All Creatures Great and Small, we love the books and show (original series). Thank you again for your lovely videos! See ya Wednesday! 📚😃❤️
Had a great chuckle today thank you Miranda I too just needed that little bit of funny medicine. Im off now to relisten [many times] of my audio copy of Diary of a Nobody. No boiler is a bit of a problem in northern climes . Lots more cosy fireside reads in store no doubt. Thank you once again you are real gem..
Thank you for another perfect selection. I love Martin Jarvis reading Blandings. His voice for Lord Emsworth is hilarious and his comic timing is spot on. James Herriot narrating his own books never fails to have me laughing. I'd never heard of the Rum Doodle one but it sounds brilliant.
So many good ones! I laughed along with you when you mentioned Mr. Collins! Haven’t read ‘21/2 Pillars of Wisdom’ or ‘Eggs, Beans & Crumpets’ and I know l’ll enjoy them. Hopefully all is well again now🤞
I really enjoyed watching you talk about enjoying these books. You had me laughing. I read a few of them and I love the ones that I had read. I am a huge Barbara Pym and E M Delefield fan. I can pick up a book from either one of these authors and if it’s a dreary day they will always make me feel better. Some of the other books I own but I haven’t read any of them so I need to start reading them. Thank you for your recommendations, I always look forward to them.
Perfect timing! I'm in desperate need of some proper cheer up. "The Ascent of Rum Doodle" sounds like a lot fun and quite a accurate description of my hiking adventures. Had Donna read the newest Jackson Lamb book?
This is so fun! I've recently read Ben Schott's continuation of the Jeeves and Wooster stories and they are really funny, too. I just finished reading A Glass of Blessings by Barbara Pym, and Wilmet, the heroine, has a good sense of humor. I really enjoyed her perspective on all the characters she interacts with. I've got so many great books to read now, thank you!
Lovely recommendations indeed! have you tried Gwen Raverat’s ‘Period Piece’ definitely laugh out loud for me. Also there’s a series of books about a school inspector checking on children In rural Yorkshire. Gerard something but I can’t check as my bookcases are downstairs and I am currently laid up.
Wonderful selection. You have given me so many new recommendations and new discoveries to add to my expanding list. Some old favourites that I remember and now want to read again. Thank you Miranda, you are such a precious gem of a find. I do enjoy your videos so very much xx
So happy to see such fun and joyful books! Thank you for sharing these, Miranda! My favorites are Pride & Prejudice, Darling Buds of May, Diary of a Provincial Lady and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. I'm really excited to read the Mapp & Lucia series, more P.G. Wodehouse, Business As Usual, Diary of a Nobody and Henrietta's War. I'm reading Mrs. Tim and the Regiment right now and loving every minute of it! I wish I had some suggestions for you :( Have a wonderful day and I hope your heat comes back on soon. Sending warm hugs! xoxo
This was an excellent video! I love Wodehouse so much, especially as narrated by Jonathan Cecil. I’m adding just about all of these to my Audible and Amazon wishlists, so I can start getting them. I’m definitely getting Just William, Three Men in a Boat and maybe some Rumpole on Audible tonight!
Hi, Miranda, I think I’ve read about a third of your recommendations. I particularly like the Mapp and Lucia books, I thought they were all hilarious. I didn’t know Mapp and Lucia was the first as I read the trilogy set in Rhisolme where Lucia lived before moving to Tilling. Have you read them all? There’s also two sequels, one of which is set in the war, not written by Benson as it was after his time, but it’s based on the same characters. Lucia in War Time by Tom Holt. He’s done a fantastic job of recreating the characters and moving the story onwards. I don’t know what the second sequel is, do you? Thanks for this Miranda, I hope your boiler is up and running again. I’m originally from Yorkshire, I know how freezing it can be.
I always forget about Queen Lucia, as for me the series really starts when Miss Mapp & Lucia are in the same book! I haven’t read Tom Holt’s books, but I’ll have to give them a go! Thanks - I hope it’s fixed soon too 🤞
@@MirandaMills Miss Mapp which is the title of one of the books; (Lucia isn’t in that one if I remember rightly) is very funny. If you haven’t read that one already I’m sure you’ll like it!
Hello Miranda. Thank you for all of these wonderful comedy book recommendations. I am going to watch it again with a pen and paper to write down the titles of many of them. They all sound very enjoyable to me. I hope some are available on Kindle. I know actual paper copies will probably be hard to track down here in the US. The rings you have been wearing look very beautiful. Is one of them your birthstone? Looking forward to visiting with you and your mom on Friday if not before. Take care.....Crystal.
