I am all about keeping it real here on my channel, so this video is literally my first attempt at free hand custom quilting. I put off attempting the quilting on this quilt for weeks, but finally decided to just "do it scared" as they say. I traced a path multiple times with my finger to go as far as I could continuously with my first thread color. The first thing I learned was that continuous curves are harder than they look and they are even more difficult in larger areas. They look terrible in some of the areas and only marginally better in the others. The smaller areas are definitely the best.
I also quilted swirls in spots with the first thread color, and came in to those areas from the continues line areas. I am very comfortable with swirls so those went well for the most part, but it was a challenge to keep them within their designated areas. The video does end abruptly because my thread broke. It was a brand new spool and I think I was going to fast in some areas which caused the thread to get tangled where it shouldn't have thus causing it to break. A quick fix of the threading in one area and I was back in business.
Now that I've gotten over the initial terror of just going for it, I will definitely be trying more custom quilting on smaller quilts to continue to build up my confidence and skills. I'm actually thinking of piecing a couple of simple practice pieces, one with strips and one with squares and then using the square piece solely for practicing continuous lines and then the strip piece for trying different custom designs in each strip.
