I love how just like duckmate, this variant added freezemate and jumpmate

The "Any piece that lands in a frozen area becomes frozen" rule doesn't seem to do anything if freezes only last one turn. Maybe spells lasted several turns in an earlier version.

If you jump over your own piece standing on the 3rd rank with a pawn, an opponent's pawn can take two pieces at once with en passant!

I can't believe that in the first few games he played, he did an "oh no my king!". The fact that the scenario can happen is hilarious lol

I just hopped into analysis mode and found that if you jump a piece with your pawn, and an opponents pawn is in position to en passant, the pawn will capture the piece you hopped as well as your pawn. Two captures in one! I really liked watching this and would love to see some high level spell chess.

This actually seems like a very interesting chess variation, the clash feelings of the spell is still there too

The fact that the knights don't need the jump spell is a clever reference to the source material, Clash of Clans, where the hog(riders), which is what the knights are, can already jump over walls!

I would love to see more of this when people have started to develop strategies.

I love variants, it's like chess but with less opening theory. It emphasizes calculation and clever moves more than regular chess while still being instructive of the general strategies therein. Wonderful content :)

This is probably my favorite variant so far, it adds new rules without overcomplicating it too much.

Have you ever played chinese chess (xiang qi)? The rook with a jump spell is basically the same as the cannon piece in that game. The cannon moves like a rook but can't capture a piece it is looking at - it has to jump over another piece to capture the piece behind it. One of the most common openings is to put your opponent's king in check on move 1 by moving your cannon

It seems the freeze jump combo is pretty insane. If you can check the king regularly and freeze it at the same anything they use to block it can be jumped over the next move. I think you would have to do a counter freeze to stop it, and I'm pretty sure its a forced win if you do this when their freeze is recharging

I thought that it was great to add this new abilities that enable new mechanics and tactics. I hope to see more of Eric Rosen playing them. I was trying for myself and couldn't figure out how powerful a freeze can be (if the opponent can't counter-freeze on the next move)

Cool. I still recomend trying Patso Shako, too. Spell chess is a pretty interesting variant. Although, freezes somewhat neutralize each other, because you're incentivised to just counter your opponent's freeze with your own. If you freeze and your opponent can respond with no counter freeze without losing immediately, then it's a race for running out of freezes and you just lose afterwards. But I got to 1650 in a couple of days and it was still fun. Perhaps, there's a higher freeze meta that I haven't gotten into yet. Dodging jumps and still getting an okay position is challenging enough for now. Attacks on a castled king are super scary because of jumps.

Eric talking about his face swapping program reminded me of something. I have an app that turns photographs into different kinds of art. It does pictures that look like pencil sketches, pen drawings, oil paints, et cetera. I went to google images and downloaded pictures of Eric and Levy, had the program turn them into drawings, and I'm redrawing them on paper so that I can turn them into actual artwork. ...and don't judge me, I need the drawing and painting practice and I'm running out of stuff to draw. 😐

Is it possible to capture two pieces simultaneously with en passant in this variant? if I have a knight on c3 and jump over it to play c4, and you have a pawn on b4, can you play bxc3 taking both the knight and the pawn? I can't imagine any reason this would ever happen in an actual game, but if it's possible at all that's really amazing

If your opponent jumps one of their own pieces with a pawn, can you capture both the pawn and the piece they jumped with en passant?

Imo, jump is worth 5 points of material (since it can manifest the ability of a rook OR a bishop, but not both) and the freeze is worth 1 point of material (in the default gamemode where the duration only lasts one move, also becuase the opponent can counter-freeze). In custom gamemodes, I'd say if the freeze lasted more moves, it'd be worth that many points of material as well.

34:18 white freezes e7 and moves the queen in to e6 after that the only move is to counterfreeze the queen and do something else (very hard to see, but the only move is queen d8 to d7) then white does not defend the queen, but moves their bishop to b5 the king is now in double check* with jump potion without a freeze this cannot be defended and eric loses unless in this hypothetical he finds queen to d7. finally chess with only tactics and no strategy /j Edit: pawn to a6 also works, but it's unlikely to find either move with that giant queen threat

At 25:40 there was a way to save the pawn on b7. It was bd5 and if qxb7 the jump would have gotten you the queen!

A pawn, attacking a square which has been leaped over by an enemy pawn and is occupied by an enemy piece, may capture onto that square and thereby capture both enemy pieces at the same time. Imagine if you were the capturing pawn in this situation. You go to a square, you stab the enemy piece there, and while an enemy pawn is leaping overhead, you stab upward into it as well.

