Judith Marie was Maynard's Mom. she had a stroke and was confined to a nursing home for 10,000 days before she died. Jimmy and Judith could be considered companion's to Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days.
What I love about this album is Maynard coming to terms with the world around him, lyrically. In past albums it seemed to eat him up. Now he is examining why these things keep happening to mankind, and it shows in the improved depth of the writing.
@@ISavant I mean, the whole album is him coming to terms with his mothers failing health and eventual death. (10,000 days is supposedly how long she suffered, idk if true)
"Obituary Judith Marie “Judy” Garrison, 59, of Dover, and a former resident of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Jun. 18, 2003, of complications from a brain aneurysm suffered twenty-seven years ago. Born Nov. 22, 1943, in Bedford, she was a daughter of Harold and Marjorie Way Gridley of Dover. Judy was a graduate of Hudson High School. She was an executive secretary for the Western Reserve Telephone Co., a district manager for Stanley Home Products, and a homemaker. Judy attended church in Ravenna, and was a Christian through and through, living her faith. She was a member of the Tuscarawas County Brain Injury Support Group. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, James Maynard Keenan of Los Angeles, CA; a grandson, Devo; two sisters, Connie (George) Thompson of Carrollton, and Pamela Walling of Naples, FL; a brother, Brian Gridley of Dover; and several nieces and nephews."
I remember just being fresh in highschool when this album came out and listening to it for the first time on a stormy day, perplexed by how perfectly it felt in the moment. Wings for Marie 1 & 2 are chilling masterpieces.
this album contains some of my favourite lyrics in anything, ever. Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be the One Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending, To write it down for all the world to see. But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again ... Typical
also Judith Marie is Maynard's mother, who was quite religious, wings for Marie was kind of about how her devotion and faith should've been enough to get her into heaven while Maynard's fairly anti religious and couldn't understand her faith which a lot of the time says devotion isn't good enough. she was paralyzed when Maynard was a child for 27 years until her death. 27 years is approximately 10,000 days.
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head the first tool song I ever heard was schism, and my very first girlfriend said it reminded her of our relationship 🤣 We didn't last
Rosetta Stoned holds the crown as the most TOOL song in their discography. Super long two-part epic, odd times, unconventional composition and structure, humorous yet enlightening lyrical coverage, the song has it all but cranked to 11.
"Tool has the ability to make their tracks this restrained but there's so much power just simmering right underneath the surface" Great way to describe this album 🤌
Got into Tool with this one. Probably my favorite album ever and listen to it weekly. Many will say it's not as climactic and their absolute best compared to Lateralus, but it sure hits just as hard. I agree with you on how songs on this album just build up so very well. It's just a great, great album. If Lateralus was on the embracing of our spiritual journey in life, this was about the battle of man and questioning spirituality and the pitfalls of man's battle with itself in life. You can hear how painful and emotional it had to be working on Wings Pt. 1 and 2 with the theme wrapped around his mom's life. She had a brain aneurysm when he was still a kid (where the 10,000 days comes from as from that moment until her death was near 10,000 days) and that impacted his life. Right in Two is my all time favorite song lol. It's honestly hard not to get a little choked up with on it if you've ever felt upset at the world and how screwed up shit can be in society. Been listening to it a lot lately just hoping we find our way out of the mess we're in. A song that really speaks of the battle of self and our ego as does a lot of the album. Definitely on point calling it a duality. Fighting over land, over sea, over blood, over air. It's so damn powerful. Very thankful for this album and Tool. Really cool to see you reviewing this gem!
Thanks for your comment. I've been giving this album some deeper listenings since filming my reaction and it just gets better, I hear something new every time. A very powerful album for sure.
@@mollyesanborn I've been doing just this, with all of their albums, on and off for years now, and I STILL hear new things. They are one of those rare bands that I find I just don't get sick of. There's just so much going on.
@@mollyesanborn Welcome! Just getting better is right. In their music you still hear something new even after so many times of listening. I don't know where they're going after Fear Inoculum, but supposedly there could be more Tool in the future. Waiting on that and anticipating what the Deftones venture off into next. I know you have liked Korn so Adema might interest you with Jonathan's half brother Marky who sang for them. Lots of good 90s and 00s bands within that sphere of nu metal, prog rock, and hard rock. Saw Gojira with Slipknot. They are pretty epic too. So far you've posted a lot of good reviews for some solid bands. Definitely a lot more to get into and endless content to review which is cool!
