Hi friends!
One of the goals I have set myself over the last few years is to read at least one classic that scares me every year. What I have found is that a lot of them are far less intimidating and much more accessible to read than I had thought.
Here are some of my favourites that I have read along the way!

Thank you for all the recommendations! I’m so intimidated by classics and scared I won’t enjoy them so thank you for inspiring me to start 😍💗

I feel pretty intimidated by them too, but it is such a wonderful feeling to read one and discover that it was not so scary after all 😂💛

A glorious selection! And wow, I don't think I've ever seen someone talk about Basil & Jopsephine ever before :) As for my own favorites: I'm a huge Virginia Woolf fan, but I do understand how those books are not everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks for watching! I’ve yet to read a Virginia Woolf novel, but I have To The Lighthouse on my bookshelves and keep meaning to pick it up.

I’m glad I found your channel. I’m just starting to get back into Classics and there are a few you mention Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the short story collection by F Scott Fitzgerald, that I need to read. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more. Aloha

Thank you so much 💛 Yes he has so many short stories! Benjamin Button is probably his most popular short story and definitely worth a read too!

It has been written that author Mark Twain/ Samuel Clemens didn't like when people called his books classics, and once commented.. " A classic is a book which is universally praised but nobody actually reads them." I liked your review of 'And then there were none' That might be a good candidate for my summer reading. Thanks! :)

Haha, well I can certainly see where that comment comes from. A “classic” can take on a little bit of an air of superiority which has definitely scared me off sometimes! I hope you enjoy And Then There Were None if you do read it. It’s truly one of my favourites when it comes to Agatha Christie 🔍

Classics can be intimidating- even though I have a masters degree in German and comparative literature there’s always a fear before starting reading one. 😄 You recommended a few of my faves. Have you read anything by e.t.a. Hoffmann? He was a German writer and really shaped the gothic/ dark romantic genre. I recommend Nachtstücke (strange stories) by him. Thank you for your great videos!

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in the classics fear!😊 Oh I haven't read anything by him, thank you so much for the recommendation - I will certainly look this one up! 💛

Notre Dame de Paris is a great read, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. For me, it was a conscious decision to avoid reading anything else in translation. So, now I"m reading the French classics in the original. It's much easier than I thought it would be, tho it is a bit time-consuming. However, time is something I have in abundance these days. Thx - enjoyed your presentation.

I wish I could read French better so that I could have appreciated the novel in its original form! It took me a couple of different translations to find one that felt right, but once I did the story came alive. I am always so in awe of translators for making stories from around the world accessible to so many more people. (But I am sure that the original is always best!)

@@readerinareverie Yes, I imagine the scene where they wanted to hang the playwright was tricky, as it must contain some comedy. Also, the resolution of that scene was so unexpected a translator must run the risk of sounding silly.

Hi! I'd recommend The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. It's big but you go through it very fast! I shocked myself when I finished it in a week which is very rare for me as I'm the slowest reader ever.
