MY FIRST THREADUP KIT RESULTS | Real Talk about How Much I Made | Selling Adventures 

No value judgment here, but I wouldn't characterize it as a rip-off. To me it's another indicator of how overrun we are with Stuff, clothing in particular. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your cute leggings and nice shirts, but they are virtually a dime a dozen. You are selling to a business who wants to make a profit, and further, that business has to risk someone actually wanting what they buy. But I'm not saying it wasn't worth trying; I get the motivation and, you never know. Related tangent lol: The idea of "collectibles" being valuable. They're only as valuable as someone else will pay for them, and over the decades, that fluctuates a lot. Or depreciates entirely. My grandparents had some vintage items and collectibles; when I cleaned out their house I simply let most of it go, because every last item of "oh, interesting!" had multiple dupes on eBay or other marketplaces listed for months at maybe $15. Sometimes--oftentimes--we have to just let things go and take a less cluttered, less burdened life, as the payoff. (And imo it's a good one.) People could have a garage sale, where items are often priced "down" even more because of buyer expectation; even if you got $3 per item, after factoring in time and labor to have a sale, the profit margin might not be much better. Although it might be more satisfying! Unless items are very niche and tangibly valuable, there doesn't seem much worth in trying to be a reseller unless you have volume (which brings us back to ThredUp and similar!). Donation to good places and causes, and for-certain recycling, are my satisfaction. One of the hardest components of getting rid of things is the feeling it's a total loss. A waste. Moreover, the guilt of spending so much over time represented in a pile of shirts that might be worth $15 to a reseller. I always tell people I'm doing reorganizing work with not to think about stuff in terms of guilt or getting something "back." The money is long gone, the experience of getting the item was had, being ready to declutter is the mission now. Keep on keeping on, Team Peeling Away

I’ve let go of the idea of selling clothes. I donate to my local animal society’s thrift shop. All proceeds go to the animals and keeping the animal society running. They have a women’s boutique as well so I like to give my nice clothes to them. It makes decluttering feel SO GOOD because I feel like I am helping animals. I wish everyone had this opportunity because it is a great local asset.

There is also the option of giving the clothes to a woman's shelter. A lot of the women leave their homes with just the clothes on their back. They need and could appreciate a gift of clothing. You never get what you pay for things.😊

They ripped you off!

I have tried Thredup and in my opinion it’s a scam.I sent 4 pairs of brand new never worn brand name jeans and I got pennys but they were sold for $35 -$45. I will give away and donate my stuff.

I would not use them again, total rip off. They made a lot of money selling your items. You would be better selling on ebay you could group items together. So sorry that they ripped you off, lesson learned. Thank you for letting us know.

I had looked into ThredUp because Poshmark is so slow going and you have to store the items for a long time. For what Thredup paid, I would rather donate the items and take the tax credit. I am so in awe of you. You are a wonderful woman and I am so happy to have found you to watch. You are a great inspiration!

Financially, it makes more sense to donate the clothing and get a charitable tax write-off than to sell through ThredUp, unless you have higher-end items. I stopped doing it once they started charging that $15 processing fee. Look for clothing recycling bins such as Planet Aid or Clothes Bin in parking lots of grocery stores and convenience stores. They will recycle whatever textiles aren't salable.

It might help to remember that every item that is removed from your home equals money. You have more time and with that time you can focus on your work. You save money because you can find your items instead of buying things that you can’t find. It also means better health which is worth $.

Thanks for sharing your Thread Up experience. I don't think I will bother with it now. I, too, am happy that if they don't take it they will donate or recycle it, but I think the percentage that they share with you is just not fair. I'd rather donate locally. Happy to see the pups outside getting some sun and play time. I am so looking forward to the nice weather.

Sent 5 items in for the first time and very recently. Three of the five items sold. One item was a Ralph Lauren sweatshirt parka new with tags $125. My cut was $3. Never again. eBay is not the same as it once was either. Every future item will be going to donation. Lesson learned.