I have this album in a loop on my car cd player for the past couple of weeks, so everywhere I go this music travels with me. Can't get enough of it, even though I had the album as long as it exists and have already listened to it a thousand times. Tool is for eternity.
there is a band called “Death” which is considered the first Death Metal band. The first few albums are very raw, then the latter half of albums are progressive and more melodic. The vocalist/guitarist/main songwriter is considered The Godfather of Death Metal. He passed away to cancer in 2001 at 34 years old. It would be interesting seeing you react to their discography and seeing their progression. For example: The first album has a song about zombies, and the last few albums have songs about the human mind and just overall very deep psychological stuff. Cheers!!
Congratulations for the punctual and precise analysis, as usual. I was lucky enough to see Tool and NIИ live in the same concert in 2007 in Bologna (Italy) during the 10,000 days tour, I can assure you that played live their songs are even more spectacular, it was one of the most beautiful concerts I have seen in my life.
The only time I've seen Nine Inch Nails live, was at Coachella 2005, with The Bauhaus, which was life-altering. I was one of many who collected nearly all of the halos, growing up. We're a special breed... The wretched, the wretched, the wretched....
10,000 days was the amount of time his mother was paralized. she had a stroke and when this album was released she had recently passed. wings were him letting go of his mother who he watched battle her handicap for 10,000 days.
Being here watching this magnificent reaction once again, you should add the review of their first EP Opiate, and the album between Aenima & Lateralus "Salival" for sure you wouldn't be dissapointed. 👌
My favorite blossoming metal head and reactor AND my favorite all time band......thank you!!!! The 10,000 days Wings for MArie is a tribute and the story of the life and death of his mother....he's bleeding his soul and sharing his most intimate moment with us....
I love the confused state of duality on this album. Its the point in a persons journey, after the despair of undertow, the search in Aenima, and finding of Lateralus, where those practices of self discovery are questioned. When we lose people in our lives, see the world continue to point the finger and fight each other, and still find ourselves in states of psychosis, that we find out that the game of life does not end upon reaching a state of clarity.
I was so looking fordward to you reacting to this album, one of the best in my opinion, some really well thought lyrics and music always on point, great reaction as always, thank you!
I agree with your assessment of "The Pot" If I had to hold the band to the fire, I would guess they would admit the bones of that song were written well before this album, but that they meshed it's core components into the feel of this album at it's later parts.
Hofmann is the chemist that discovered LSD. Taking LSD is a decent reason to blame him for having lost keys. The healthcare professionals are overheard by the patient who had been brought in to the hospital by others during depths of an LSD trip. The end of the track doctor asks "tell me everything..." and that leads into the patient trying to respond with the account of what happened while still tripping pretty hard. But gets more coherent toward the end as it wears off. If he hadn't forgotten his pen, we as humans could have gotten some universal translation system like the rosetta stone was for languages, but one that decodes the universe itself and what it's trying to tell us (or warn us, maybe).
I was actually thinking of you. I never was a big fan of Janes Addiction. I know a lot of artists love them. Like Trent Reznor, Henry Rollins, Marilyn Manson. I would love to get your opinion on their 1988 album Nothing’s Shocking. Thanks Molly
It feels weird because I don’t know why but on normal birthdays it’s all fun and all, but for some reason when I reached my 10,000th day of existence it felt like more of a big deal, because that’s pretty much the biggest landmark you can reach in terms of age you know once you cross that threshold there’s no 100,000 there’s no 1 million there’s just 10,000. obviously it doubles and triples but other than that that number for some reason means more to me. but anyway I had calculated that number from the day that I was born and already having been a tool fan decided to order the CD on eBay around that same time and started listening to it on repeat, it’s kind of a quirky little thing but I get something out of it and the CD is pretty awesome
Don't know if anyone knows but, if you play track 3 (Wings for Marie pt.1) 6,11 minutes, and track 11 (Viginti Tres) 5,03 minutes together 11,14 minutes same length as track 4 (10000 days) 11.14 minutes, together these 3 songs form 1 complete song.
You helped give me a new perspective on this album. First there is the loss, to deal with the loss there is the high, then there is the comedown after the high, after the comedown there is the reality of being split apart and lastly there is finding peace from fading away.
I feel like you'll really dig a full exploration of some of the early Nine Inch Nails works. The Downward Spiral is IMO their magnum opus, but Pretty Hate Machine would be another killer intro to NIN
One step ahead of you, I'm already completely obsessed! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5CVcgSmJyH4.html I appreciate the suggestion though, you're absolutely right about me digging their music. NIN is actually my favorite band, The Fragile is my favorite album of theirs but everything Trent Reznor does is pure gold in my opinion.
