I remember arriving at San Quentin as a 20 year old. It was absolutely the most terrifying experience of my life. Back then, 1992, they still had the weights. And pulling up past that yard looked exactly like all the prison movies I had seen. On my second or third day, coming back from dinner, as we were heading back up the stairs, (I was on the 4th tier, cell number 4 C25 to be exact,) I noticed below me a guy getting punched and stomped out by what looked like about 6 dudes. It was one of the worst beatings I had ever seen. I just stood there froze watching. My celly, who had been there before, and was kind of watching out for me, said "Keep it moving! Don't stand here and watch shit!!" Anyway, long story short, it turns out that the guy died the next day. Needless to say, since 1992, I never went back. Scared straight..

This man would be excellent for youth programs in high schools, community agencies and private organizations. He is articulate and clear in his story telling. He is a great presenter. Should be doing a lot of public speaking. I'd suggest no cursing though. The story is compelling enough.

I've never been to prison but spent lots of time in jail from 17 to 21. The last time I was in jail was in 1992 in which I was locked up in Kansas City county for two months. And was waiting to be transported to my town for a hearing. Well they refused to come get me and they let me out one night at 9 PM and said to get off their property or be arrested again. They told me I had two days to get to my home town in southern Missouri for court. I had no car, no money, nothing. I ended up the next morning begging for work in which I got enough for a bus ticket. I went to court with no lawyer. I went up to a lawyer in court and told him the whole deal. We;ll when my name was called that lawyer stood up and helped me. Why? I don't know because he didn't know me and didn't have to, but the Judge told me this was the last time I will stand in front of him because if he sees me again I would do 3 years in prison. And that was the last time I ever got in trouble.

As an addict that has thankfully never been arrested, this scared the shit out of me. To think I was so close to getting there. I am sorry that you had to experience these things but thankful that people like you can share these stories.

Thank you for the videos. I'm 30. Locked up for a time in a psych ward in my teens because my aunt lied about me. If you ever end up locked up anywhere, you can recover so long as you don't lose hope. They took my clothes, drugged me, and locked me in a room with no windows. At first I was happy I was alone but I awoke after the drugging to find a much taller, stronger guy had been thrown in while I was knocked out. I'm very thankful that this guy wasn't a jerk. There were no bars or windows, just a solid door and no one would hear you scream or see you if you were attacked. That was a horrible time for me. I was barely still a minor so it didn t affect my adult life. There was 1 thing, the drugs messed me up. What they used was stronger than morphine, caused memory problems, and altered my health from then on. Of course that was illegal and they got what they had coming. Still, that place was shut down after abuse was discovered. One thing there that kept me from losing it was my mother, and the isolation room. In that room there are 10 straps, you are completely unable to move, drugged, and they even put a window there that allows everyone in the common area to see you. Fortunately though I was no longer able to go to school, my boss kept my job open and accepted, even believed me when I told him the truth. The truth? My dad had been dying, and my aunt moved in next door with her 30 year old kid and his kids. After dad died from cancer after a long 9 months, she told people my mom and I beat my dad often, that I was violent, even spread it to my uncles. When he was cremated, she took his ashes and his other things. My uncle's believed me, and took them back, then handed them to me at the beach. I guess that ticked her off. I wanted to ask her, honestly, why she did these things. I just knocked on her door, and said nothing aggressive, didn't force my way in or make threats... Age just called the police and played it out like some actor, like she was abused. I pity her, and I forgive her, but I doubt I'll ever see her again.

