One was one of the first songs I tried to learn when I started playing bass, but I could never figure it out because there’s no freaking bass on this album. Some guys wanted me to go play it with them and I told them I didn’t know it and they said we’ll just play it with my volume at zero. I guess if Metallica did it I’m certainly nobody to complain.

Best thing you could have done is follow the Rhythm Guitar parts and hope nobody calls you out for it, supposedly Jason recorded his parts by himself and they came out similar to the Rhythm Guitar parts due to him doing that way in Flotsam and Jetsam and nobody in the band communicating with him to tell him to change it.

Fun fact: the guitar in to live is to die in 19:03 , is the last riff Cliff Burton wrote before his passing, and they never played that song live until around 2010 or 2015 (i don't remember the exact date)
@brunomunoz467

Also for some reason this is the last album fans consider the "True Metallica" but honestly next one (The Black Album) is also pretty good not gonna lie, the 3 that comes after that one, not much of a fan tho. But if you loved the slower, more sludgy sounding songs, you are going to enjoy next album a lot

@@mollyesanborn yeah no prob👍. Also i don't know if someone mentioned it but that 2nd voice you heard is probably Jason Newsted (the bassist that joined for this and next albums) and trust me, even tho he isn't Cliff, he is awesome too, you are totally going to see him shine on the next albums. Also he wrote blackened here.

@@brunomunoz467I think people brush aside the Black album because of the shift in writing style. It was definitely more assecible to more listeners. I thought it was great.. after that the slope became more slippery.. I still love Until It Sleeps..

That's mostly correct. It was played live for the first time *in its entirety* in December 2011 - however, shorter versions were played live several times before that.

Today’s the 37th anniversary of Cliff Burton’s death. He was the original Metallica bassist. This album is the first album with their new bassist, Jason Newsted. As part of his hazing, the band members completed muted all of his bass lines. You can find RU-vid videos with his bass lines in the album that’s entitled “And Justice For Jason.”
@jack_rabbit

the fact that they "hazed" him by fucking their own album over just shows what dysfunctional assholes they are. i'm thinking of lars and james, specifically. nobody is allowed to criticize lars' shitty thin tinny muted drum mix on every fucking album, but please do mute the bass ... the other half of the rhythm section. morons.

James' rhythm on the whole album is immense but especially on Frayed Ends. Riffs for days on this thing.
@jez_77
@jez_77 8 месяцев назад
Also this album is a highlight of Lars's drumming performance. Its well known that Blackened or Dyers Eve are on of his best ones, but people forget about Frayed Ends quite often. Probably because its slower and sounds bit less impressive for non-drummers, but the fills he does there are incredible, easily the most musically complicated and complex song that Metallica ever did (excluding maybe the instrumentals) and probably my favorite drumming-wise, knowing Lars's entire career its still hard to believe that he come up with it and played it

This album was released in 1988. The bass player Cliff Burton died in 1986. The band was in the depths of grief. James also talked of how the death of Cliff reopened wounds regards his mother's death when he was a youngster. Their most technical album. Kirk's solos are amazing on this album.

Such a masterpiece, and boy were they pissed off when they made this album, and rightly so. I don't care what anybody says about the mixing on this album, the chug and heaviness of those riffs - totally scooped - is MY THING!!! Also it was a statement: We've lost our bass-player, so there is no bass. I know that was rough for Jason, but he was put into an impossible situation when he joined them after the death of Cliff. Point: The chugginess of those riffs and that scooped, dry mix is what I still define as the ultimate Progressive Thrash sound! I just LOVE IT! Bass players: Follow the riffs of the guitars or go away... HAhahahahaa....

In my humble opinion this is Metallica’s best album. James’ voice is deeper and more abrasive fitting the lyrical themes of political corruption and paranoia found throughout the album, and the more vulnerable emotional damage explored on Dyers Eve. The music also is their most interesting and dynamic of their 80s albums, sacrificing some of the all out speed of earlier albums for parts that are slower or mid tempo in pace which just helps to enhance and intensify the more aggressive parts, and even though the songs for the most part are very long and don’t follow conventional song structures they’re never boring. The only minor gripe I have with this album is that the bass guitar is buried under everything, but even on their prior records that was always the case as well, it’s just more infamously noticeable here, but with music this great it almost doesn’t even matter.

Thanks for your reaction. My favorite album of all time. Listened to it thousands of times, great lyrics, mastery play, heaviness, power and fantastic solos. Everybody on its peak. All haters blame Jason on his bass play. Don't agree at all, in this case his playing along brings so much more heaviness into the songs. None of their later albums brought that perfection. My dream would listen to a concert with songs just of that album.

@@rome8180 Nope, that is incorrect. Jason himself stated in various interviews, that he was blamed having played along too much with the guitar. But hey good that you see greatness of Jasons play on this album.

This was the last classic Metallica album for me, after this they mellowed down almost into a different band. Some people loved it and they made a lot of money from it. The album is notorious for their being hardly any bass on it but that's what makes it the unique classic that it is!

