I love how Leia conforted Luke over the sadness of a man’s death who he scarcely knew-Meanwhile she was dealing with the death of her planet and her family, basically everyone she ever knew. And she seemed less fazed than Luke over her much more meaningful losses.

It's a flaw in the film, sadly. However, if you want to hear what Leia's reaction SHOULD have been, I highly recommend listening to the National Public Radio audiodrama version, released in 1980. In addition to that, because it comes in at 9hrs long, it has a great deal of expansion scenes that add additional clarification to the lore. Also, the 3 OT versions that were released were also considered canon until... well... Disney.

The reason Carrie closes her eyes when she shoots there is the Blaster is actually a bunch of bits and pieces stuck on a functional Sterling SMG that's firing blanks so they can paint the laser effects over them more easily. If you get the version Lucas hasn't screwed around with you can actually see the Blaster ejecting spent cartridges in that scene.

Watching in release order is in my opinion the best way for someone who never watched the Star Wars movies to view the movies. The originals are exceptionally good at introducing and connecting the viewer with the characters, their mission and the universe -- something I think the sequels are less good at. But the sequels become very really interesting movies once you're invested and connected with the original movies. In my opinion, the experience of watching the sequels becomes something different (and much better) if you watch the originals first.

24:47 That’s a MSE-6 repair droid, also known as a mouse droid. 27:15 This creature is called a dianoga. The one aboard the Death Star is Force sensitive, that’s why it attacked Luke. 28:30 The Force power Obi-wan is using to conceal himself, Force Persuasion, literally makes you invisible when you use it in video games. He doesn’t need a disguise. 34:02 You’ll notice that the pronunciations of names change based on who’s speaking in this franchise. 34:30 Lots of non-Jedi believe in the Force. General Dodonna is a badass, especially for a man his age, but he’s no Jedi. 37:00 Fun fact: Vader had more kills than any other pilot in the galaxy at this point in time. 41:12 Fans noticed that Chewie didn’t get a medal while this movie was still in theaters, it was a topic of conversation for quite a few years until they finally gave him one at the MTV movie awards in the early 1990s.

@zenhaelcero8481
@zenhaelcero8481 2 года назад
Han shooting first is an important character moment for him. It shows that he's willing to shoot his way out of a sticky situation, even if there is probably a non-violent option. He'll kill people if it means he doesn't have to deal with the consequences of his earlier actions. Then, throughout the movie he's thrust into various situations which require him to work with the more idealistic characters of the story, which ultimately results in his character growth moment at the end of the movie - he comes back to risk everything he's got in order to help Luke and the rebellion. My thought has always been that, by making Greedo shoot first (which some editions of the movie do, not all) that almost completely erases his character arc. And Greedo shooting at all is a pretty questionable idea, I think., given the nature of their conversation. No clue what George Lucas was thinking when he did that.

I believe this re-defined science fiction and set the bar at a new, higher level for future science fiction movies. Thanks for sharing your reaction. It was entertaining to watch someone that wasn't even born yet when this came out, react to this classic. Keep it up, it's only getting better. The next movie, the Empire Strikes Back, is generally considered one of the greatest movies every made...and also the best of all the star movies. I look forward to your reaction to that one next.

When I was a kid, I found the black-box VHS trilogy set buried in the back of our movie cabinet and immediately became a fan. My parents were 17 and 18 when this came out, wasn't really their thing at the time but they certainly found it interesting. At some point they were gifted a collector's box, so while I missed seeing it in theaters my first experiences were still prior to the "updated" version. I'd say that rudimentary or not, a lot of the original effects didn't even need as much polish as they were later given, because they didn't really age horribly. And ILM exists *because* of how much was done with so little. With the scale of it now, knowing this was just shy of an indie film yet still with such a modest budget compared to what it set out to do... I feel like the use of kit-bashing existing models based on real things to make such unique original designs for ships, or taking a mix of existing prop weapons and film studio scrap and spare parts to make lightsabers and blasters... All so creative. I think what got me the most about it was that it felt lived-in, in multiple ways. Things weren't perfect, polished, spotless, top-of-the-line. The Millennium Falcon was one of the coolest things but was considered old, junky, had visible flash scoring and open/missing panels.. Not to mention the Rebel ships. The fact that in-universe it's like a cross between a big rig or a tugboat, but also like a sleeper racer/classic moonshine runner, yet is a dang interstellar vehicle... It instantly translated the idea of futuristic stories set in space into something I could actually just see in the world around me, with dirt and wear and a long existing history behind it all that didn't feel so removed.