Just a follow up on the rules. You can capture two pieces at once, en passant after a pawn jumped a piece. However you may not do so if the pawn jumped your piece.

e3/e4 then d6/d5 is instant win for white, check with bishop and freeze, then when horse moves out move Queen to a5 and ur threatening two jump mates that opponent can’t block.

8:41 rook to d1 still wins though, either you take the king with the knight, or with the rook. unless white already blocks that while counter freezing, with the bishop or the knight... or with the rook jumping from a1 to e1 so that your rook would need to jump over both of their rooks which is impossible

With your analysis at the end, it still would have been checkmate even if you blocked with the queen, since they would still be able to jump it.

So the "Jump" basically just makes it like a long ranged checkers game, not stuck to diagonal movements, where as long as you can jump over a piece, the blank squares in between mean nothing, then you can freeze, seems a bit Gimicky but sure lols, what new chess variant be out next lols, maybe some funky mirror the board with a pocket knight outta nowhere next, like even Arimaa was inspired of chess even lols. However it's all fancy and new Gimicks all the time. The only thing in chess at least as long as you don't go "Fairy" is the pieces stay the same but have new Boosts of how to play. The only thing that Arimaa had that was kinda fun was the pulling and pushing things into Traps lols, the part of moving up to 4 times per move was a bit too crazy. The feature I like most with spell chess is just the "Jump" it does seem very balanced. Then Pocket Knights, but only adjacent to where a valid ending jump square can occur, to make it so they can't show up anywhere, probably just those 2 alone is literally a "Chess 2.0" The current game of chess doesn't freeze or block, so taking a page from that book, "Jump cards are fine", "Pocket Nights are fine but only adjacent to when an ending jump landing square can exist". Most pieces in the Fairy Chess line actually do what chess does, they don't Try to Freeze pieces or Lock squares down - To affect the board/pieces then "Duck chess and the Freeze in this." I remember a Chess evolved and man that was crazy lols, some of those pieces had no powers. and then others had Powers, I think "Moves without powers belong together" and "Moves with powers belong together" , seems when you combine them then you run into Checkmates where pieces and squares become inaccessible cuz they blocked or frozen. In Spell chess and Duck your accepting that both players can force a strong terrible block. Chess that only moves exist, at least you can Calculate much better sequentially move for move, expected moves as no powers are going on. If a power as in like the "Jump" exists then it would still be more move like, as a player can see a person has a Jump card available and also can see a problem piece on the board the Jump can attach to at least. Simpler games are easier for players to understand, this is why in many cases with new variants that use powers, you normally can't see your demise cropping up out of nowhere. Now if a Freeze was locked down to a specific piece and then that Freeze had a range from that piece, and then had a radius of effect from the Target square where pieces would be on. then Yes that calculable also as the variables are straightforward and literally can't just be anywhere on board. Game balance is always limiting things to where both sides can calculate, and not have it be as an "Infinite" board play scenario that goes anywhere at anytime. Limits do turn spells into calculatable moves as they have a narrow scope of when and where they are useful or not. However if you just want chaos alone, the "Arimaa board setup where players choose where anything goes, then the play rules of, Duck, and Freeze, and (Pocket Knights with no limits of where)" are the only 4 you ever will need till the end of time if you never ever want a game you can calculate, call that "Quantum Chess" at that point.

What's interesting is, if you use the jump spell you can create an opportunity for your opponent to double kill via en passant! For example: h5-h6 h10-h8 Bi4-g6 h8-h7 [Jump spell on g6] g5-g7 h7xg6 and xg7

Imagine the danger you'd feel if you had 0x 0x of your abilities left but your opponent still has 1. Custom handicaps like that would be fun to watch in Rosen vs Viewers games.

Played 2 games and won both, though the first one I think was a bug. (I checkmated his King with mine using Freeze, despite him having a freeze available that could've counter froze my King.) Anyway, the two things I learned are: Counter-Freezing is by FAR stronger than freezing first, unless you're triggering a checkmate state. Example, my 2nd win, I froze his king in place and moved my rook next to it, and he couldn't capture the rook or block the path. And threatening to jump a piece and capture the King can often force your opponent to only respond to you potential attacks, leaving them vulnerable to many mating opportunities due to the nature of the spells and how freezing interacts with the Kings.

This variant is so fun, I'm addicted.
