Im mainly an acoustic player, play a lot of rhythm stuff in my band, and having had strats, teles, les Paul's etc. I've actually found sgs to be the most similar in feel to playing an acoustic, especially when sat down (just something I've noticed) probably with how it rests on your leg, fret sizes and where the bridge sits. In tone it's warm but can be hot when needed. Really versatile tbh. SGs are for me are the most underrated electric guitars, glad I opened my eyes to them.

The classic/vintage Gibson bridge is called an ABR and they screwed right into the body of the guitar. The Nashville bridge was an update on that. The Nashville bridge screws into metal bushings in the body and it has a thumbwheel that raises or lowers the entire bridge. The Nashville bridge is also wider than the original ABR.
@landonbailey

that sounds like a quality upgrade. thanks for the info

Hi Landon. Welcome to the SG family. I have a number of guitars of different makes and from different manufacturers, but SGs are my favorite. I currently own four Gibson SGs and those are the guitars I play the most. Some of it is that emotional connection that I have to some of my favorite bands, like you have with Badfinger and Radiohead, but I love the feel of SGs and the tonal variety (it cleans up nicely and has a great mid-range growl). Gibson, IMO, has really stepped up their game the last two years under their current leadership and I really like the direction the company is heading. Anyway, thanks for the video and hope you have many hours of enjoyment playing your new guitar.

I imagine that everyone tries each brand/model at least once. I saw videos that list "the 5 guitars you must buy" and took it to heart. I own a couple of Fender Players, some G&Ls and Squiers. Tried Epi and liked those but now own two Gibson Tributes (2019 LP and 2021 SG) and love them. Both are flawless and I love the feel and sound, they are unique and everyone should try them. Not necessarily better than Fender or Gretsch or others but have that special Rock and R&R sound.

The SG is the best choice by far for me. Sounds great, not exactly like a Les Paul but close enough for a guitar that's like half the weight. The necks tend to be a little wider than stratocasters but their high fret access is way better. They do have neck dive issues, but like Landon said, they're easily solved. There's a reason it's the best selling guitar Gibson makes.

I have a 2001 SG Standard that looks basically identical to that one. I really like the thick neck. It's not quite 50s, but very beefy. I just added some Kluson Revolution 19:1 ratio tuners. I do not like the 490R and 498T pickups in mine, so I am going to install some P90 style pickups soon. You should try the "top wrap" stringing method where you deck the tailpiece and route the strings toward the back of the guitar and wrap them over the top. The tailpiece is making solid contact with the top, but the reduced angle over the bridge lowers the tension of the strings. I think it is more comfortable that way.

It seems that over the past few years Gibson has really turned their QC issues around, unfortunately it seems like Fender are now the one with issues mainly on their USA models. My SG came out of the box flawless, minus a volume pot that went out after a few weeks which Gibson warrantied without issue. Enjoy your SG!

Pete Ham played one in Badfinger, ( great great band) in the late 60,s into the early 1970,s , before he passed, but my point is if anybody listens or watches bad-finger video clips , from that time you will here Gibson at its best for that group and the music and sound that came out . Nashville bridge might just be a newer style designed after they moved out of Michigan. 50’s Standard LP has the older style ABR bridge. Might have been designed for increased adjustment or was it cheaper to manufacture?
@ertugrulkaraduman5008
@ertugrulkaraduman5008 2 года назад
The Nashville bridge is WAY more stable from a construction point, since it's mounted tight in metal posts it can't lean forward under string pressure so easily. The ABR bridge is a historical feature / marketing ploy to make it seem more high end, yet it is easier and cheaper to implement.

