My First Rolex + Love/Hate Relationship with the Explorer (124270 Hands-On Review)

A Review of my 36mm Rolex Explorer ref. 124270. After covering this watch and the many evolutions of the Explorer for what must be 5 years, to finally own one and appreciate the subtleties of the newest reference has made the experience so cathartic. From its extremely wearable size and discretion its to well executed dial, there's nothing about this watch that makes you yearn for more. One lesson I've learnt from this is experience is that the Explorer can be seen as an end in itself, not a means to an end.

Let’s hear your Rolex Explorer story! Share any and all experiences you’ve had with these pieces over the years and if you’re looking to get one, ask away. I’m sure there are more than a few of us here who’d really want to share what we’ve learnt. Thank you all for your continued support over here, it's always a privilege sharing videos like these with you 🥃

I’m so conflicted. I’m on the AP wishlist for a 124270. I tried it on and immediately was swept up in the romance of all the things you talk about…..But since then I’ve been researching Rolex. The whole Hans Wildorf Foundation cultish secrecy with its Swiss Tammany Hall type policial influence…..I’m wondering if all your waxing poetic about Rolex is a by-product of subversive marketing….because reality is there is no mystique about Rolex…it’s a watch with a movement.

I lusted for an Explorer for decades and picked up the 214270 to commentate my son’s birth. The 36mm is “The Explorer” but it was not available in 2011. I won’t part with that watch until my son is ready to care for it for the rest of his life.

You don't own the Everest watch. Sick of hearing professional watch journalists get this wrong. The Explorer didn't exist in 1953, and the Oyster Perpetual was absolutely NOT worn to the summit. Hillary said so, Rolex acknowledged it and apologizes publicly to Smiths in period. Owned an Explorer, prefer the OP reference 116000. Same watch with but minor differences, all of which I prefer.

Bought mine in 2008 during the financial crisis. Lehman just collapsed, I walked into a Rolex store in the heart of Zurich, no waitlist, no nothing. They even gave me a 5% cash discount. Imagine that today. 5k flat in local currency, at that time around 4k USD. Runs smooth like on day one, never had it revised. Might be time though.

I’ve owned my 124270 for 3 years and wear it 95% of the time. You are the first reviewer to rightly nail he pre 14270 true vintage feeling of this watch. Well done. You hit the nail on the head. I waited for over 15 years to finally get an Explorer. In the 90’s they were difficult to get plus expensive for me as a man in his 20’s. Fast forward into my late 40’s and somewhat settled into a good life. I got the call once this watch was released. First purchase from my AD, not history or much of a relationship. Sure I could have bought the old 36mm but I wanted one of my own, for this Rolex. I wanted to settle for the 39mm but with the pandemic and Rolex shortage I never got the call for the 39mm. Thankfully I was first on my AD’s list when this came out. As soon as it debuted I ran to my AD the next morning. It arrived before my 50’s birthday. Ever since it really kills the need for another Rolex. It’s a true one and done, and I have a hard time between the Sppedy and Explorer. I’m so great full and blessed.

Good for you. One is enough. It is basically the same movement they put in most of their watches. It is plenty water resistant. There is no point in spending $10,000 or more for another model. My brother bought me an OP, which I wore for 10 years. It still keeps great time, though I rarely wear it.

I'm 31, I've been in the watch game for some five years, and I got my 124270 around a year ago. I'm a sucker for details and quite adventurous when it comes to trying new styles. I'd say I've flipped around 50 watches, give or take a dozen. The 124270 is the only watch - ever - that I've described as perfect. To me, it's pure perfection. It's Rolex going 100 % for making a perfectly proportioned, robustly built, and yet quite subtle watch. It does it all, besides screaming "look at me, I'm a Rolex". It's quality and craftmanship in a classy and mature way. I hope, and honestly believe, that I will keep this one with me for as long as I breathe.

Nice work. My 214270 MK2 is the last watch I would ever sell. For me, 39mm wears better than 36. I travel with this watch, swim with it, and go out with it. It does not scream Rolex, and only watch people spot it. Great watch for all the reasons you describe and then some. Bought mine used at slightly over retail thanks to a cheap Yen.