Sci fi was popular before star wars but most of the time movie studios didn't put much effort into them. 2001 in the late 60s was the only movie before this that put any good effort into a Sci fi movie. I like "Logan's Run" that came out just a couple years before, but it was set on a single planet filmed mostly in a mall. Most Sci fi was just sad in comparison the 10 years before star wars.

I was 8 when this came out in 1977. To me, it was perfect. The effects were new and mind bending, and the explosions were so good! :-) I am lucky enough to have a DVD copy of the theatrical release! No CGI. Han shot first. As a kid, I had no idea who Alec Guinness was... that he was a huge star who'd been in a ton of films. I didn't know Carrie Fisher was Hollywood royalty. All I knew was that this movie was literally beyond belief. Up until then, special effects weren't in the same class at all. This was next level, really, along with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Then came Tron and The Abyss. Then Terminator 2. Then Matrix. But I digress. :-) And please try to imagine that we all saw it on the widescreen in a dark room with strangers. We ingested the greatness together. Around 1984, I was in high school in Massachusetts. I was on the track team, and the coach was the astronomy teacher. The school had its own planetarium! I don't know how the coach got a copy of Star Wars on film, but we watched it up on the dome of the planetarium, sitting in seats that went all the way back.

The man in the C3PO suit also voiced the character. 3PO's lower right leg is actually silver, not gold. In universe, droids are believed to have psychological breakdowns unless their memories are wiped regularly. Artoo's erratic behavior (for a droid) stems from not undergoing memory wipes for much too long. As a result, 3PO does not renember the prequel movie events, but Artoo does. Luke says "prisoner transfer from cell block 1138." This references Lucas's first feature movie, THX1138.

at one point in the old canon it was held that droids fresh out of the box so to speak where to some degree intelligent but not truly sentient, you had to keep memory wiping them or as they accumulated experience and more complex programing would go nuts as they approached Sentience, if they survived and became truly sentient (at least in the Republic) they stopped being Property and became a no organic person under the Law. all that stopped when the Republic became the Empire

Fun fact: While it was far from Harrison Ford's first role, he'd sort of tried, but immediately got disinterested in acting for a few years at the time, but his various skills kept him around the industry. Ford was actually also a skilled carpenter and had worked on set construction, but his wit and personality kept drawing interest for more. I believe at the time of A New Hope he was most known for two things: his role in American Graffiti, and apparently his skill in building ingenious, hidden compartments to store "things" in and around hot tubs and pools, for big names in L.A. lol And it sounds like gossip but I think that is actually by his own admission. 😅😂

These are Imperial Stormtroopers, conscript soldiers recruited from across the Empire. The clones were in the prequel series, & are the cause of the Clone Wars referred to in this movie. They aged out of service, & are either all dead or old men by this time. You're watching the rerelease featuring CGI creatures added by Lucas. In the 70s, creatures were stop-motion animation (seen primarily in the next movie.) Stop-motion utilized posable clay puppets. Animation like gunfire was hand drawn. This film was produced as a one-off. There were no plans for Vader to be Luke's dad, hence Obiwan's explanation of how Vader murdered Luke's dad. The movie was released as Star Wars, which was publicly roasted by movie critics, since the movie shows two battles, not wars! The idea of a movie series was in George Lucas' mind, but he hadn't committed to it, yet. They had no idea if this film would do well enough to warrant a sequel. Episode IV: A New Hope was added in the rerelease. Obiwan's apparent death was meant to be mysterious. Every lightsaber battle resulted in cauterized wounds, not disintegrations. Vader was obviously confused. Did you notice how Vader's speech doesn't match his breathing? He has a mechanical respirator. The original Jabba was a human character. That scene didn't appear in the movie because Lucas wasn't happy with it. After Jabba the Hutt was reimagined as a slug species, the CGI Jabba was inserted over the human actor, & the sequence was restored. Vader is the Emperor's enforcer. In this movie, he's subordinate to Moff Tarkin, the governor. At this point, Vader is unaware he has a child. He eventually puts it together. The prequel series clarifies how he didn't know Luke was his son. The beast in the garbage disposal was probably someone's pet who escaped into the plumbing. Re: the stormtroopers' horrible aim: they were under orders to miss. Dead rebels can't lead anyone back to their hidden base!

