I was really disappointed to see Pinocchio (2022) didn’t get more love. But hey, at least Pinocchio (2022) was nominated for best animated film. Luckily, Pinocchio (2022) is nowhere near any other categories because it was terrible.
@@jorssu13 I also don't want him to win, no offense to the guy, I'm sure he's good fella but we need to stop giving awards to people who mimic some old celebrity or whatever. I might even go as far as saying ban biopics. I've had enough!
Exactly. I ran into some whacks saying modern movies suck or whatever when the problem is they're either deep into their prejudices or they only care about franchises.
Everything Everywhere all at once winning is important because for the last 20 Years, The Oscars have only really highlighted The Weinstein Style of Oscar Bait that he produced and presented specifically for these awards. This would be a fresh start alongside movies like moonlight to break that.
Our Oscar predictions are basically the same except I think yeoh wins best actress because the narrative that has arisen around her is making it impossible not to give it to her
Narrative around her? The Oscar should in theory go to the best female performance of that year. I understand the significance and even the importance of giving Yeoh the Oscar but that's not what the award is for. It's for merit. If Yeoh had the better performance give it to Yeoh, if Blanchett had the better performance, give it to Blanchett.
@@regularfilmphotographer9807 I agree. I think the Oscar’s recognize this too by giving out the lifetime achievement awards. Those awards are for the narrative and the career
I really want Michelle Yeoh to win Best Actress. She's been overlooked for years, and it would be an amazing (and long overdue) moment of representation at the Oscars. Cate Blanchett's performance is great, but like you said, she already has two Oscars to her name. I would much rather see Yeoh win Best Actress than the Daniels win Best Director or EEAAO win Best Picture (although I'm sure it will win).
Austin Butler did more than an amazing. Gave up almost 3 years of his life preparing Elvis through 3 decades. His got high praises from Denzel and all the Presleys. That speaks volumes.
i swear, and i hate to be *that* guy, especially since jacksfilms beat me to it, but these youtube comments are getting worse every single day!! proofread your shit! 🤣🤣 “more than an amazing” wtf?!
My personal Oscar picks (not predictions) Picture: Tár/Banshees Director: Field/McDonagh Actor: Butler Actress: Blanchett Supporting actor: Keoghan Supporting Actress: Hsu Original screenplay: Tár/Banshees Adapted screenplay: AQOTWF/Women Talking International feature: AQOTWF Documentary: All that breathes Animated feature: Pinocchio Score: Babylon Song: Naatu naatu Cinematography: Bardo/ AQOTWF Editing: Top Gun Maverick/ EEAAO Production design: Babylon Costumes: Wakanda Forever/ EEAAO Makeup/Hair: The Whale VFX: Avatar 2 Sound: Top Gun Maverick Haven't watched all the nominees of live action short, documentary short and animated short so no comment on those.
Over on the Settling the Score podcast they ranked the score nominees in pretty much the opposite order to these odds and I can't disagree. In terms of the music in relation to the actual film, I've gotta agree with them
I think a lot of people are over-indexing on “narrative” when talking about Michelle Yeoh. SAG has always focused a lot on narrative especially since merging with AFTRA and thus expanding the voting pool to non-filmmakers. However the Academy voting pool is quite different and historically voters have been driven less by narrative. I expect this to go the same way BAFTAs did. Additionally, Academy voters have been known to spread the love (i.e not vote for the same movie across all categories), and currently EEAAO has a lock on pretty much every other category besides best actress ( I think they will get supporting actress too). I hypothesize that a lot of voters saw best actress as the only chance to break the EEAAO streak and “spread the love”.
After seeing Brendan Fraser in ‘The Whale’, I now continue to question why David Zaslov & Warner Bros. Discovery thought that canceling the Batgirl movie was a good idea. I might make my own RU-vid Video on this topic...
I've watched both Tar and EEAAO and I disagree that Cate delivered a better acting performance than Michelle Yeoh because Cate's performance is quite predictable trying to hit all the points to win the oscar. It's kinda the typical boring oscar-baiting dramatic acting performance. It doesn't mean that her performance is sh*tty because she's an established well-experienced A-list actress who doesn't need to prove herself anymore. Still, if we are to judge Cate Vs Michelle performance in this particular case, I believe that Michelle Yeoh did have an edge over Cate because Michelle Yeoh's performance delivers a non-conventional variety of emotions and full of soul, not caring about what typical oscar-baiting stereotypical performance looks like.
