Thanks for that. The context of this model is that it’s certainly a budget model for the Australian market. Most steam locomotives in Australia by our local manufacturers cost $AU500 or more (260GBP or more).

Back in 1988, the Flying Scotsman made a visit to us in Australia to help celebrate our Bicentennial. She travelled pretty much anywhere there was a standard guage line. This included all of N.S.W. There are many wonderful photographs and videos of her steaming alongside and double heading with 3801, a streamlined and beautifully preserved C38 loco, and arguably the most famous steam locomotive in Australia.

Actually the fixed tender bogies is very common. All the German manufacturers have that style (especially good for tender drives) in all scales. So not really strange or unusual at all. They're nothing to do with old Lima Australian models, just Hornby International marketing, they could've just as easily been sold as a rivarossi. Good review

4472 double heading with class leader 3801 at the start of a massive 4400 km tour from Sydney to Perth in 1989 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tpXrZ9HfnyI.html In some views it is clear how 3801 towers over 4472. Some modellers in Australia bought the very expensive HO model of 4472 made for Australian firm PSM by Samhongsa of Korea to get the proportions right for modelling the memorable Australian tour of 4472. Limited numbers made and when one turns up for sale usually sell for over $2000.

Indeed Lima did make one of these locomotives a good many years ago. Lima then became part of Hornby International, who will presumably still have the tools. So it could be an upgraded Lima model.
@Gaz3801
@Gaz3801 3 года назад
No, it's not an upgraded model. Complete new tooling. The Lima model has some discrepancies and so does this model, although not what Lima had. Besides the Lima model had proper bogies on the tender, but the tender on the Lima C38 was borrowed from a French locomotive to save costs.
@matbeech7518

I'd beg to differ I think the lima would be an upgrade to this ARM version. Has been the worst $300 I've spent at least my lima one ran flawlessly this new thing has had a motor replacement, bogies replaced on the tender and when I recieved it I had to put all the detail parts back on the model. I won't be buying anymore if this is the quality I get and ARM haven't answered my emails or phone calls regarding the issues

Thanks for this review. Seems to be much appreciated by views. 3801 streamlined version planned for release in the next six months or so I understand. Lots of previous models of the C38. Oldest were the 1963 Model Dockyard Brass version made for them by Kumata of Japan. Cost about the same as three Triang Brittanias at the time but really kickstarted Australian modelling at the time. Several improved re runs over time. The Lima seventies plastic versions sold to a larger market from the seventies onwards. Later in streamlined 3801 version. Then in the eighties Mansfield Hobbies had a much improved brass model made by Samhongsa of Korea. A much higher standard model being brass hand made. In the nineties a DJH kit was produced with Footplate Lloyds models. Also in the nineties PSM had an improved Samhongsa model made with numerous painted variations of both types. The Eureka version followed just a few years ago. So quite a list of versions made over time. Usually made in both streamlined and normal versions. And these were just the HO versions, not counting the N scale, O scale with gauge 1 versions made in electric and live steam. Even with all these versions this latest ARM model is pretty much sold out in Australia.

The red oval plates on the cab and tender sides are the coat of arms of the state of New South Wales. For many yeasrs, these were applied to all locomotives, steam, Diesel and electric, while the NSW system was operated as a government entity.

actually the "tires" are relistic, the NSWGR had Burished tires (as seen on the restored and running 3801)
@schlagetor
@schlagetor 3 года назад
The tires when in regular service rarelly stayed in the burnished state for long. The preserved loco's especially the operational ones were pretty much cleaned after each trip, unlike in regular service where in many cases when returned to their home depot did not have time to be cleaned. When I had first started as a trainee engineman in January 1964, the cleaning of wheels was done using a hand scrapper, kerosene & cottom waste. At depots such as Eveliegh where the 38's were primarilly allocated to, with some at other depots, the cleaning was generally carried out using black oil, even on green 38's that method was still used. Eveleigh as a passenger loco depot had the most cleaners of any depot in NSW, country depots may have only one or two that also included general cleaning around the depot rather than the locomotive, besides that in most rural areas, the water was hard and did not take long to be covered in stains from leaks and steam leaks.

Good video Matt it is nice to see some Australian motive power on your layout. As for the jumpy start it is due to the lack of pick ups there are only pick ups on the main driving wheels so try adding pic ups to the rest of the wheels on the locomotive and also the tender as well.- Hope that helps.- Nicholas.