i was 25 when A New Hope came out in 1977. In the opening shot, the Star Destroyer chasing Princess Leia's ship just seemed to go on and on and on. I still get that feeling when watching it today. I see you're watching a version with a lot of added CGI. The scene with Jabba the Hutt was deleted from the original theatrical release, but restored in one of the later DVD releases. Of course, by that time, we'd been introduced to the slug-like Jabba, so when the scene was added back in, they had to CGI him over the original human actor. That, in turn, created a problem when Han walks behind Jabba; his tail was in the way. So, they digitally manipulated things so that he actually seems to step on Jabba's tail, causing him to grunt. Wedge Antilles (Red 2) is played by Denis Lawson, the uncle of Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel films. Wedge survives the trench run, and appears in some of the other films, including 'The Rise of Skywalker'. By the way, Ewan McGregor's older brother Colin was in the RAF; his callsign was Obi-Two. I was 6 when it was released in theaters & after my parents saw it to make sure it was okay for my older brother & I, took us to see it. I was, of course, overwhelmed, but couldn't get enough of it. In today's (over)saturated media culture it's hard to really understand how revolutionary it was. Part of what made it such an event was that not only was it such a quantum leap in action & effects from prior films, but it touched some deep-seated needs in people that many didn't even REALIZE they needed. Films of the 70's up until that point were very cynical, which was a reflection of the cynical time we lived in. That, combined with the bleak materialism of the era, left people starving for stories with a deeper message of the ineffable and just as importantly, Heroes. For good or for Ill, Star Wars touched those needs, and was treasured like finding an Oasis in the Desert.

Okay I read some of the comments and I'm going to say the same thing. I was 10 in 1977 my cousin Jay and I stood in line for 6 hours to watch this movie. Then the next day we stood in line for 6 hours again. Watching younger generations see this for the first time sometimes blows me away and sometimes they just think it's silly. But your reaction was different. You said you'd seen the mandalorian end up with that with no context. But the Joy on your face and the intensity was as close to that I've seen two a 10-year-old sitting in the theater getting blown away by this movie. The amount of times that you said this is so cool was one 10th of the amount of time that I said this is so cool. I can't explain to you how amazing and mind-blowing Star wars was is a 10-year-old. And the whole journey is amazing there's so much in this universe to unpack. And I think you're on that journey. You have the empire next then return to the Jedi. The prequels which are okay but cool. That if you want to dive deep clone wars animated series then rebels animated series which leads into all of the characters of mandalorian and boba Fett. I'm excited to see you're excited. I just found your channel this is the first time I watched you and I can't wait to continue. They added some CGI since the original 1977 version. The Jabba the Hutt scene was filmed with a human actor standing in for Jabba but left out of the movie until they later had the technology to put it in with a CGI Jabba. So when Hans Solo said "your a wonderful human being" he was looking at a human actor. Also when he walked behind Jabba's back it created a problem that they had to play with Solo's position to suggest he climbed over Jabba's tail.

The plot of this movie is inspired by an old Japanese film called The Hidden Fortress. In that film a Japanese Princess is captured by an evil Warlord who wants to know the location of her hidden fortress. She sends two servants to escape and find a retired Samurai who can save her. So basically the Japanese princess is Leia, the Warlord is Darth Vader, then Samurai is Kenobi, the two servants are the droids and the hidden fortress is the Rebel Base.

Order of release is the best way to watch these movies. One thing you need to know is that, when a Jedi dies, he doesn't leaves a corpse, the corpse disapear and the "sipirit", the "conscience" becomes a part of of the Force (he becomes "one with the Force) and, if he hard learn it when he was alive, he can talk to people he uses to know whenhe was alive. That's why Obi can talk to Luke after Vader killed him. That"s what Obi meant when he said Vader "If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can imagine".

You'll never quite hear Vader get as absolutely pissed off as he is at the start of the movie. He's usually the poster villain for "tranquil fury." It remained an odd early discrepancy, but when they finally did address it much later, it was pretty well played. Once you see what directly preceeded that his being so demonstrably pissed makes perfect sense.

English people pronounce the name "Leia" as Lee-ah, whereas Americans pronounce it Lay-er. As it was written by an American it is technically Lay-er, it's just that the English actors, like Peter Cushing, pronounced it in their natural dialect. I really enjoyed your reaction; it was like seeing the movie for the first time again. I was 6 years old when A New Hope was first released in Australia, and it was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. I was so impacted by it that I still vividly remember that trip to the George Theatre in Brisbane to this day. I remember going in the theatre in the mid afternoon and being shocked to come out and find it was night. I loved the movie so much that it became my favourite movie ever since: all six parts, because they are really one, long movie. Thanks so much for returning me once again to my childhood.

