This was my first ever 400km ride, the Moors and Wolds audax from Alfreton, Derbyshire.
We started at 10.30am on the Saturday and had to be back by 1.30pm the following day. So this involves riding through the night.

Not sure what I find more impressive, the completion of the 400km or the perfection of your teeth.

Katie Kookaburra just an obvious observation haha. Congrats for completing this challenge, so impressive. Ive gone through a couple of your cycling vids and love them. You have my subscription ha. Best wishes from London

@@kidsofjokes I noticed that too, perfect teeth! Also a few of those riders out on the 400km seem to be about my build haha, and the longest ride I've done so far is 40km. So, I really need to step up my game!

Great stuff! I love seeing the old boys out on their steel frame bikes and bits of paper mapping the route-proper old school. It's such a pure form of cycling, no drugs or super pricey kit-just cycling for the love of it. I love that Katie met Steve! Small world. Well done.
@KatieKookaburra
@KatieKookaburra 6 лет назад
YES!!!! Gordon that is why I love it! There is no snobbery, no speeding past to get faster times, it is the purest form of cycling and in particular group cycling. I love it!! And yeah Steve was an absolute gem. He is really funny too, and very humble about what he's done! 🙂

The wind is howling outside; it's pretty cold here - gotta expect that, seeing as it's only 9 days till winter! - but this latest video of yours, Katie, has warmed the cockles of my heart! Must be great to be able to cover such a distance - and with mates for company! Fantastic!! I can't say that it has inspired me to aim that high but it has helped me with my current aim, which is to be able to ride 100 kms by the end of the year. In the meantime, I've put myself forward to do a sponsored ride on the day of our Parish Fete, last Saturday in July.
@KatieKookaburra
@KatieKookaburra 6 лет назад
Charlie, thank you so much! I'm sure you will be able to ride the 100km. How far are you riding at the min? Just increase gradually and if you can have a few other friends ride with you. I think that helps so much.
@brianward7724

Thanks, Katie! I managed 50kms the other day. As far as friends to ride with me, I'm the only one of my vintage within cooee of the little town of Grenfell, so I usually ride on my pat malone.

Hello, cheers from Brazil! You are really strong. I had tears on my face when finished 360 km in 3 days in my MTB. There was too much climbing and too much sun on my head. I was not prepared. The mix of suffering and joy in your video remind me those moments. Thanks a lot!

Great stuff, congratulations on an epic ride! Just discovered your channel a couple of days ago (watched your film of the FRED ) reminds me of doing Audax rides back in the UK (living in Norway now) when I was younger with a local cycling club (Seacroft Wheelers and the local CTC) we did a 240 miles in 24, around the Dales/Lakes/North Pennines, which turned into about 300 miles due to riding 28 mies to the start then getting lost in the night, having missed food stops from our support van due to my mate getting punctures and going off the edge of the map, laying in the middle of the road on the top of a big climb watching the sun come up, epic sunburn, exhaustion, feeling sick, the whole thing. What an experience though! haha! so yes, very well done you! :)

This is a dream! Congrats on you’re accomplishment. (Even though it was three years ago, just found you in my RU-vid feed.) Hopefully one day I can do this. I started at doing daily 5mile, then 12- 15mile rides, now I’m at 30miles. Yesterday I did 35 miles for the first time. Can’t wait to keep going.

That's so epic Katie congrats!! :) Can totally relate to feeling sick on long rides. Both myself and Maddie were so sick towards the end of our everesting that we were literally delirious and couldn't keep any food in at all. It ruined mango torq bars for me forever and took me a few months before I could stomach clif bars again lol!

It's a weird one isn't it, someone said it could be down to dehydration.... I wonder if that's why we all felt sick. It's hard because you know you have to eat but I felt so sickly. Ahhh well we go through it! 🙂 Thanks Nicole x

Very nice vlog Katie, it reminds me of wen I did a 200km ride London To Dunwhitch east coast , had finished my night shift , and we drove down from Liverpool , must of been the excitement I stayed a wake on trip down , my riding mate visited his sister , I had a lie down for a hour or two before we set off at Herb Hill track racing in London, starting at midnight my mate shot off with the fast lads leaving me on my own , no map hadn’t a clue were I was , I saw him till the end of the ride , but I got in with a group of six riders who took me around the course , come about 8am most of fell asleep on the bike still up right drifting across the road , luckily no traffic coming the other way , tho did sleep on the Buss back to London and on our way back home to Liverpool not sure wen I actually did this ride probably 1998?? , always wanted to get back doing theses rides again , maybe in the next year or two wen my health is a lot better , thanks again Katie 🎶👍🌟💪🚴🏿🍰

Fantastic!!😁 Yes, those long rides hurt--especially on the wrists, the lower back, and worst of all, between the legs. It helps to just get in the zone and stay there so you don't notice it so much. Then it only really hurts when you get *off* the bike! A suggestion to avoid sickness: try to stick mostly to complex carbs as feed. I bring along a whole batch of homemade granola (about 1.5kg). It has high energy density, low fat, and doesn't spike your sugar levels too much because it has no refined carbs. This will keep you going without making your digestion work too hard. So, next up: styrkeproven.no. Don't worry, it's only 550km of vertiginous Norwegian mountains. A light day on the bike for you, I'd say.
@KatieKookaburra
@KatieKookaburra 6 лет назад
Erik, I think you're on to something with the granola. I will defo take porridge or something like that with me. I need actual for rather than all the coke, crisps and sugar. How do you make it?
@erik_midtskogen
@erik_midtskogen 6 лет назад
Katie Kookaburra It's a little bit of bother to make it, but the results are well worth the effort. I actually make it into bars because that's easier to eat on the bike. I'll post a recipe for it on my Google+ page tonight or tomorrow and then post a link to it from here.

Legendary, barely finished the 400km and you still have the energy to make the video :) did you guys take a few days off work after? It seems audaxes are a lot more popular than here, we were only 15 :P All that junk food is the only time i actually enjoy it, while riding epic rides :D My advice for epix rides like this one is dont stop for long or eat too much, you end up cold and sick.

Congratulation on a successful completion of 400K Katie! Does all UK Brevet start that late in the morning? I rode my 300K last Saturday which started at 4am. A tip, try not to eat much greasy or fatty food(burgers) which can make you feel ill at the stop. If you can, get some carbs(orange, banana, apple, Clif Bars) or peanut butter crackers. If you must eat greasy/fatty food, eat a smaller portion and make sure you drink a lot of electrolyte.

Only just come across your channel and I say good on ya and well done a bloody solid effort that was. I dunno how anyone could eat McDonalds while out riding though😄. A very entertaining look at a big ride, and what a good bunch of people to ride with. Cheers from Australia

What a completely epic ride! And here I was expecting them to get a motel overnight, but no, they soldiered on. Well done! I think Katie might be my athletic crush.

@@KatieKookaburra You're a hell of a strong cyclist. You tackle hills that make me turn and ride the other way. I'll get there, tho. Just gotta ride more.

Wow, fantastic. Great achievement, is that your longest ride to date? Great sense of camaraderie between you all that came across in the film. Still to enter my first audax, my next sportive though, is the RVR100 on the 10th June, so looking forward to that. :-)

Awesome. You should sign up for the very popular annual recreational sportive Vätternrundan in Sweden! Roughly 20 000 riders participate each year in the main course (300k) around Sweden's second biggest lake, and it's a fantastic experience!
