My first French River trip! The old voyageur Channel.

In June 2022 I went to the French River for the first time. After crossing it countless times while driving up to other canoe trips, I finally decided to go check it out and it did not disappoint! Though there is a large amount off cottages in some places along the way, the landscape is stunning and there is many intimate little waterways between all the little islands scattered across the river and the Georgian Bay, where you might not see anyone all day!

Hey man, the campsite that you stayed on at 14:20 my brother and I stayed at the exact same one 2 years ago. If you went left instead of straight to the old voyageur channel you hit bad river down the crooked rapids. Unreal area, insane fishing and stunning beauty. Love the lower french.

West and Peachey were the manufacturers of the “Alligator” steam warping tugs that you encountered. They were manufactured in Simcoe, Ontario. A restored “Aliigator” is actually in operational condition there. Read the book “Alligators of the North”. It explains their development, use, and transportation. I enjoy your videos.

Great video. I spent a week on the upper French some years ago. Both the scenery and, fishing were great. I really want to get back someday. Your cedar strip canoe is georgeous, but it must be a little tricky compared to the much lighter new boats. I really admire your conviction of relocated to CA. Also appreciate your talent of capturing the immense beauty of Northern Ontario. New sub from Detroit.

@The-Dutch-Explorer agree pros and cons! It is great to have whatever you may need close at hand, but the masses can be a little too much. A few years back, I relocated in northern Michigan. The area was very beautiful and not too many people. Unfortunately, I have moved back to the burbs after I was offered a position, making significantly more bucks. I stayed with that job for 10 years. Before I could no longer take it but I still miss my pace up in Traverse City, MI. We are watching your Woodland Caribou trip now, a very beautiful place, great video! Cheers

They were definitely dogs, both wearing a big bright fluorescent collar (not visibleon the footage) with what looked like a gps tracker attached. At first site from a distance I definitely thought they were wolfs too! They followed me for a little bit and even swam a short distance to the next island over. They seemed very at home in the area and there was a cottage a little distance back where some guy was working on the place. I assumed they were his. 🐕

@sderby4297
@sderby4297 11 месяцев назад
Those dogs aren't the friendliest! The swim/run about 5 km to get to where you saw them. That's my island you saw them on, and we had issues with them attacking our dog and being aggressive towards us that summer. The last part from around the Crooked to the bay is actually called the Bad River (I think because of all the rapids), and the water was really high in June 2022. Respect for taking & portaging a cedar strip canoe! It would be the otters eating the "clams". At the Dallas Rapids area was the old French River Lumber Camp- not sure of the exact dates but it was still in operation I think in about 1916 (they took all the trees off our island that year, just after we purchase it). The old tar pot coming out of the mag channel was where there was an old commercial fishing camp- Gauthier's, they closed in the late 1960's or early 70's.
@The-Dutch-Explorer
@The-Dutch-Explorer 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for all that information! The dogs were a very odd encounter to run in to! Tons of history in the area and I’ll be back some time for sure! Probably a little later in the season. I might some time try and run the entire length of the French from Lake Nipissing but not with my wood canvas. I would like to try and run the rapids! Do you have a place on the island there? What a stunning area! I can only imagine what it would have looked like before covered in trees
@sderby4297
@sderby4297 7 месяцев назад
@@The-Dutch-Explorer literally, the island you saw the dogs was my island. We have 2 white cottages & various other white buildings looking out directly at the Bustard Islands & lighthouses. You would have paddled right past it. It's been in the family since 1916. My parents were teachers, so I spent my summers up there paddling our canoe around the area. I have an inland route, so you don't have to go out to the bay to get to the French. :) Just be careful running the rapids, lots of boat traffic in the Crooked- we run it with our 16'.

I usually go to Quetico for a 7-10 days in one of my 5 cedar strip canoes. We once did a family trip in power boats to a cabin in the Georgian Bay near the French river delta. I thought it would be more fun to canoe there. Lots of bears, lots of wind, lots of ways to get lost but not much luck fishing.

@The-Dutch-Explorer
@The-Dutch-Explorer Год назад
Hi Paul, I get what you’re saying and I agree to a certain point. But those pine needles were not as dry as they might look. Several storms had come through that day and everything was damp. Also I am not having a campfire there, I’m merely just having a fire long enough to boil water for my dehydrated meal which takes about 7 minutes with my twig stove. This entire time I supervise and stay right there with the fire with full water bottles close at hand just in case. There was very little risk if any. I do see your point of setting an example and this is something still very new to me. I’ll keep it it mind. Thanks Paul. Happy paddling

It does a little bit right? They would have a coal fire going in that compartment behind the door and then in the big tank there would be the water generating steam to power whatever was attached in this case I believe it would power the paddle wheels on the sides of the boat. And in the one I found under water it might have powered the winch, but I don’t know any of that for sure.