In 1977, I saw "Star Wars" in the same ex-Cinerama theater that had screened "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), and would show "Alien" (1979). This "long, slow, non-DFX" movie was a revelation on the big screen at the time. These three SF/Fantasy/Horror movies would change the movie business in amazing ways, and make composer John Williams a movie soundtrack icon. 6:39 You are watching the George Lucre version that has digital effects not seen in the theatrical original. 15:39 The Jedi Mind Trick. 18:30 Jabba the Hutt didn't show up until "Rerturn of the Jedi" (1983) in the original trilogy. 31:35 The Jedi consider Death to be a quaint concept. 35:48 Now for some World War II-like space combat. 41:09 You noticed!;)

I saw this movie on its opening weekend in St. Ann, Missouri. My parents dropped me and my two best buds off at the movies - the line of people went around the movie house. A while later, an usher came out and cut off the line behind the person behind me - the theater had reached its maximum capacity. Back then, almost all movie houses had but one screen - they weren't the huge "multiplexes" we have today. There were also drive-in movie theaters all over the place - now just a handful around the country. When we all went to see the second Star Wars, the movie opened up as being "Episode V," and everybody was like "What in the hell?!"

The Binary Sunset shot from Star Wars: A New Hope is the greatest shot in cinema history. Its composition, context, soundtrack, and narrative placement make it truly moving in a way that no other single image before or since has been able to match. That’s a big claim, and while the obvious thing to do would be to list every other shot in cinema history and demonstrate how they all fall short of this crowning achievement, that would be time-consuming to the point of being prohibitive. It is much simpler to extoll the virtues of this greatest of all images and leave it at that. The shot in question happens about 25 and a half minutes into the film. Luke Skywalker has taken possession of R2 and 3PO and hopes that their presence on his family’s moisture farm (where water is pulled from the air and stored to later be sold) will be a step in the direction of the destiny he believes he possesses. However, Luke’s uncle tells him that he must stay on the farm for another entire year. This means that Luke’s hopes and dreams are on hold for the foreseeable future. The foreseeable future. If Luke truly knew what the future held for him, he would not feel so trapped by his present circumstances. Hearing the news that he is trapped on Tatooine for another year, Luke storms out of a meal with his family, marking the last time that they are seen onscreen, and goes outside to watch the setting suns. So. The composition. Luke climbs up a subterranean set of stairs to stand at the doorway of his family home. He then walks toward a slight rise to get a better view of the sunset. As he makes his way to the slight rise, he kicks at the ground in a universal gesture of frustration and hopelessness. Then he ascends the rise. As he arrives at the top of the embankment, the camera cuts from looking at what Luke sees to a reaction shot from the actor, Mark Hamill. (Hamill’s performance is beautifully subtle and will be discussed later.) The camera cuts back to an over-the-shoulder, the music swells as the suns go down, and the camera cuts back to Luke. The image of a person looking toward the horizon has been hardwired into humanity’s collective subconscious as a visual metaphor of the person looking toward the unknown future. The great irony of this is that Luke’s future is not before him, at the horizon, but his future is embodied by R2D2 and his message, which is currently running away in the opposite direction. However, the brilliance of this shot lies in the way the sequence is framed. Lucas puts his camera far enough away behind Luke that Luke is deliberately placed in the center of frame. He is exactly between his home and the suns, in between the ground and the sky. Lucas uses this frame to show that Luke is trapped on all sides between where he is and where he wants to be, and like the universal meaning of kicking at the earth in frustration, the meaning of this shot is also clear. Who amongst us has never felt that they are trapped between where they are and where they want to be? Is that not the human condition in a nutshell? Dreaming of a greater significance that seems absent while we deal with the mundanities of life as we know it? Putting Luke in center frame automatically makes him the most important figure in it. Cinematographers have known that technique for decades. The audience’s eye is drawn to what’s in the middle of the screen, so whatever is nearest the exact middle is the most important thing onscreen. This is more beautiful irony. The frame itself is calling Luke Skywalker the most important figure in its scope, and its scope contains a large section of the universe. Luke Skywalker is the Chosen One of this story, but he doesn’t know it. He thinks he’s completely irrelevant while the story is shouting that he is the central character. It is impossible to say how much of this George Lucas intended when he placed his camera on the day, but even if it was completely accidental, the beauty of this shot demonstrates George Lucas’ skill in composing a shot for the screen. Say what you will about the way he directs his actors or the way he writes dialogue, but you cannot deny that the man has