My Favourite Sleeping Pads | Camping Sleep System For Side Sleepers.

I have been using the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated sleeping pad for the past year and discuss what I look for in a sleeping pad when backpacking and wild camping.
As a side sleeper it has taken a while to find the ideal pad where I do not wake up during the night or in the morning with sore hips or shoulders.
When it comes to choosing a sleeping pad it all really falls into three categories. The sleeping pads weight, comfort and it’s insulation value.
A thick Inflatable sleeping pad such as the Sea to Summit range has been my choice for several years. In this video I discuss the benefits of the the pads that I currently own and my reasons for choosing and using them.

Been using that same mat (the StS one, insulated) since last spring or so, and I love it. I know it doesn't have the highest R-rating, which I've felt during the really cold nights in the winter, but the rest of the year its amazing. I love the valve, I love the pump sack that comes with it (it's also the sotrage bag if you want to store it in that). The comfort is way above any other mat I've had, really is. I usually fill it up completely, then take just a slight amount of air out so it's not so hard/springy. Seriously good to sleep on. Also, another point to using the trash bag or something similar to pack in, instead of all the packing stuff sacks that products like the mat comes with (other then all the great points you made), is that packing it that way doesn't lead to as many consistent ways of rolling/folding/packing it. You can be more "random", and that leads to less folding on the same 'seams', which prolongs the products lifespan. I notice this when using a stuff sack, the folds tend to go in the same place, and like you said, it uses the space of the pack better when not using the stuffsacks. Cheers!

Good info on sleeping mats, I agree. One thing you could also try is using a blanket, instead of a sleeping bag. When you sleep in the sleeping bag, the bottom is crushed with you weight, and does not insulate you in any way, so think of your £500 sleeping bag only worth £250 cause it's only heating your top half. If you get a good camping down blanket, this will save you possibly money, weight and space, and use a good sleeping mat as you say. It's going to be the cold from the ground that will get you first. Thanks for another great video.

Thank you Ray, great advice and tips. Now on the lookout for a new mat, I’ve been using thermarest neo air xlite for some time now, and although I like the small pack size and lightweight, I just cannot get comfortable on the thing, also it sounds like a rustling crisp packet, time to take the hit with comfort over weight. Going to try the packing technique, think I could save so much time and wasted space here... thanks again... ATB 👍

I prefer to use insulated self-inflating extra wide mats in the 1.2kg to 3.3kg range and 7mm to 12mm thick and at least 64cm to 78cm wide. Comfort is paramount wherever I sleep, whether it is in a car or on top of a mountain in winter. Carrying that extra weight is well worth it when it means enjoying a full nights sleep anywhere and in all weather conditions, more often without a tent.

I have the sts xt insulated I love it. On it's own I find fine to about 0c or so but below that I use a sheet of ripstop aluminium weights next to nothing and pretty much covers the year for me in the uk. Did try a neoair a few years ago being a side sleeper kept feeling like I was rolling off it ☹ it's a shame the xt doesn't have the double chamber like the comfort insulated piece of mind in the winter
@oling2812
@oling2812 3 года назад
Great video Ray. I have been using the STS Ether Light XT Insulated the last few months on multiple camps and absolutely love it. A lot of folks are obsessed with only weight and R Value but really the R Value (warmth) is only one side of the comfort of a pad. For me, the Ether Light balances by far the best comfort I've experienced with a decent R Value for solid 3 season use and maybe even a little into Winter on milder days. Additionally, it's a much quieter pad than, say, the Thermarest Neo Air X Lite and I really dislike the horizontal baffles on the Thermarest which make you slide off. One thing I noticed is that in your video, you don't seem to top the pads off with a breath of two of air directly into them to firm them up? They seem a little slack when inflated and I've found that they aren't as warm when I don't blow them up completely? Would be interested in hearing of your experience here.
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 3 года назад
Prefer to have less air as I find it more comfortable. But as you say may affect warmth slightly. I plan to try it as a winter pad by using a cheap 10mm foam roll mat underneath. That also stops your pad sliding about on a silnylon ground sheet as well.

Hello Ray.. Spot on video. I have been looking around to update my wife's sleeping pad. I use the Neo air x Therm max Large all year round and its a very comfortable mat but a pain to put up, even with the sack. I think its a bit over the top for summer lol. I did buy a cheaper mat for summer the Alpkit cloud base but its crap and cheap as you said my shoulders fall off it and my hips dig into the ground. I'm thinking on trying something different like the Sea to Summit Ether mats for her to use or just stick to another Thermarest. she likes to be warm so it will have to be a all year round one lol. I agree mats need to be comfortable to enjoy your camping experience. Sorry this is long Ray but I need something to do and something for you to read. lol. Steve.

Thanks Steve and know how you feel about needing something to do. Have been through a good few mats until I settled on those two as I also found them either cold or nothing like the reviews said about comfort, etc. Would add like in comment above is Sea to Summit do a woman's version of this pad which i think may be a better shape and think it is slightly warmer. Was going to get one for myself originally ;) Atb

Ray I use the Thermarest x therm all year round. Im a side sleeper and it is by far the best for support and i can get away with a lithe weight bag for most of the year. Couldn't agree more on sacrificing weight for comfort..... spent many a night uncomfortable on an ultra light sleeping pad just to shave a few grams.... it's one of the main reasons I invested in an exped down ul winter. Admittedly it's on the heavy side but it's warm and comfy as hell!! It's a bit of overkill for most of the year which is why I just got myself a trekology ul 80.. crackin mat for the price if I'm honest... just need to get it out for a proper test when all this blows over..

Some great advice... torn between the Sea to Summit Etherlight XT and the Thermarest NeoAir UberLite for hiking. Not sure if you had a look into it... packing size looks great with the Thermarest, but just not sure if the mat might slip around too much being so light. Plus not sure about durability and noise either... might trade some packing space and weight for a bit more robust version with the Sea to Summit.
@RS.Outdoors
@RS.Outdoors 4 года назад
Thought the same but to be honest for the extra weight the StoS it is worth it for the comfort and great nights sleep I get with it. Atb
@jurajkotian1
@jurajkotian1 3 года назад
It is completely different animal. UberLite is from very thin, temperature-unstable silky material. The pad does not isolate too much, you can end up easily on ground during cold nights as the pad looses air pressure/height with lower temperatures. Unless you are perfectly levelled, you will slide with/from it whole night. It can be OK for warm summer nights or for sleeping at the floor in cottage. NEMO Tensor and StS Etherlight XT are far more comfortable and the later the best choice for 3-seasons pad.
@kevinklein4748
@kevinklein4748 3 года назад
@@jurajkotian1 yup, realised later that the UeberLight is an ultra lightweight one season mat, ideal for summer backpackers. Quite impressive for the weight and packed size, but as you say it has of course no insulation as it's designed for camping in warmer temperatures ... so if you need a 3 season sleeping mat, then the Ether Light XT will be the heavier but still lightweight and more versatile gear. Also happy with its sprung cell technology, and relatively quiet when moving around on it. However, as with all mats, regular means small and large means regular when it comes to picking the right size... no clue how the really tall guys get around this, but size large is just perfect for me and I'm only 5"8...