Thanks again Landy you usually guitar with troy. I'll happen to love gibson's. I'm an old fart and everyone that I love to play gibson's. My main love is the firebird. 1973 Johnny winter's third album comes out and on the cover he's holding his firework. That was my that was the start of a love of Firebirds and of Johnny Winter who is my favorite. And I know he's hanging out in heaven and wishing he's still at his firebird there maybe he does who knows? LOL I didn't mention the price on my last comment that I paid for my Firebirds and the firebird is stacked with specs. For instance it came with steinberger tuners these are amazing tunas that the easiest then and best soon as I have on any of my guitars. They fit the firebird perfectly because. Stop voice test Chrome on the front of the headstock when you lock them in and they're beautiful in the back is bigger turn them so sort of like the original banditsuness in that respect. Those those tuners are really expensive. It's got titanium saddles it's got cryogenically treated threats originally I thought that was some kind of snake oil thing like tone polishers advertised for. I actually resourced it quite a genital cryogenically treated metal is used in aeronautics and space it increases the strength and hardness by 400% of its original it's original hardness. So yeah it really is a thing and so far the frets haven't even worn a bit quite and I played a lot and I would think they're on par with it's not better than stainless steel because and you don't get that brightness that you get from stainless steel. I can go on with the specs but I'll leave it at that. I paid out the door delivered with a case a case of the size of a coffin with a leather strap with the all-in-one guitar tool kit $1,340 $1,340 yeah the guitar is worth quite a bit more used than it was when the for what I paid for it new. I though do not buy a guitar ever with the sort of selling it. It's nice to know guitars you have of increasing value all of mine have just in these past few years. Because I love the guitars I buy that's why I buy them if I didn't like if the guitar specifically maybe there was a blemish on it something didn't play right you know I would send it back for another one but I wouldn't just sell a perfectly good guitar that I bought because I wanted. Well I'm my next purchase will be another ramp I own it one two band stage right 15 watt 2 band yeah stays right monoprice no it's not a piece of shit it happens to be an amazing amp and if he's anything and it's a category. I also own the boss katana KTN 100 version 1 since I'm blind I never bothered the helping it up to a computer so it hasn't even been updated. I play it like I would any am just as it is. I also own another way that won't even mention I gave it to someone that's alona I'll mention it was the first thing if I want to go along with my first guitar in 27 years the yesterday on now it's a mustang one virgin one. When I first plugged my guitar into it I had nothing at all to compare it to cuz again I hadn't touched anything it's all related as close to 30 years and I was happy with it and I was pretty amazing what I could do. But once I bought the katana and realize that that mustang version 1 I guess says The beginner's practice app is fine but it's basically has the weather used to me except loading it out lol. And I'm thinking of buying the 50 watt I think it's the sb20 stage right head all too bad which is another amazing amp is 400 bucks. I was thinking of buying a Harley Benton vertical twin cabinet 2x12 with celestion vintage 30s in them but my stage right 15w has an output for speaker extension cabinet so I could use it for that and then I can use it for the head if I'm not mistaken the head has three ohm options on the back I mean if anyone reads this and knows nothing about it go check out the reviews and the specs on the 50 watt stays right mono price you'll be very surprised. And yeahyeah I think you people will be surprised if they check that out. I should have bought a better ram probably after my first or second guitar cuz the truth is your guitar is only going to sound as good as the amp and the speaker was coming out of. But you know I wanted a good guitar you know I'm going to stop playing again I don't want to have to fucking kill myself and my hands and fingers trying to play the guitar again. I never realized how much I depended on looking at the key at the fretboard and my hands when I was playing but apparently it was all the time. Now I play I'm not as good as I was then but I still have I don't play as often as I did that either but you know my age I got arthritis carpal tunnel syndrome all that crap so and the biggest problem is not being able to see what I'm playing if my problems you can see but I'm playing I would have progressed much quicker and who knows how well I'll be playing now. But yeah now I just pick up the guitar and we can look because if I look I don't see LOL anyway I'll stop here cuz another novel thanks for your video man again enjoy your guitar and buy another gibson. You know for the prices I charge for a lustful standard and the price to charge for a standard firebird 5 I don't see why people don't buy the firebird. They sound remarkably different. That's probably a reason sincerely us, about the blind personas PS my my SG isn't as light as I hear other people say and I don't think it's as thin as the other it might be but definitely sooner than a Les Paul that's for sure it's as soon as in my firebird I don't think so? I'm not sure. But yeah I advise people to play if I ever see what you're saying

I have been looking at SGs for a while as well. Waiting to see what the Phil X Gibson will be like (He did a video awhile back and said it would be an SG probably single pickup, also wanted a Phil X action figure in the empty neck pickup that would yell Phill X!). It would be cool if they made the body a bit thicker like the Brain Ray SG. That way it would balance a little better? The natural flying V is in the running as well.

Gibson typically uses 500k on their humbucker guitars to combat muddiness, and Fender typically uses 250k to tame brightness of their single coils. That’s pretty much standard. You can safely assume this SG has 500k pots.

I’m from Ottawa too and recently bought the exact same SG (my first SG but also have Les Paul custom) but got from kijiji. Have you tried doing a lot of bending on the G string? Is it staying in tune after releasing the bend? Gibsons are notorious for that string not staying in tune. Has to due with design of headstock, bent backwards and strings split side to side (3 on one side, 3 on other) this causes string to get stuck in the nut slots, appose to fender where the strings go straight and direct to tunners, little friction for them getting stuck.

Landon Bailey Tarbacks (officially named “Super Humbuckers”) were Humbuckers made for certain Norlin era Gibsons by Bill Lawrence in the 70s. They were lower resistance (around 5k neck and 7.5k bridge) but had ceramic pickups and, I think, were the first potted Gibson humbuckers (the epoxy used to pot the coils is what “tar back” refers to.

I dig it man. Those stock gibson Pickups actually sound pretty damn good in most applications 👌 Some people say you get better resonance with an ABR-1 style bridge vs a Nashville, due to the studs being directly drilled into the body.The ABR 1 has a couple drawbacks though, the little retainer clip over the saddle adjustment screws and the screw heads facing the bridge Pickup make them kind of a pain in the ass to adjust intonation in my opinion. Hey I really want a guitar just like you have in the background, blue tele with a maple board. Only new ones I can find are the ultra series and that's a little spendy.
