I really need to check out his work. Everyone keeps raving about it but I’m not sure if I’ll be into it or not. Thanks for unpacking his stuff so I could get a glimpse.
You can always check out the webcomic he did for the guardian here and find out if you like it: www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2014/sep/13/-sp-chris-ware-the-last-saturday-graphic-novel
Wow, this is an amazing esssy. When you first showed us Chris art I thought "I don't find it interesting" but then bang! You said all the right words on how his comics are the contrary and I should definitely read them. Thanks for recommend us his work and I hope to see more of your wonderful videos.
Thank you so much! These video essays in particular take ages to make, but I'm going to keep the thumbnail very consistent (white bg and black letters illustration at the top) so that if you're interested in these videos, you can spot them easily 😁. And yeah, you should definitely give Ware’s comics a chance. They don't look very appealing but they are amazing.
That's what everyone says when I mention I love Chris Ware 😂 I didn't like the art either, in fact I still don't like it much. But it works really well for the story telling.
Interesting video, I must say that RU-vid isn't exactly the place where you can find a thoughtful analysis on comics, while this video shows one or two things that make Ware the giant he is. Is Lint a complete book or do you think it can still be expanded? I mean like Rusty Brown and Jimmy Corrigan. I don't usually buy Acme, only the completed works, but if Lint is so I'm going to buy it. For the next video do what you like, ofc. Maybe european or argentinian if you want to diversificate. Just to name a few of my favourite comic artist from that part: Alberto Breccia, Marc-Antoine Mathieu, Toppi, Mattotti, Tardi, Jorge Gonzalez, Pedrosa, De Crecy, Moebius, Bilal, Crepax, Lauzier, etc. If you want some one that experiments with the architecture of comics, you should check Marc-Antoine Mathieu. Have a nice day.
Thank you for the suggestions! I was definitely thinking about doing a European comic next. As for Argentinian comics I like Macanudo strips and I grew up reading Quino, but I'm not familiar enough to say much about them, unfortunately. Lint is classed as an acme novelty book, but it is a monographic on the character just as much as the other graphic novels. So I would recommend it!
@@TeresadelPilar I've seen that Lint is included in Rusty Brown volume, so I guess I just have to buy Rusty when it comes out here. By the way which one do you prefer between Jimmy Corrigan and Building Stories? I'm for the latest.
@@OdysseyMichele I was very impressed with the formating of Building Stories. How it makes it so that the order of reading affects the way in which you understand and read each scene. So you're building your own narrative by choosing the order of reading. So in that sense, building stories is better. But Jimmy, oh man. I love that story, how him and his family develop, the way the stories connect and the way it lays out 3 generations worth of family drama. So story wise, and emotianilly speaking, Jimmy Corrigan is better imo.
I’ll be honest, the design of Chris Ware’s work has weirdly repelled me. The sterile perfection in style and composition makes me uncomfortable. I understand that is intended (and an accomplishment that can only live on the pages of a comic) but, plainly, it’s something I don’t enjoy 😊 What a great dive into his work, though. I really like these breakdowns that you do Teresa. I think it would be rad to hear about your favorite manga, or why (in general) you think manga is so popular. It would be great if you broke down work that wasn’t your favorite, maybe even exploring things you didn’t like. That way, you could take requests (like Jeff Smith’s Bone or Miyazaki’s Nausicaa) but it wouldn’t become a giant loss if it didn’t resonate with you.
Yeah, his style is a bit plain and off putting. When I got Jimmy Corrigan I did it because of the title, I found it intriguing. I knew nothing about him. And then, when I saw the art style. I remember I was so unimpressed that I ñ wished I hadn't bought it 😂 About manga, my previous video essay is about a manga author 😁 My intent is to get a variety of genres and styles in this series. As for taking requests for authors I don't like, there's no one I don't like really. But I definitely love Jeff Smith and Miyazaki. However, this videos take a lot of energy and I make them for fun so it would be a bit too much to do a whole research into something I find boring.