Great review Matt! I do agree that overall, it's not too bad however it's not that accurate and they seem to have cut a few corners with some details and designs. It's nice to see a cheaper model though because as an Aussie myself, I would love to have an Australian layout but most locos are sometimes upwards of the equivalent £300+ which is just ridiculous. I have considered getting this loco though as a small Aussie feature on my British layout however I just feel that I should wait until ARM have released their latest C38's coming later this year (one of them is streamlined) as I'm hopeful that they've made some adjustments and improvements. All the best!

While this video is almost a year old, it's ARM, not AMR. And yes it's more of a budget loco, that may have some errors, but it still looks good. The fixed bogies don't really impede the appearance of it.

It is sold as lima in Europe and from the same stable as Hornby that's why the tender bogies don't swivel, basically a budget model to be polite. Can't believe the headlight doesnt operate in this day and age. They're still making 200%

NSWGR policy on headlights was that during the day their operation was banned, and considering we all runs trains during the day the lack of a headlight is a non issue.

I vaguely recall reading in an Australian Journal that there was correspondence between Riddles and Harold Young about the performance of these 1943 built locomotives. The performances achieved by these simple 38 class locomotives without the complication of three or four cylinder propulsion may have influenced Riddles in the design of the later Brittania class. Ending up with similar leading dimensions heating surfaces, boiler pressures, axle loads, cylinder dimensions etc. Something new for a UK Pacific to go with two cylinders but still have the advantage of a less constrained grate area. The grate being the real source of power. Riddles of course looking for the most cost effective solution. I think in an ARHS bulletin article on the C38 class.

In operation NSWGR never required a light during daylight hours... so unless your model railway is set in the dark then why would you need working light. It misses some beats, but in the grand scheme of things its a very very welcome addition to Australian modelling and is definately the lone budget offering in a sea of superdetailed very delicate very young modeller unfriendly models on offer for a whole weeks wage for lots of people($500/800 is not uncommon). Don't like it, don't buy it. No one is holding a gun to your head making you. It is serving a very important purpose being a model of a loco you can go see run, that is user friendly to younger modellers because its quite hard to smash lots of little bits off and isn't to expensive. Exactly what lots of people ask for, but then it seems the same people complain that it isn't perfect and fully detailed. The old case of never being able to please everyone and no point trying.

If the tender bogies are fixed, how does it cope with the curves. I can only guess it’s for the same reason Hornby use with the fixed pony truck thing, so there isn’t a visible gap. In that example I think the wheels hanging of the rails on curves looks worse.

@@Gaz3801 Sounds like the Mansfield one. Some valued advice I acted on was to wrap the loco in thin fruit shop bags do that in the common event of the packing foam breaking down the foam will not stick to the loco finish. Sometimes happens after many years. Was also advised to store vertically so any undetected excess lubricating oil does not spread to the finish. Funny how the ",gold," finish impresses any female I show my brass locos to, unlike others.

49w I worked as a fireman on many 38cl, had my favourites with them but I personally preferred the 36cl loco's 4-6-0's 73 of them rebuilt with Belpair boilers and in more than one area hauled the same loads, both passenger & goods trains as the 38's. As for the model, after seeing it, not in photo's but having a good look at one, I am wanting a non streamlined 38cl as it fills a modelling gap for me, however when I saw one close up along with many video clips of them along with photo's I have refused to buy one, they are actually quite cheap for an Australian model, the problem is that the model seems to be a semi cheap reproduction of the model that cuts corners and has terrible oversized detail items on it. I honestly cannot understand why the model was not produced with the terrible oversized and incorrect detail items on the model. the rivet detail is terrible and oversized, the cover plates that provide access to the components between the boiler and the cladding is another oversized and cause items. I have asked the question as to how harder would it have been to have made the model with the correct detail along with a number of other items, and make them to the same standard of the Hornby locomotives which have very neat and realistic detail on the models produced. The models however have sold well in Oz owing to the price, some modellers have spent time removing some of the wrong detail and replace with correct parts, which raises the price quite a bit. For me its a missed oportunity that could have been a huge and constant supply model had more care been taken in getting it right. Which should have been done in the first place.

I reckon this is a piece of expensive junk. So many details are either molded on or missing altogether. There are small manufacturers in Australia that make etched detail parts for this loco and another company makes a resin kit for the tender so this model will have bogies that swivel. But what's the point for if ARM couldn't be bothered to do a proper job then why should the buyers. You don't buy a brand new car with no headlights so why buy this model with no whistle.