That more had to do with the type of movie. But as a performance Cate transformed into her character whether you think it’s oscar bait or not it was easy to believe that she was a real person with nuance and subtleties
@@Brandon-rb4sm Her supposed "transformation" into her character is still something you would see in most oscar-baiting movies with characters played by white actresses. We're conditioned to see it as a great award-worthy performance for decades. For me personally, it's kinda boring to see slight deviations yet similar acting performance/style in oscar-winning acting performances. The reason why it's super boring is because of the lack of variety of genre, soul and styles being awarded. Plus, oscars heavily favouring dramatic acting ain't helping. That's where and why Michelle's performance feels so fresh in a multi-genre soulful movie with actual substance like EEAAO. People may find it hard to see how and why her performance is great cos' it's not what we're typically conditioned to believe as a fantastic performance. That's why some still think Cate's performance is slightly better although it could not be further from the truth, at least in my opinion. And, Michelle WON! As she should...
Kinda crazy that the films in the Best Animated category have no other nomimations since I wish Marcel, Pinocchio and Puss in Boots 2 would get more recognition 😔💔
hope they do the right thing with animated short and give it to ice merchants or an ostrich. last year proved that they actually watch the shorts and it would be a shame if they didn't continue that trend
You're definitely more informed on the Oscars than me, but I don't think Austin Butler will win Best Actor. He hasn't won as many awards for his performance as Brendan Fraser, and I don't think he carries Elvis quite in the way that Fraser carries The Whale. Also, Elvis is Butler's first time in a major leading role. I know that doesn't always matter to Academy voters, but I think it lowers his chances of winning. My prediction is Brendan Fraser, but it will be interesting to see what happens. :)
My predictions: Best Picture - Everything Everywhere All At Once Best Director - Daniels for Everything Everywhere All At Once Best Actress - Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) Best Actor - Austin Butler (Elvis) Best Supporting Actress - Kerry Kondon (The Bandhees of Inisherin) Best Supporting Actor - Key Huy Kuan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) Original Screenplay - The Banshees of Inisherin Adapted Screenplay - Women Talking International Feature Film - All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany) Cinematography - All Quiet on the Western Front Production Design - Babylon Make-up & Hairstyle - The Whale Costume Design - Elvis Film Editing - Everything Everywhere All At Once Original Score - Babylon Original Song - “Naatu Naatu” (RRR) Sound - Top Gun: Maverick Visual Effects - Avatar: the way of Water Animated Feature Film - Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio Documentary Feature - Navalny Documentary Short - The Elephant Whisperers Animated Short - Ice Merchants Live-Action Short - An Irish Goodbye
it is tragic that people confuse an Oscar for Life Achievement (Yeoh) with An Oscar for the Best Performance for a Speficic Year... So the Very Best Performance, and that is Cate Blanchett's is judged through biases lenses from people who care for race only in Hollywood context when actually Blanchett, and Yeoh (lots of cudos to both) are involved in immigrant and refugge solidarity movement... One more snubb for Blanchett!
It's not confusion. It is just how life works. Everyone, and I mean everyone votes with biases. That just how human works. Don't naïve and think that voters only vote for best performances. You do realize a lot of times, these voters haven't even seen all the movies right? You know this right? So just by that fact, it's impossible to vote simply based on performance.
I know it won't win best picture but, I love Triangle of Sadness, my 2nd favorite from last year. But yeah those are the comfort and easy'to-go picks for this year. A pretty good one tho.
I disagree on Michelle and Cate, Karsten. I think Michelle gives the best performance. Her performance is what grounds this insane movie and at the same time she is also juggling multiple different genres while remaining understated. Too often we conflate best acting with most acting imo. I think she will win and she deserves to win.
