My First Job After Dental School - Working in a Public Health Clinic

My first job after dental school was at a public health clinic. A lot of times, community health dentistry is overlooked, but it can be a great job for a new graduate.
The income is often comparable to a corporate job, and often you can get some forgiveness for student loans. At my job, I learned to get pretty good with extractions and dentures, and as a practice owner I still utilize those skills on a daily basis. It might not be the perfect job for everybody, but it was the perfect situation in my case, and I was able to buy a solo private practice one year after graduation.

Thank you so much for this video! I feel like it was made specifically for me. I've always known I wanted to go into public health straight out of dental school but had not been fortunate enough to meet anyone that has taken this route. I think its a good way to give back to the community and even gain speed that will be valuable in the future.

I have spoken to people of the community health aspects. Most say that it can take less than 10 in private practice but it obviously depends on the production like you said. However, you shared some interesting takes and benefits from public health clinics was eye opening and has made me think about it. I'm leaning towards private practice out of school or 1-3 years of an associateship leading into private practice. Who knows what will happen in the years to come, especially with covid right now.

One thing is that many Doctors/Dentists in the military do moonlighting in their off hours, weekends and leave periods. Both for the extra money and to widen their skills.

@@dzikijohnny Yeah that’s true, I think it depends on command you end up at. Some allow moonlighting and others do not.

First I want to say great videos, keep it up! I’m an incoming D1 at UIC. In the year 2024, I plan on going public health or rural for 1-2 years and then going to private practice to purse ownership. Any real free time I have I will spend learning the business aspects of private practice and trying to further strengthen my network. I have some marketing experience in both corporate and small business
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 4 года назад
Awesome!! If you are following the business aspect of dentistry, definitely keep an eye on DSOs. There are some bigger DSOs like Aspen but a lot of much smaller ones too that are buying up private practices. I think you'll be in a good position in 2024, hopefully the economy is bouncing back by then.

Originally I was looking to get a year under my belt in private practice and grind to get into ownership ASAP. but now with the current circumstance, and with the restrictions where I reside, i'm considering going more the residency route while things calm down a bit.
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 4 года назад
You can't go wrong with a GPR or AEGD. If you get into the right residency, you could be doing implants and IV sedation (probably more likely in the right GPR).

Thanks so much! I can't imagine how much things have changed with COVID for you guys. The good news is the most valuable experience you get happens after dental school anyway; I honestly think you guys will be completely fine.

Throw me out into the DSO, corporate whatever for a year or 2 if I can't find a private practice that is willing to be a mentor. My tuition is pretty high so I'll need to get on it. PSLF is scary because I hear many people get screwed.
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
As much as I hate to say it, I also have heard some news stories about people not getting PSLF that were supposed to. I worked for a year in public health, did not take the loan repayment or anything, and my pay was really similar to the associateship I was offered in a good office. The good news for you guys is there are a lot of practices for sale right now, even if the job market isn’t great. I don’t think loans kick back in till 2021, and there’s nothing wrong with doing Repaye while you’re getting your head above water.

I am an NHSC scholarship recipient which pays for 4 years of school. In return I give 4 years of service in a qualified NHSC public health clinic. D1 here at UNLV! Love your videos brother. Cheers.

I like community clinics and what they do. My issue is looking at the pay+loan forgiveness it rarely seems to add up. You could also work in a dso or associateship with a good production/collection % and tackle the loans better over the same time period. I still have a while to figure it out

You're putting out stellar content! I am a predent applying this cycle and I was wondering if you need any specific qualifications to work at public health clinic or FQHC (if that isn't the same thing)? Keep up the great work!
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
Thanks so much!! You don't need anything special to work in a community health clinic. In fact, there are some dentists who work in private practice, but one day a week, they will work in a public health type clinic. Good luck this cycle!

Great video. I'm a new grad from dental school looking to get a job as a public health dentist in central Florida. Wanted to know if you have any tips for looking/finding positions in a public health clinic. Besides the HRSA site I'm finding it difficult to find open positions to apply for.
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
Hey Andre! When I found my job, I just called the clinic I was interested in working at and I think just asked if I could shadow there. It never hurts to just make connections. Those jobs have a lot of turnover, so there will likely be some openings. You could also google FQHC in whatever location you are looking to live in. It takes a lot of work, and you send out a lot of resumes, so you will get a lot of "no" answers. But you really only need one "yes"! If I hear of any other advice, I will reply here again. Good luck!

my dental school is giving me zero implant experience and very minimal endo. I looking at going into AEGD. what is your opinion on going into AEGD vs going into work right after dental school. which one is better? what is your opinion on AEGD?
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
I think AEGD can be a great option, especially if it is heavy in surgery and/or sedation. Honestly, I know of some very successful general dentists that started with an AEGD/GPR that gave them the springboard to jump right into bigger cases with confidence. I know others that just wanted a 5th year of dental school, and pretty much came out of AEGD doing bread and butter like everyone else. I think it probably depends on the residency, but it can be a great option at least in my opinion if you try to make the most out of it. It could be really helpful to talk to the existing residents and see why they chose AEGD, what their goals are. Good luck!

Awesome to hear!! It’s a great service to the public, and you can make a good income. Keep in mind, there are a lot of differences between different public health clinics; if you find a job you don’t love, you can always look around for other jobs.

Thank you for the informative video! I worked in corporate dental offices and private practice for the last ten years and just got a job offer at a Public Health Clinic. I am preparing myself for this transition. You mentioned that you did a lot of extractions, dentures and fillings, did you do root canals? Can you refer out difficult surgical extractions and root canals?
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 2 года назад
Thank you for watching! What you do depends a lot on what public funding pays for. In my state, Medicaid paid for fillings, extractions and partials and dentures. They did pay for root canals for people under 21 years old. I think it depends completely on your state. Where I worked, the closet oral surgeon was the dental schools about 2 hrs away. We were pretty ambitious about teeth we would take out, but a high risk case I would still refer. Also, if you work somewhere with a lot of doctors, there may be one or two that really like to do extractions and can help you or even take the more complicated cases. Good luck!

would you say dental school is slightly easier than medical school? also what good advice would you have for high schoolers wanting to go into dentistry? ---- short yet informative video!!
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
Thanks so much! My sister went through med school. From what I have seen, I would say the didactic portion of med school is probably a little bit harder, but not by a ton. What makes dental school hard is that there is didactic stuff (studying for test and quizes) as well as hands on projects at the same time. So you will be studying for a quiz, but also have to turn in a lab project the next day. If you are good with your hands (arts and crafts) it can be a lot easier. For someone that wants to go into dentistry, I would say connect with as many people as you can, and see if you can do some job shadowing. Good Luck!

I'm starting my d1 this year and I was curious will need a GPR to work in a community health clinic?
@BeyondDentistry
@BeyondDentistry 3 года назад
In most states, you can just go straight to work after you graduate. I believe New York requires a one year residency in order to get a license, and I think that would apply to public health. But you can get a license in most states without a residency, and most public health jobs only require a license.