I have decided to donate my useable clothing and linens or household goods to a thrift store that supports the SPCA. If the linens or toys etc are not usable by humans anymore than I donate them to the SPCA directly for the shelter dogs or cats in their kennels. To go further if a towel or shirt is in tatters, I tear them up to use as rags for cleaning or painting etc. I can’t remember the last time I threw away clothing or linens. There is far too much waste at the moment and that includes our linens and clothing. Keep doing amazing Mira❤

People keep "collectibles" in original packaging because it might fetch a higher price when they sell them in the future. Me, I only buy something I want to look at, not because I might want to resell it some day. Unbox the things you like and enjoy them! The real value is the enjoyment something brings you. ❤

I donate to a local church that has a store, and that helps the local communities with field days events . The money stay local .

Yikes! I definitely don’t think ThredUp is for me. You never know until you try so Thank you Mira for taking one for the Team so to speak. 😂 Having said that, I am so happy for you that you got rid of so many clothing pieces and were able to thin out the closet some. My one experience using ThredUp was disappointing. I sent a large bag with clothes, including some almost new jeans, jeans with tags on and some shoes I had hardly worn. They have notified me that several of my items have sold, but my account still shows I have no credit, so I don't understand their model for how you earn credit, I assumed that I would get credit for a portion of anything that sold. That isn't the case. All in all, if it's just about getting rid of stuff it's easier to take things to the Goodwill.

I had thought about maybe trying it with some of my unwanted clothes but now I don't think I'll bother, so thanks for saving me the wasted time and effort! I think your plan to decorate that shelf with "nerd" decor is a great idea. You spent the money to buy these things, and you should certainly enjoy them - and yes, OUT OF THEIR BOXES! 👏 It was nice to see the dogs outside. They're so cute 💕

Thank you for posting this about Thred Up! Not only does it make not want to send stuff but also not buy anything from them. I understand its a For Profit business, but not sharing more or decreasing the "processing" fee makes it an absolute scam. Buuhbyyye Thred Up!

I personally feel like selling clothes is a waste of time unless you have high dollar items with name brands. It’s just not worth the headache😂 Also I love that you took Dr. Strange out of the box he deserves to be displayed!!❤

I haven't bothered to sell clothes before and was thinking about doing it. Now with this information I shall carry on and just donate. I donate to one spot to make it easier for me.

I did thread up a few years back during pandemic and got a bit more than you but surprised how little they took and paid out. Right now they are getting mountains of clothes and seem pickier. I’ve gotten way more money at a local consignment shops or selling on FB marketplace.

Wowza! I haven’t sent in to ThreadUp as my brands weren’t on their list (or that’s how it used to be years ago) and I was skeptical about the financial return I’d get. Boy, I hope your other two packages do better.. $0 is nuts. I’m so sorry! Maybe a local consignment shop would be better for the new with tags?🤔 I think I’ll skip ThreadUp. I do a lot of thrifting. Unfortunately LulaRoe just sits around in the thrift store, it also doesn't sell well on Poshmark anymore. I know when it was at it's peak it was more sellable. Good luck on selling the rest of your items! I appreciate you sharing your experience. I recently donated a lot of clothes and felt that maybe I should have sent some of them to Thread Up, but maybe it's not worth the time and effort!

Wow. Thank you for sharing. Maybe you should see if there’s a local community sales page. Even if you sold the items for a few bucks each it would be better than Thred Up.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Thred Up. It reinforces the idea that their system is geared for them to profit only. Why get nothing from Thred Up when there are lots of larger size women in domestic violence shelters who flee with few or no clothes. Your lot of clothes and accessories would be welcomed and very much appreciated.

I heard from a friend that she was lucky to get like 1.00 per item. It's so discouraging. I'm shocked they didn't list some of your items, and also shocked at how low your cut was. It seems like you could have gotten more from donating them to Goodwill and writing it off on taxes ! Or a local consignment if you have one. Our consignments here are such a hassle, you can only bring in like 10 items at a time, make an appt, then be there at some exact time to get your check. We have a book store here that takes books.. but you could bring in a huge box of really nice, like new, trade paperback books that are current and they'd give you like 1.20 for the whole box. Then they sell them for like 7 or 8 dollars. It's a total rip off !!! At that point I would NEVER bring them books again on principle.

