If you lean back in the harness and push your hips up towards the sky at the same time pull down on the rope it's 100% easier because your not pulling all your weight . And pro tip if you tie the tag end off your Blake's hitch to the other like like a priussic it will pull the Blake's hitch for you.
Thanks for the split tail demo. I'm a young 65 and starting with a Blake's hitch and a split tail. I also have a Jet Step foot ascender. Today I cut a piece out of my climbing line to use for the tail. I also learned how to whip the ends I cat so they don't fray.
@@347firedude I'm doing strictly coconut trees. Gaffs and flipline up to the top, then i tie in and position with the blakes hitch along with flipline. Trim fronds, nuts and debris, then descend with the hitch. I'll lower half way down and have a ground crewmember swing me to the next close by tree if the trees are close together. I'm trimming 90 year old trees that have been gaff climbed for 4 generations of trimmers before me. Hawaii coconut trees seem to be pretty unfazed by all that poking. The crown is also pretty durable and slippery against the rope friction. The smoothness of the frond base "up high" keeps the rope happy when I'm lowering. My drama comes from foot long centipedes. As big around as your finger. They hiss at you and fight back...fun times ! All i use is a billhook machete, up high. Aloha !
Man I was out of breath watching ya,,, when I started I climbed with a Blake's hitch just with the rope no split tail. Then went to the split tail and for a while used that. Then discovered srt to get into the tree. Once at the tip I go to ddrt with a zig zag and love that combo. Quick access and great control on limb walks. Be safe. And great job. Thanks for sharing
It's so worth learning how to footlock. Once you get good it's a lot easier to set your line awsy from the trunk and skip body thrusting and cheating with a foot ascender.
Just needed the double blakes hitch to self tend.. I like all the other info, great safety tips.. i havent seen a clove/bowline terminating knot like that.. I know the yosemite
I am no expert, but I ask what would happen if you had some more tail and added a bridge and Blake's back above on the stationary side? it would pull up the Blake's on the working side so you wouldn't have to. slide the second Blake's up to assist in ascending, slide it down- loosen the bridge to descend normally
I climb on 4 wraps on Blake's. I went job corps and told me that the best way. If climbing on a pruiks or a eye in eye need 6 wraps if climbing. And buntline hitch. You had a crazy bowline knot. But you safe while time
the water bowline is a safer version of the bowline. it has 2 wraps on the tail and provides a better grip. only tme I use that knot in climbing is with a swivel snap. you cant side load it that way a regular biner will allow the knot to side load. that is a no go. a better knot would be a cinching type- anchor or fishermans style.
Good video am a climber I use the Blake’s hitch to climb every time I love it get a lil pulley to put under the Blake’s hitch and it will send it for you I use the knee ascender a long with the foot ascender and I put my climbing line closer to the trunk of the tree so I can put my flip line around the tree and you don’t have to hold yourself up so it almost like your spiking up a tree without the spikes hit me up I send you a video if your interested stay safe my friend
+JGBLADES the was an old video and mostly just just me goofing around. I very rarely ascend up on a blakes. Mostly SRT and double rope in the canopy now. Thanks for commenting !
I've tried to limb walking on srt......kinda sketchy. ddrt is the way to go. also. otherwise weighing close to 300 lbs when fully kitted out. I'll post some video on limb walking here soon
Also, when running srt, I'll leave a hand ascender on my rope with a micropulley and my rope going through it. Gives you the same 2:1 to make it easier to come back in. You do have to keep the end of the rope with you though, if you forget it, you're kind of screwed. Not that I've ever done that, LOL
I just started climbing. I attach my foot ascender to the rope coming out of the bottom of the Blake's. Practice low and slow. Get professional help is best.
dave lancaster thanks. I've actually went backwards with this. I learned on mechanical then to the Blake's. I am studying for an isa test. and it just gives me an extra tool to add to my arsenal.
Nick Figueroa start low and slow. Find a reputable tree company or climber to show you how to climb. Safety is paramount in this industry. Helmets are required. Learn knots and the in points. How friction works and how it hurts as well. Learn the different types of ropes and how the act. Get theatres climbers companion, knots at work and a book on tree biology.