@@mollyesanborn You will still get some *heaviness* in their upcoming work, but it's clear that they let producers and trends in for a stronger influence than those of us who love them for their *thrash* perfection would have wanted. That said, them trying on some grunge stylings here and there may interest you, for example. I also wanted to say that To Live Is to Die is a tribute to Cliff Burton, their bassist who tragically died prior to this. All the soaring and swelling and even music box sounds and such are very moving as a tribute to him.

A great album. I remember when it was released and a lot of people didn't like the sound of it. One reviewer said it sounded like it was recorded in a matchbox. It didn't have all the big boomy reverb and echo like previous albums. I really liked, and still really like, how it sounds. There's a serious lack of Jason's bass, but I've listened to the And Justice For Jason remix, and honesty I just prefer the original release. I mean, that's the way it came out back then. It sounds how it sounds. I almost think it was a blueprint for the nu-metal scene that came about in the 90's. Tight, in your face, sounds as opposed to big boomy concert hall sounds. Slayers South Of Heaven also came out in 1988 and is also awesome. People give Lars a hard time these days, but back when Justice came out he changed the game. I remember repeatedly watching the video for One, and the double kicks, and being in awe. All my friends were too

I know this might be an unusual suggestion but you need to check out Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor (aka "The New World Symphony"), and it definitely needs to be Leonard Bernstein's version from 1962 (the only one that got the tempo right). It's a classic and I think very entertaining for those accustomed to metal music.

Watch their official "One" video and it will give good context to that great song. That video was immaculately edited and produced. You'll definitely get a different perspective about the song while watching and listening as supposed to just listening to it. My favorite song on the album!

Fun Fact: 'One' is their very 1st video -and, imo, their best. Lars (the drummer) was just on the 'Smartless' podcast and had a bit of the history of it. Super interesting! Also, that video literally switched my musical taste from gangster rap to metal.

You should try listening to Living Sacrifice’s Reborn album. It is metalcore/groove metal. I think you would like it and they are so underrated.

Shout out to Jason!! 😅 Also just wondering if you are willing to react to a Pantera album? Great commentary!!

You NEED to start reacting to some Opeth. I’d recommend Still Life or Blackwater Park to start, but all their early records are incredible.

This album is in many ways a multi-faceted protest album. They cover topics from "climate change" with "Blackend", to dangers of capitalism, to injustice in law and politics, to pain and trauma of war, to the mistreatment of the mentally ill. Each song exploits and exposes another injustice in our world and protest against them. It's like a more modern day heavy metal version of a 60's protest album. Talking about the issues we face today. It's one of my favorites.

It's a masterclass in song writing, and probably the platinum standard for what Metal as a genre can produce.. buy boy is it mixed like dogsh*t. And you think that'd of been the end of bad Metallica mixing but they somehow toppled their efforts here with St. Anger and Death Magnetic. And I know how everyone talks about how they took Jason's bass out but honestly I find the drums harder to listen to than the lack of bass. Maybe that's because there is no bass that the drums sound extra dry but geez is it fatiguing. Excited to check out your reaction, it's a pinnacle effort in terms of musicianship.

Yeah there is no denying their talent as musicians listening to this record, I'd love to hear a version of the album that is mixed better and see how that compares.

While I agree there should have been more bass - I think the drum sound on this album is amazing. It's a major part of this album imo and what makes it a classic. I don't think this sound would've worked on any other album, tho.

@@UncleUncleRj for me it's hard to argue against the vision argument, this is what Lars wanted, apparently co-signed by James, it's their band, it's their decision. As a fan I respect that. Obviously the way Justice is mixed favors the clean tone of the guitars and some of the drum reverb (imo, it gives the album and excellent sense of drive at the cost of groove (again, imo). It's a definitive creative vision one that Jason even said should stand. What we got is the expressed intention and an artistic choice. I wholly respect that. And at the same time, I dislike it MIGHTLY. It's so dry, the drums and cymbals are so grainy and sandy that it ends up being all I hear in the reverb. I will take it however, all day every day over the nightmares that are St. Anger and Death Magnetic.

@@dasninjastix Ah. Well I also think the drums in St. Anger sound fine, the "Trash Can" snare never once bothered me... that being said, Death Magnetic is terribly mixed but I can't remember where it's available, spotify or Apple music (also Metallica website ofc) they have the completely remixed version - which sounds a million times better - uploaded to the service. I don't think it's labeled as remixed, it's just replaced the original and it sounds amazing.

Blackened and the Justice album was my intro to Metallica and heavy metal back in '89 as a g'n'r addled 14yr old. to this day i still think Hetfield's justice amp tone is the best ever. (even without Newsted filling in the bottom end;)

The Justice album is what I coin a “Grief Album”. It was written, performed and recorded in a way where three young men carried on business as usual immediately after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. However, as people process grief , it bleeds through their everyday routine in ways they cannot fully understand. That’s why this album stands out. It’s dark gritty, and very upset and balls to the wall. And it also cries unexpectedly as it does in To live is to Die, then they let out the pain in Dyers Eve. Justice is a very emotionally honest album. It’s a treasure

To me this is peak Metallica. Everyone goes OFF on this album, the drums, the guitars, the vocals! The big energy and thick intensity mix perfectly with smooth lighting fast riffs and vocals. Please check out Paranoid by Black Sabbath. You'll love it!