My wife got me a 124270 a little over two years ago for our 20th, and it is probably on my wrist 4/7 days since. I’m not a Rolex fan, but this watch is just about the perfect watch, and more “me” than any other watch. Your comment about the watch you’d wear when you’re 80 resonated with me. I also recently lost my dad, who was into watches but very much not into Rolex. I also appreciated how you touched on the geometry of how the hands intersect with points on the watch as they go around. They do that with the novella of text on the dial, too, and it even makes that charming. I have had mine in 1x to correct the amplitude accuracy issue that affects some of these movements. It has been rock solid since. I purchased and had it serviced through the local AD, part of WoS group. That has not been a great experience, but also I’m fine with this being my only Rolex, so I don’t care to have a deep and meaningful personal relationship with a reseller of goods. Excellent channel, and excellent video.

I bought a 124270 Explorer about 6 months ago from my AD after a 6 month wait. It’s my only Rolex and I don’t feel the need to own another. I wanted the watch because of how it looked and I wasn’t even aware of the Everest connection until I went into my AD to try on the 36mm and 40mm versions to see which suited me best. I have 3 other watches, all Omega and all in the 38-39.5mm size. The Explorer does feel small when I initially put it on but after a while it makes the other watches look large on my 6.2” wrist. I could quite happily sell my other watches and only have the Explorer for the rest of my life. I’m not going to, but I could!

Glad you are enjoying your Explorer so much! I too recently purchased an Explorer for my milestone birthday - albeit the 40mm 224270. Both are tremendous watches and I think offering two distinct sizes is a smart move on Rolex’s part. Somehow I feel the 224270 doesn’t get enough credit; it’s finally an upsized Explorer done ‘right’ and fixes many of the quirky proportions of the 39mm whilst preserving the overall silhouette. Long live the Explorer…I wish you many years of good health and enjoyment with yours! 🍻

224270 does not get credit because whichever “imperfections" 39 may had (still can’t find ‘em since 2020), 40 made them worse. It became thicker, more “negative space”, and “Explorer” moved from 6 to 12, adding to the dissymmetry of the dial. P.S. Read Monochrome article "Hands-on: Some Thoughts About The New Rolex Explorer 40 Reference 224270"

Sorry to hear about your dad. I lost mine in 2017. Someone said to me, “he will seem closer to you now than he ever did before.” I knew immediately what the person meant, though the closeness made his absence harder, because it was an intimacy that I couldn’t share with him in a way that was completely satisfying. I love the Explorer, but I could never own one, because I’ve come to the realization that I absolutely require a date window. I don’t even like the look of date windows, but when I wear a watch without the date, I drive myself crazy looking to see what the date is.

I remember watching your video of the 39mm not long before I got the 124270. It was not my first Rolex, that would be the 126710. But your description of the Explorer’s lessons in restraint hit home for me. I took a cross country trip last year to relocate, and this little watch was the one I brought for the month. Subtle, understated. Deceptively rugged, yet can span a wide range of events and places. I thought the19mm lug width would keep me from removing the bracelet, but it is as much of a strap monster as my speedy. I’m glad your brought you much joy after a tumultuous year.

The 124270 can feel a bit small after wearing a bigger watch, mainly because of the bracelet taper but after a couple of hours it feels perfect. The easy link is very useful. If forced to go down to one watch this would be it. Great in the outdoors, very easy to read, goes well with a suit, rugged, waterproof, good-looking.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I feel the same in many ways : a "reset" watch, the perfect "one Rolex" watch to own. That was my reasoning at least..."If I could ever only buy/wear ONE Rolex model, which one would it be ?" After waiting over a year for not getting this 124270 (guess the AD never really took my request), I bought a used 114270, and actually now prefers it: slightly lighter, no engraved rehaut, the good ol' classic stamped clasp...The lacquered ink dial is a masterpiece. The only drawback, for a one-and-only watch, is the weak/lack of lume. This is where the new 124270 shines (pun intended).

