No. When you enter US from land border, you do not get 6 months entry. So if your entry in US is valid for 6 months (say 20 October), and if you enter US from Canada say on 20 September, you will not get new I-94 and your entry will be only valid till 20 October. That's why officer said "It's easy then". If you were staying in US for 6 months, then you had to go down and get new I-94 on land border. Only if you enter US via air, you get new I-94 every time.