What a great record! The Pot and Vicarious are such good songs. Great review as always! I would love to see you react to Thornhill's 'The Dark Pool'. One of the best albums I have ever listened to. It shocked me the same way Loathe's 'I Let It In and It Took Everything' did.
I've heard some tracks off of that album already, I actually saw Thornhill live last month and they were awesome. I'll have to give the full album a listen now though!
Try not to think of the albums as individual songs , more like each song is a movement in a symphony. Each album is one long symphony. Most songs utilize the D minor Pentatonic scale, guitars tuned to "Dropped D" in two cases they tune down to B (B,E,A,D,G,B, Parabol, Parabola and Prison Sex)
Vigniniti Tres is part of a hidden track. Its 5:02 seconds long, Wings for Marie (pt 1) is 6:11. Wings for Marie (pt 2) is 11:13, and 5:02 + 6:11 = 11:13. You can play Vigninti Tres followed by Wings Part 1 in parallel with Wings Part 2 and they fit together perfectly.
She is so chill while listening to this. Like she smoked some northern lights before listening. Thumbs up and subbed. Also, +1 for the Brandon Sanderson on the bookshelf, I love that series.
I thought about you when I filmed this! Our conversation made me really want to hear A Perfect Circle, I'll try and get to 10,000 Days soon and then move on to Mer de Noms from there. I'm SO pumped to hear their music!
@@mollyesanborn I think you’re really going to enjoy Tool’s latest album. I also think A Perfect Circle’s Mer de Noms is going to be right up your alley too. NIN’s Danny Lohner plays bass on the album. I just saw him and A Perfect Circle’s lead guitarist/founder Billy Howerdel perform live(2 videos on my channel). BTW, some great Metal Shows coming up: ERRA/InventAnimate…The Devil Wears Prada/Stray From The Path…Miss May I/LANDMVRKS. Gonna be an awesome summer!
I know, I'm bummed I missed out on the Billy Howerdel performance, I'll have to check out your videos of it. And yeah, looks like a great lineup for upcoming shows! ERRA is one I'm definitely gonna have to go see.
It's crazy how high quality all Tools albums are that this album is my 4th favourite. And it's probably been mentioned, but A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step has to be added to your list. Maynard's other band.
The quality of their albums really is amazing, they're all so expertly crafted and layered so effectively. A Perfect Circle is absolutely on my list! Just gotta finish up Tool first, I'll try and get to Fear Inoculum soon.
When tool toured for this album, they would often open with Jambi. I'm still feeling the effects of residual awesomeness from a silent arena suddenly exploding with the light show and sound that Jambi starts with. I don't go to many concerts, but that was by far and away my favorite opening of any band ever live. This is my favorite Tool album, simply because I can either relate to, or find meaning in so many of the tracks. Now wait like 13 years and review Fear Innoculum because that was the split between the two ;) (Don't actually do this)
Definitely in my top 5 albums of all time. Lyrics are phenomenal and has amazing riffs such as the heavy and simplistic but addictive riff on Jambi or the more chaotic yet groovy-er riffs on Rosetta Stoned. Truly an amazing album.
Molly! You've gotta try out A Perfect Circle! Maynard James Keenan is the vocalizt for them as well and they have such a distinctive sound as well. Would love your reaction The 13th step is my favorite album in particular
probably my favorite Tool album, such a masterpiece. Wings for Marie is dedicated to my mother, that build up in Rosetta Stoned is the greatest in music history, Right in Two, pffft, this whole album is insane. Deserves many repeated listens to fully appreciate...well like most good albums.
Wings for Marie is dedicated to his mother, its such a sweet and sad song, if you have the time I highly recommend you research the story behind the song and hear it again, it will make you tear up for sure
Very cool reaction & I love your interpretations and seeing what you pick up. Can't wait for Fear Inoculum! My first listen was with the help of psychedelics so it'll be different than my experience but it'll be interesting. It's so hard to pick a favorite Tool record when they are all so different and have their own feeling/concepts so I usually lean on nostalgia. Looking forward to more videos! Thanks for all your hard work 😎
Like so many albums do, this one again brings back memories. I was in my first apartment, yadda yadda and so on, dating someone cool, who turned out not so cool by the end, but anyway, the album. So Tool has this way of doing this thing where they're not just simply playing notes; they're painting a picture with their music. They're taking you somewhere. They're channeling this sort of energy. To me, that's what makes them so special. Even despite how silly "Rosetta" might be, later on in the track there's still this fucking AWESOME tribal drum breakdown and it puts you in this certain place in your mind. I say this as someone who can attest to this as sober. Pun intended.