I’ve owned my 36 inch Rolex explorer for over 30 years. I beat the heck out of it at one point I chipped the crystal and it got pretty scratched up. I never serviced it for 30 years and it started losing time finally so I took it to a watchmaker and they replaced the crystal and cleaned it up. It’s the greatest watch ever, although I did get a Submariner in the meantime and I love that too. The 36 inch is the way to go. The 39 to me looks bizarro and there’s even a 40 out there which is even more insane! If you want to get a 40 inch time only Rolex get the OP. Thanks for all the great videos. Keep them coming. My Explorer story starts with a Submariner in 2015. I really loved the 39mm Explorer, but having the small handset I bought the Sub and moved on. Then they released the 39mm Mk2 which I didn’t have the funds to buy. Fast forward to 2021 and the 36mm. Yes, I’m in, but after trying one thought it was too small (despite owning a 36mm DateJust). When the 40 was released I was convinced this would be perfect. However, on trying it on there was just something about the size I couldn’t get on with. I then started thinking about the 36 again, and watching a few videos on here confirmed it. Instead of saying it could wear bigger, etc., it was about embracing a small watch. Classic size, deal with it. Tried it on again and was 100% sure. In October I was in Harrods (where I purchased my Sub 8 years before), asked about it and left my details. 6 days later I got the call. It’s 100% a keeper and I love the size and wearability, even on my 7.25” wrist. It could easily be my only watch, but where would the fun be in that. 🙂

I fell in love with the Explorer 1 when I first saw a fine used example in the window of a Bond Street jeweller. I couldn’t afford it then, and instead bought a new 30th Anniversary Speedmaster Pro, which I still love. Whilst I still hanker after the Explorer, I think they have grown more and more glitzy with every iteration, and that’s just not me. The other Rolex I’ve always loved is the early Pepsi GMT Master, but feel that has suffered the same fate, particularly in recent years, becoming way too chunky, unsubtle and obvious. Today, I’m wearing my Omega Apollo 8 DSotM Speedy in memory of the late Bill Anders.

It is my most versatile watch - wear it to the gym, the office - everywhere. The taper in the Oyster bracelet is just right, but I normally wear it on a NATO or a black sailcloth band. (Yes, the. 17mm width makes getting good straps a bit trickier but any wider or narrower would ruin the proportions.) After decades of evolution, the 224270 is design perfection.

After 1.5 years on near daily wear, I’ve come to appreciate the Exp1 124270’s bracelet as the best feature of the watch. Yes, It’s smaller than previous generations. But, 1mm of difference is completely invisible to anyone but the most discernible wearer. That slight decrease in size somehow translates to a monumental increase in comfort. I dont know how or why it feels better, but it just does. For me, comfort is more important to me than appearing 1mm larger.

Yes, the size takes visual adjustment, but the best things take a bit of work! And the 36mm is important - it shouldn't be a big watch (with a dial the size of a Sub, it doesn't need to be). At 36mm it hugs the wrist, slides under cuffs, outdoor gloves, motorcycle leathers; never catches on rock, never snags on rope or line. 36mm is key to the visual restraint, function and the versatility. Love it!

Welcome to the club! As an owner of the Pepsi, Starbucks, and an OP41 in green, the Explorer still gets the most wrist time and was the only watch that felt so natural when I first put it on. It's also the only Rolex that I own that has never stopped running since purchased new from my AD LOL. It just melted away and felt like a companion rather than an accessory. A true purist's watch. Here's to many more years with my lil buddy.

The fact that you were not satisfied with the first one, and waiting for the next version to see if any magic came your way on the second watch should tell all of us to just cool our heels, wait, reflect, realize that something else is around the corner. For me, I wanted an Explorer from the 90s with the tritium that could potentially patina. So I chose the 14270 as a 42nd birthday present. I tend to collect things from on or around 1999, which was a happy time for me, full of friends, family and innocence before the internet made everyone miserable. It shares wrist time with a '99 30th Anni Speedy, and some other pieces lol. Wear that Explorer in good health! I'm sorry to hear about your loss and thank you for sharing your watch journey with us.

I liked the look of the 36mm Explorer and purchased it a few years ago. Since then it has continued to grow om me. At first I thought it was too simple, but it has become the go to watch in my collection. Fits in perfectly at work or on weekends. Its just such a good all rounder and I really didn't appreciate that fact until wearing it for a few weeks.

The magic of the explorer dial is when you angle it to a bright reflection like a computer screen or a window and all the white gold elements catch the light. How something can be so elegant and not feel overly feminine is the magic

Totally agree, light bouncing off the white gold numerals is very satisfying. It's the little things about this watch like the quality of the polishing on the side of the links and the sides of the case. It seems boring but every time you put it back in after rotating, the love comes right back.