So, I wasn't gonna post this but the more I thought about it the more reasons I had to post this. It's about my time in an INFAMOUS WEST TENNESSEE JAIL, called MAD COUNTY. It was called MAD COUNTY for 2 reasons. One reason is because it is located in MADISON COUNTY TENNESSEE. The 2nd reason is because it's the most brutal, unforgiving and one of the worst places on earth. I'm not going to go into much detail but give you a damn good idea of the living nightmare this place is. I say is because I assume it hasn't changed since I had my stay. I will start with the county blues. First you get a shitty pair of sandals followed by the trustee letting you try on different jump suits, county blues, until you have found one that fits or doesn't fit. Once in you can request blues that fit. You may get a pair that fits in 2 weeks to a month because not one of the deputies are in any hurry to help you no matter what the situation is. The living conditions were definitely different than my other 2 stays in the old jail, the jail before MAD COUNTY was built. There were three pods that contained 3 "cells." A pod, B pod and C pod. Each "cell" held 12 to 15 inmates so no one had any privacy at all!! There is a bathroom with no door and a shower with no door or curtain. So, if you had to shit or shower all of your cell mates could see you. Luckily all of the guys I was in with were cool except for one homo that I had to handle for watching me shower. Got 3 days in solitary but it was worth it because he was gone when I got back. This place had no TV, no radio or anything. Once a week a trustee brings a cart of books so you can pick some shitty book to read. There's absolutely no rec time or outside time. The only exercise you get is sit ups, push ups etc. If you got tired of sitting on your bunk you walk around the "cell" in circles. The cell is roughly 30' by 30' so it wasn't much of a walk. You can play card games but that, obviously, gets old. Your sleeping habits get ruined completely. This is due to never knowing what time it is except for when they bring you meals. If everyone in your cell lays down to rest at lights out, you won't be able to sleep for several different reasons. They might throw in a new guy sometime while you're sleeping and the new guy will most likely be fucked up on something and bother everybody talking and making noises. Other disruptions come from the other 2 cells in your pod or the guys in A pod and B pod will start making all sorts of noise. I remember one night the guys in B pod started freestylin over a beat someone was playing on one of the 2 table and chairs in the "cell" and that shit was loud!!! That beat that guy was playing was echoing throughout the building, I assume. They must have been directly under us because it was loud as shit!! And this went on for hours. The only thing that I found entertaining was watching the guys in my cell fish with the guys in other "cells" in C pod. Just watching them fish in general was fun to watch but that was it. I'm making this place sound better than it is but I assure you, IT IS HELL!!! Everybody that was spending 11/29 or more were begging to be took to prison. They were begging every deputy that passed by to get them out and on to prison, they were writing notes to the sheriff and other officials begging to get out of MAD COUNTY and on to prison. I witnessed 4 attempted suicides while there. I'm not sure what all of their reasons for doing that was but I do know that a couple of them were due to being in MAD COUNTY. Luckily they failed trying to kill themselves and they did get transported somewhere else that delt with mental issues. Im gonna try to think of a few more things to mention.They keep it colder than shittin there, you can trade certain items from each meal and you do get commissary. I know that this is not about prison and that's why I hesitated posting this. But, I decided to post this because MAD COUNTY was and is one of the WORST places on earth! I don't think it's possible to stress just how terrible this place is with words. Also, the reason I was writing cell like "cell" is because I can't remember what they called your "cell?" Anyway I apologize for any misspelled words or grammarical errors I made in this, I was writing this on my phone.