Here are my Oscars predictions: Best Actress: Michelle Yeoh- Everything Everywhere All At Once Best Actor: Austin Butler- Elvis Best Supporting Actor: Ken Huy Quan- Everything Everywhere All At Once Best Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Best Original Screenplay: Everything Everywhere All At Once Best Adapted Screenplays: Top Gun: Maverick Best Original Score: Justin Hurwitz- Babylon Best Original Song: Lady Gaga- Hold My Hand (From “Top Gun: Maverick”) Best Visual Effects: Avatar: The Way of Water Best Hairstyles & Makeup: The Batman Best Production Design: Avatar: The Way of Water or Babylon Best Sound: Top Gun: Maverick Best Cinematography: Elvis Best Costume Design: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Best Animated Feature Film: Puss In Boots: The Last Wish or Turning Red Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Noooo Frasher deserves this win, it would complete his comeback. The academy might ruin it like they did for Mickey Rourke, who was also directed by Aronofsky
And it would be yet another damn deference to a biopic role. No shade to Butler but every biopic win just gives the worst kind of movie more room to game the system
@@cwalter-iz5hl Yep. Which, in fairness, ‘The Whale’ gives off the vibe too (radical transformation, actor making a comeback). But man would I love to see Brendan’s speech
Its crazy to think that banshees and tár could go home empty handed. Their only shot are kerry and cate. In my opinion kerry should win because her supporting performance was the best (i pray for it to happen). Cate obviously should win but i think michelle will win and i am not mad about it.
Sequels can be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay since their scripts use preexisting material/characters. For example the first Toy Story was nominated for Best Original Screenplay while Toy Story 3 got nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. I doubt the Academy would make a Best Sequel Screenplay category.
Not too many thoughts but I will be incredibly annoyed if Babylon doesn't win Original Score. Also, hot take, but I'd much rather Barry Keoghan win Supporting Actor over Ke Huy Quan
My predictions: Best picture: Everything Everywhere all at Once Best actor: Colin Farrell Best actress: Cate Blanchett Best Original Screenplay: banshees Best supporting actress: jamie lee curtis Best supporting actor: ke huy quan
I think Elvis is gonna win cinematography as it won at the ASC’s. It would also be the first win for a female DP. I think the Batman would have won if it where nominated and/released earlier
Tar is overrated. So is Cate’s performance. We’ve seen this “hard” edge lesbian predator role many times before except I guess not in a movie that makes her the hero and not the villain.
I think Michelle deserves the win but I’d love to see Cate win for Tár. For Best Actor, I think Austin will win for Elvis but I want to see Brendan win.
I absolutely agree with you on Cate Blanchett, her performance in Tar is MILES AWAY from any other actor in that category, BUT I want Michelle Yeoh to win because as you said it Cate has already 2 Oscars, we all know she's one of the best if not the best actor living, does she need any more recognition? I don't think so. The only category I don't agree with is adapted screenplay. I think Glass Onion has a real shot winning that category. I can even say it's between All Quiet and GO.
I don’t get the hype about EEAAO. I’m a huge movie guy and I was left with a meh. I never felt anything for the characters and it the film style was totally ripped off of Scott Pilgrim vs the world introducing this weird characters that just didn’t resonate with me.
i'm rooting for ice merchants too. i think it has a chance. i also really did not like the boy the mole the fox and the horse- so saccharine and stupid.
There were a lot of great movies this year, so I'd be so disappointed if everything everywhere cleans up. That would be such a boring result. Especially since it seems like it's only predicted to do so because it's the trendy movie this year, and not based on its own merit.
Banshees for Screenplay!!! EEAAO is also a Screenplay Movie? Have to agree only half of it, cause the direction is way better! I even don't believe that the Daniels will win all 3 Oscars, Director and Picture is enough and McDonagh deserves the Screenplay Oscar! Also, it's not rare, but... The Daniels could be one of the very few filmmakers to win the Picture/Director/Screenplay package BUT... Look how many times it happened and the time span between it: Bong Joon-ho was the last (2020) Alejandro G. Iñarritu (2015) The Coen Brothers (2008) Peter Jackson (2004) James L. Brooks (1984) Francis Ford Coppola (1975) Billy Wilder (1961) I don't think after 3 years the Academy will do it again, they could have done it with Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion the last 2 years, but they gave 1 or 2 awards to other contenders: Zhao lost the Screenplay award to The Father, Campion lost Picture and Screenplay to Coda. Finally, EEAAO could go home with a nice package of 5 awards: - Picture - Director - Actress - Supporting Actor - Editing It would be sad if Banshees goes home empty handed, so I predict they give Banshees Supporting Actress and Screenplay and everyone can go home happily!
@@robbyten100 I'm not saying TG deserves, but c'mon, this long w/o TC winning an Oscar? It's called Show Business, it's a popularity contest. I don't want Top Gun to win, I'm just saying, don't be surprised
@@christopherperez6761 If Top Gun wins Best Picture then everyone should be surprised. Top Gun didn't win any major awards prior to Oscars. It would be unprecedented for it to win Best Picture without winning any other major awards. It didn't even win the producers guild which Tom Cruise got an achievement award in.