Your time is more valuable than dealing with thredup, imo. Seems like they low balled you but I've never done anything like that. So enjoyed seeing the babies play and sunbathe; it looks like a beautiful day! 🤗.

That was so disappointing .I’m so sorry that you made so little . Shoot have a yard sale ,if you sell everything for a dollar each you’ll make more money. Thanks so much Mira for sharing the Thread Up process. I hate doing yard sales as they are so much work and you don’t get much. I think a good purpose might be to donate to a women’s shelter or someplace that you know would make a difference for someone in need. I had considered doing what you did at one point and glad that you shared the process because it certainly isn’t fair for the amount of time and effort to sort, package and time to mail them.

Well, at least you know now. If there's a local consignment shop, I think you'd do better there. Otherwise, donate everything. A garage sale would drive you crazy. Friend, you are not alone. I over purchase clothes as well. I have found joy and a great sense of peace in donating things I no longer want or things I just shouldn’t have purchased in the first place. I have found a local thrift store that I enjoy donating to. I find it very rewarding to just “let it go”!!!!!

😮 I’m surprised with Threadup. I stopped putting up seasonal decor except Easter, Halloween/Fall and Christmas. Instead I put out my treasures I have collected over the years. This way I can enjoy them every day.

Mira, if you live in any sort of populated area, you could just offer your unwanted clothes free to good home. Around here we just group by size, then first to schedule is welcome to pick up bags from our porch. Thread Up is a scam, as you've found out. Good effort on your part as always, keep it up!

That seems like day light robbery 😮. The amount they take off the sale plus an admin fee! And I'm surprised they don't put all the new with tags stuff on sale. But I suppose it does get the stuff out of your house and saves you taking it to the donation centre. Little colt was loving the sunshine 🌞. I went outside to the garden yesterday and two of my kitties were out there and Eric was laying on his back and rolling around in the sun. They enjoy the warmer weather too. I can't wait for the days when I have my garden door open from when I get up to when I go to bed 😀.

I have sold a lot of items on Facebook marketplace and leave the items for porch pick up and people leave money in my mailbox. I have never had anyone not leave the money. I’ve sold hundreds of items this way.

Style Encore and Plato's Closet buy clothes from you upfront and pay you 30% of the price they put on each item. No waiting for things to sell to get a paltry 7% cut - the stores take a chance on items they think will sell and pay you cash for them. But they are quite picky, and you never know what inventory they're looking for at any given time. But it's worth a shot!

Wow Mira, Unless everything is million dollar items, they sure take a huge cut. I've seen on ebay where people "lot" or "bundle" like tshirts and sizes, same for leggings. I wouldn't know how to sell or ship on ebay or anywhere else but now we all know not to send anything to thread up. You took one for all of us and saved us all from sending them anything. Knowing they were donated was comforting tho. I admire you for trying and doing it and agree with you the least they could do is return $1.00 a sold item.

Same thing happened to me with Thread Up. Hits less work for me to donate to my local thrift stores. Money goes to local charities.