Hey Molly! New subscriber here! After watching this video, it's now my mission to watch all of your other Tool videos (along with the rest of your videos in general). I like your outlook on music and it's always great to see people experiencing music that's new to them but I've been listening to for years. 10,000 Days is my favorite Tool album, with Lateralus being second. I don't know if you've ever listened to them, but if you haven't, I'd be interested to hear your opinions on Pink Floyd's discography. In my opinion, Tool are to metal what Pink Floyd are to rock music. Hope you're well and I look forward to your future videos!
Thank you, so glad you're enjoying the channel! I hope you enjoy the rest of my Tool reactions. I still have Fear Inoculum left to listen to and then I plan on delving into A Perfect Circle, Maynard's side project that I'm so excited to hear! I'll also keep Pink Floyd in mind too, pretty sure I've heard a few of their songs but never a full album. Might make for some fun reactions! :D
Great album maybe favorite by Tool 🤔 Would love to see some Jinjer on the channel, specifically the albums Macro or Wallflowers, tho the latter is more of a harsh place to start.
Just found your channel, and seeing the bands you react to, you must check out Failure. FAILURE's "Fantastic Planet" is a Must! You've done Hum(a band of peers of Failure), you've done Deftness(a band that's influenced by Failure), and Tool(a band of peers, and having toured with Failure). Failure is a Must, also, check out their album, "The Heart is a Monster", and their last two albums(since reforming), "In the Future Your Body Will Be The Furthest Thing From Your Body", and even their newest album, "Wild Type Droid". Failure is just a fantastic band, you will be happy you've listened.
I've been a huge Tool fan for years now. I remember this album coming out when I was in high school and I listened to it on repeat for months. Years later and looking back I think there is an argument to be made that this album isn't by "Tool" but actually an by "Tool feat. Maynard from Puscifer". At times I can hear him singing and I can feel the same energy as what I get from Puscifer 's first album, which was released in 2008. It's as if, at times on the album, the version of Maynard who fronts Puscifer bleeds through. Would be very interested to hear you review Puscifer's debut album, V is for Vagina, to see if you also hear what I'm referring to. During your review here, you mention his singing is a bit different at times and I think he leans further into this style of singing when he moves on to Puscifer.
This album is a masterpiece. It was my introduction to tool. A friend had got the album and lent it to me, it was so hard to give back that he let me keep it. I ended up buying him a new copy for him self. Also I'm a huge Brandon Sanderson fan, how deep into his work are you?
Another amazing review Molly! You are so insightful... You picked up on the somberness in the letting go contained within the lyrics of Wings for Marie part 1.... Maynard wrote the song after the death of his mother after a long battle with cancer.
And relistens get better. If like me you start to hear the stories with each song. It starts to get exponentially more powerful. So glad you’re back on this with your perspective!
Yep, I can say this is very true. I've been re-listening to 10,000 Days since filming my reaction and it's gotten even better. Lyrically too I'm picking up on more, and its emotional aspect becomes a lot more clear.
@@mollyesanborn yeah, you caught the emotional journey of 10,000 Days/Wings before hearing the lyrics and knowing the backstory. Def comes through musically and anguish of the vocal delivery relistening. I find Rosetta Stoned nearly as sad. THAT one, is a lot to unpack! 😁
Loving all your album reactions especially korn and tool. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, it's beautiful, powerful, haunting and emotional. Maynard is arguably the greatest singer of all time. Keep up the great work.🤘😊
Something very cool about this album in particular is if you mix three songs in a specific order, they make up an entirely new song. I can't remember off the top of my head, but if you look up Tool Voltron song or Tool hidden track 10,000 days, there's an explanation. I tried it and it is an absolutely beautiful track
At 10:50 those funky sounding sounds are the guitarist doing things on the guitar mixed with his effects. He is great at making FX sounds and just cool sounding things:)
Album recommendations (No particular order) Opeth - Still Life Opeth - Damnation Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow Alice In Chains - Dirt Gojira - From Mars to Sirius Would love for you to react to these.
I'm kind of jealous of you listening to the album for the 1st time, takes me back to when it was released and the 1st time I heard it. As for every Tool album! Tool are a journey, clichéd but true. All their albums are brilliant works of art. You're only just peering into the rabbit hole that Tool create 😉 Keep on listening to them, they have a lot to offer. I'd definitely check out Puscifer next, you'll enjoy their albums. I've mentioned them before, but Opeth is another band that you definitely must check out. They're right up there with Tool. Great review again Molly. Cheers from Down Under 👍🇦🇺