I remember my first day. When I got off the bus they had an old convict come over help me grab my stuff and show me to my housing unit each person had him older convict come and do this. On the way to my housing unit I asked the old man, so is it real racial here? I didn't know what the phrase politics meant at that time. Of course it is he said. I didn't ask him, is it very violent here there's a lot of bad stuff happen? Oh it's not that bad he said maybe 3 or 4 times a week somebody gets stabbed usually they end up living through it though. I remember thinking oh my God what did I get myself into? A couple months later I was sitting on the rec field that old man walked up, he asked how I was doing with a big smile on his face, then he started laughing and joking with the other guys about how he scared the hell out of me when I came in by telling me that 3 or 4 times a week somebody got stabbed. It did happen it wasn't anything like the movies, and as the years went by I work myself down to lower yards, other than a few prison riots racial mostly over drugs I only had one fight the whole time I was in prison, and that was because he was a Youngster just turned 18 shipped over from the minors unit, he got upset because I wouldn't loan him a magazine that was loaned to me and said oh man you're just acting like a punk, he didn't even know that he wasn't supposed to use that word I don't think. Right after he said it we got locked down but in the morning after chili had to go in his cell and handle it, he was a young black dude pure muscle raised in the street, he whooped my ass, afterwards we cleaned up the blood in his cell I bled on the top of my sink told the guard that I slipped on my toilet while I was standing on top of it and they took me off to get my lip stitched up where my tooth has been put through it, and give me some crutches so I could walk because I had backed into his drawer it was sticking out from under his bunk I remember when I came back on the cell block I was scared to death that all the other white guys were going to be down on me because I've got my ass kicked. It was just the opposite, everyone said hey man you did what you had to do good job you stuck up for yourself you showed heart, I got my ass kicked I said, they said that don't matter what matters is that you showed heart. the next day I was standing there on my crutches over by where you check out your wheelbarrow or rake or whatever to work and here come old T-Mac that youngster, oh my God I'm thinking how am I going to fight this guy again on crutches? the youngster walked up to me I was pretty young myself but he was just turned 18, stuck out his hand and apologize to me for using the p word, he said he was sorry and that it would never happen again, and that his people came down on him for it. I remember a big sense of relief. it wasn't long after that that I learned did everybody that was in there even though I was on a very high yard which is people that were in society before like me, and even the ones that were in there for very heinous violent crimes we're basically just like other people and Society if he didn't know what they were charged for you wouldn't even be able to tell. It's also when I decided but all the guys with the dark glasses in the tattoos and their chest blown out, we're just meet with bones in the middle just like me and that usually all that s*** was just an act. I stopped trying to be a tough guy and started being myself making people laugh joking around them. of course if I needed to I would stand up for myself no matter what wouldn't back down from anybody but that was my last resort, I learned that if I be myself and make people laugh, it took the heat out of the situation, and because of that other than racial stuff that I had to get involved with, I mean you can't just run to your cell and say I don't want to get involved if it's a race thing, I don't think I ever had another one on one fight the whole time I was in there, and I started off on a high yard because of the nature of my crime which was considered violent even though nobody got hurt. you know people are people and usually if you give people respect, but let them know that you are going to allow them to just outright disrespect you, and if your friendly without being stupid, basically if you just be yourself, mind your own business, don't repeat anything you heard or getting debt and don't mess with them guys at the picnic table with a towel over the other guy's lap, and the most important thing don't mess with the dope sack, I think most people could make it, it worked for me. of course there's also other situations where I've seen the guy go in with two years back in 1969 it's still in there, sometimes things happen and you just have to handle it. it could be completely peaceful one minute and the next minute all hell breaks loose, it's changed my life, I would give anything to go back in time and be able to not do the things I did that led up to me going to prison, has caused me and still causes me a lot of pain, I just thank God that I made it through it, then I'm smart enough not to live that life anymore, and I hope that I continue to have something to care enough about, to not decide to go back. I figured that's the only way I'll end up going back is if I give up and go back on purpose, and there's been a lot of times when I contemplated that, sounds bad but it's true. that's why I just got another dog, because my other dog is getting old, and I know that it won't be long before she passes away, but if I have another dog this younger dog he's 10 months old I won't be able to mess up because then I'll be letting him down and I won't know for sure that somebody's going to care for him. It might sound weird, but that's how I've stayed out of prison since 2002 little things like that, and avoiding people and crowd. loyalty is everything to me, and even though some people might say it's just a dog, these two dogs are the only loyal people I've met in 50 years, and I'm not going to let nothing happen to them cuz I gave them my word. Give them a good life. Unfortunately these two dogs are the only family and friends I have, I destroyed just about every relationship I've ever had in my life, mostly because I couldn't trust people, and even though I try not to have a prison mentality, some things just never go away, things bother me or matter to me that don't most people. I thank God for what you guys are doing, I hope you can keep some youngster from destroying his life. Prison is not cool some things don't go away. you guys keep up the good work, keep showing love man, and do everything you can to stay free.

I looked up LA Public Arrest records and saw that my dad was released a few months ago. I haven't had contact with him since 2012. I found my aunt's phone number and she says he lives near her. This weekend we're driving there and I'm going to go up to him acting like I'm a stranger and watch as he realises that he's in fact talking to his son. I'm so excited. I guess I say this because you kind of remind me of him, (as a compliment), you're both cool and just grind through to make things happen. So, thank you, Joe, because you inspired me to go through arrest records. 😂😂😂

My husband got picked up on drug charges and his stupid ass, I love him haha but he don't know how to leave well enough alone and he ended up in the hole, often it broke my little ol heart haha. He's sober now, we both are thank God

Being on that bus as it pulled into the gate and seeing two fences topped with razor wire and the rolls of razor wire filling the space between the fences, I found out what it feels like to be on the wrong side of all that. Not to mention the guard towers at the corners which of course are manned by guards armed with high powered rifles who will not hesitate to shoot any prisoner fool enough to be outside the fences. The feeling cannot be explained to someone who has not experienced it. Freedom is precious!!!

I just got out of Finnish prison, i am on that tracking band. Finnish prisons are a luxury hotel compared to your hellhouses, we have good food, free tv, no rape and rarely murders. But the experience is nearly the same, worst of all, blindspots were cells and anyone could come in to your cell when they are unlocked.