So glad you gave a positive mention to the 224270 Explorer 40. After a year of waiting, I picked up mine a few weeks ago. Never thought I'd own a Rolex but I was determined to make it happen and always wanted an Explorer. It wears small for a 40mm watch. It's actually a little under 39mm. Great proportions and sits very nicely on the wrist. Since owning it my desire to chase watches has diminished greatly. I just don't think I could find another watch that I would enjoy wearing more. And crazy accuracy. Left overnight crown up, I get under 2 seconds a week! A great deal of money for me but worth every penny.

I got the call from my AD last week, the 40mm Explorer was in that I had waited 6 months for. I went into the AD the next day and put it on my wrist, something was missing. I asked if I could try the 36 mm on one more time, "yes", the manager said but you would have to wait again for the 36 mm. "I'd like to try it on one more time, in any case", I said. I put it on and and a big smile evolved on my face. - - I think your video encapsulates exactly what I was going through between the 40 and the 36. I respectfully bowed out of purchasing the 40 and asked if I could wait for the 36 : )

Great video. The Explorer is my exit watch the 124270 36mm. I thought about the 114270 because you can find it cheaper, but i believe I would not be happy with anything but the new 36mm. I have my grail Rolex which is the 114300 Rhodium dial, I remember seeing it on the WatchTime cover in 2015. I have a 2019 model and had thought about trading it towards an Explorer but I want both. I believe that duo would be the quintessential Rolex collection. I’ve always wanted a 114060M 2009 or 2010 but I refuse to pay what is asked for it. Thank you for how you expressed what the Explorer means, I couldn’t agree more with it. Yes it is the one watch I want to wear when I’m 60, 70, 80.

I used to own a black on black BMW E46 3-series 5-speed with sport package. It wasn’t anything amazing - just an excellent execution of a 4-door sedan in terms of comfort, performance, features, and quality. I liked it more than the E90 I replaced it with, or the X3 I’ve got now. My Explorer reminds me of that car - a well-made item that does things better than a run-of-the-mill counterpart.

My 124270 will be celebrating its first anniversary in August. It's become my "dumb reach"; when in doubt, Explorer. I tried to get one in 2022, but wasn't that serious and had my heart set on a 3861 Speedmaster anyways, which ended up being my significant purchase that year. I tried again last year, same AD, different sales associate. The experience was part job interview, part watch nerds, nerding out about watches. They had the two tone on display, which I handled and tried on, but the sale associate also let me handle his own personal 124270 that day, something I really appreciated. I "got the call" (an email) three weeks later. If there's anything I "dislike" about it, it's that I basically have to force myself to wear other timepieces.

I traded my 114270 for the 214270 as my wrist is a little bigger and it took me a bit to get back into the size after wearing my larger dive watches. Looking down at the wrist and in off wrist shots the proportions of the 36mm watches are beautiful. Since I’m a bigger guy it looked too small in the mirror and in photos. This was an interesting video, didn't expect you to get the Explorer, given you previous opinions and videos on it, but I can also understand how you came around. I got mine as a gift for my 30th as well, and I knew my parents weren't in any kind of position to spend that kind of money on a watch, but I got a bonus from work and use some of it + some savings to attain my Explorer, and it was the best decision I ever made. I think the Explorer has a slow release, understated charm, it's a perfect everyday companion, my 124270 has been with me everywhere and I've owned mine about just over a year now. But my forever watch is my sub 126610ln, that’s the one I still want on my wrist when I’m 80. But as I got older, and cel phones became a thing, I realized I really didn't need more than that from my watch. Dates, days, chronographs, gmt complications are all on my phone. But key is the size and wearability. As you state well, it just wears effortlessly and vanishes on the wrist. It demands nothing, as one would expect of a true companion. All the best.

I am far from being a Rolex fan, but I purchased the Explorer 214270 Mk2 for the simple reason that I thought the 39mm case was perfect for my wrist and I liked it better than any of the 39mm OP variants. It has some minor weaknesses, but I still wouldn't upgrade to the 224270 because my biggest issue with it cannot be eliminated anyway, namely the very high susceptibility to scratches.

There are times where I think that if I had the 36mm Explorer, it would definitely be the only watch I would wear or ever want. At other times, I just don’t care for it at all.