a phenomenal ability to find and create beautiful images and to capture them on camera. So, the context. As stated previously, this shot happens about half an hour into the film’s 2-hour-and-four-minute runtime, which means that it’s about a quarter of the way into the film. For those of you playing along at home on your laminated diagram of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, the story is right about when the hero is offered his quest. We’ve seen his ordinary world, we’ve gotten to know him as a person, we’ve heard about his hopes and dreams and his fears and insecurities, we know what he cares about and what he takes for granted, and we’ve seen how he handles disappointment. As Yoda says in Empire Strikes Back, Luke is always looking toward the horizon, dreaming of the future. His mind is never focused on his present circumstances but is instead always thinking about the future. At this point in the film, we know that somehow Luke gets off this planet and that somehow it has to do with the two droids we’ve been following since the beginning of the film, but the movie hasn’t told us how yet. That’s because there are a couple of pieces of groundwork that need to be laid. First, he’s got to meet his mentor, and second, he needs to lose that which is holding him back and keeping him from going off on his grand adventure. That means R2 needs to escape and, unfortunately, Luke’s last (known) remaining family need to die. That’s the thing about mythic heroes; it’s hard on their families. But anyway, back to the context of the shot. We know about the Death Star, we know that it has the power to destroy an entire planet, but we haven’t seen it in action yet. From a narrative perspective, this gives the stakes somewhere to go. If the film opened with the Death Star destroying a planet, the stakes would be set too high too early, and the question would become, “Why hasn’t the Empire used it again since?” The stakes must grow along with Luke’s vendetta against the Empire. At first, he is only willing to help Obi-Wan get to Anchorhead or Mos Eisley to find passage off-world, but after his surrogate parents are murdered, he decides to join the old man on his quest to save the princess. The first threshold has been passed, the story pattern is holding, and we’re on our way for space fantasy adventure. Once he sees the Death Star, though, and witnesses Obi-Wan’s death at the hands of Darth Vader, he fully commits to the Rebel cause and becomes a declared enemy of the Empire. He begins to see that he could make a difference in the greater universe. He begins to understand elements of his destiny. But the only way to communicate the idea that Luke is understanding the destiny he’d been dreaming about is to show the audience Luke dreaming about that destiny earlier in the film. Hence Binary Sunset. The film implies that Luke has stood on this exact spot at this exact time and looked at those very suns his entire life. The film shows the audience that it’s not just a boy looking at a sunset; it’s a character dreaming about his destiny. It’s conveyed so clearly through nothing but performance, composition, staging, and music that there is no other possible interpretation. Luke Skywalker believes that his destiny is in the future among the stars, but he can’t quite get there. And then there’s the score. What can be said about John Williams’ score that hasn’t already? Other than “he stole a lot of it from Holst and a lot of earlier composers.” Well, ‘stole’ is a strong word. Williams stole his Star Wars score from The Planets and other works in the same way that Lucas stole the plot from Joseph Campbell. It’s not so much stolen as it is adopted and adapted. As for the music itself, I’m not your guy. I don’t know anything about music and my attempting to write about music is just going to be embarrassing for all of us, so I won’t. I mentioned Mark Hamill’s performance earlier, and what makes his performance so beautiful is the way Luke’s body language contrasts so perfectly with the music. In the big reaction shot, Luke looks to the horizon as if to ask, “Will I ever get out of here?” Then he looks down as if to say, “No. I’ll always be stuck here, between where I am and where I want to be.” But, almost despite his own self-doubt, Luke looks up again, as if saying, “But just maybe I can escape.” Finally, he looks down, surrendering to his fear that he will never achieve his destiny. All the while, the music is screaming at him to not lose hope. There is no piece of music, certainly no bit of film music, as emotionally evocative as Binary Sunset. It is, quite simply, the greatest piece of music ever written for a film. But the magic of the moment is in the contrast. The film and the story the film is telling (the syuzhet and the fabula for my Russian formalist readers) are both trying desperately to tell Luke how important he is, but he can’t quite hear them. He must go on his hero’s journey to discover his place in the universe.

As this scene was deleted, Jabba was mentioned in each movie (in this trilogy) but not shown, so in the making of the Return of the Jedi they had full freedom as to decide what Jabba's appearance would be. When that cene was filmed in 1976 or so, Jabba was a very fat human male.

The Stormtroopers are regular human soldiers like the rebels in both the Original and Sequel trilogies, the Clones are just as they are in the prequels. When you watch Revenge of the Sith I recommend you watch the Clone Wars, the Bad Batch, Rebels.