I was told by different people when I was preparing to move out of my family home to use these sort of used clothing businesses like Thread Up or Posh. My friend's daughter was doing pretty good buying or collecting used clothes from friends and family and reselling. But that all started to crash with COVID and has never recovered. Plus shipping got so more expensive and the amount of theft now is over the top, so everything has to be insured or just plan to write it off. I had all my moms stuff as she saved so much even from when she was a young woman (born in 1919) plus decades of my stuff, 99 percent pilled once neatly but now in degraded boxes and plastic bags in the attic. What a mess! What was in the finished basement apartment like area closets was eaten by mice as they love cardboard and especially natural materials. I found it more lucrative to call in local specialty shops for the antique clothing, accessories and jewelry and just donate my stuff more common place. And even there it was not easy to donate. They only want 'like new' pristine stuff, good brand names and won't pick up even big loads anymore. ( This is 36 miles from Boston so not out in the sticks, but still massive poverty now like everywhere). Even with the high end specialty, I was shocked to realize how hard it is to sell prestine vintage stuff and the low profit in general now for those selling. I probably had atleast ten grand worth of stuff, classic super expensive designer clothes, (my mom was a 'fashionista')...a massive amount and I was lucky to get 800 dollars and mostly for pocket books, fancy shoes and jewelry. And my mom was an average size. I think it really is the economy plus the over abundance now of everyone dumping things from having to downgrade and/or move. Kids are moving back home. Parents have to move in with kids. Or the younger gens not able to afford to move to more then a shoe box. 30+ year olds are still roomating it like college kids in my gen. It's crazy. I moved to semi rural NH and a condo starts at 300,000 plus crazy insane property tax and insurance, an apartment 2,000 per month. Utilities and groceries and a car are reaching the undoable level. So... Even thrift stores are struggling and charity shops overwhelmed with few volunteers especially since COVID. People are still spooked and isolating more. I see places like this closing in my area. A real big one just recently. What the big revelation in the end for me was....the 'hey days' from the 50's on with all this consumer buying has really put atleast this country in a very big pickle. Especially in the last decades of cheap China goods, and really when mass advertising exploded back to the 70's and 80's and we were introduced to all this 'disposable cash' for awhile. Regardless, it's really time now to release what we can but to also know all this 'stuff' that amuses us now, that we 'collect' is heading for landfills. People just don't have the cash or space for this anymore. Someone said it here correctly that value is based in what people are willing to pay and the kids these days with that 'disposable cash' (which is dwindling) moved on to tech, digital, virtual and their own generation of trends which is very different from even 20 years ago.... Things are changing very quickly. In the meantime these landfills which are already brimming over, are such a toxic hazzard now to everything. I got to see first hand how about 80 years of stuff, especially old plastics end up. They disintegrate into micro dust really. And all these micro plastics are in everything now, including us! Babies being born. Animals. What did we do, huh? Time to look into that, there are plenty of documentaries on You Tube and use this education as a mindful guardian over our spending practices now forward. And take it further with how things are made. Pick materials that are natural like wood, stone, clay, even glass... rather then these plastic alternatives...it would be a good start.

You can also send Threadup clothes in a box that you have at home. It just can’t weigh over a certain amount with the items in it. You might fit more in a box so then the processing fee would be worth it. You just have to be able to print off their label.

Whattttt! I am blown away by some of the things the didn't post for sale. And your payout was so little. I wouldn't find it worth it to give to them. I would probably post it on FB marketplace as one lot of cloths for a cheap price. I do like that they say they are responsible with what they don't take.

Your local shelter will normaly take these items for the homeless shelter...or even middle or high schools . That may give you a better purpose.

I have sold some clothes on Vinted before. My rule is that if it doesn’t sell for more than £3 in less than 6 months I just donate it. I'm not taking the hassle of shipping the parcel for less than that 😂

I suspect Thredup might work out better for you if you have designer stuff.

My experience too. So don't feel bad. Just donate to a a local thrift.

If it wasn't for the processing fee, I'd say it was still a good deal - thinking that the reason your cut was so low was because they have to account for shipping both ways and processing but including the 14.99 processing fee - might as well donate it next time.

Based on that data, I would maybe suggest listing leggings for $1/pair with a discount for someone who buys the entire lot. Assuming you have the bandwidth to post and schedule pickup, of course. Then if they don’t sell after a week or two, donate or clothing recycle?

I donate to our local store that gives the profits of the donations to our local hospital to improve it.

Thread up is a racket, I'd rather give clothes to a womans shelter or my Catholic charity. As far as leggings go the market is too saturated anywhere, people do not want printed leggings. My local thrift has a rack of Lularoe a mile long and everything is three dollars. My daughter is a full time Poshmark seller and she said they won't sell there. Stephanie Canada had a review on her channel of her Thread up experience and man did she get ripped off big time.
