My First Time Listening to Rage Against The Machine (Self-Titled) | My Reaction 

All sounds made by guitar, bass, & drums [the weird ones by guitarist Tom Morello]. You should watch him do it live, it's something to see.

Even the cover of this album has its story. It's not a montage, it's the actual picture of a buddhist monk self-immolating to protest the murder of buddhists in Vietnam. That picture won a Pulitzer.

The album is near perfect I don’t think that’s really debatable it’s one of those timeless 10/10 albums.

Maynard's vocals are on Know your Enemy. Wake Up is the song at the very end of the Matrix (I can see the DVD on your shelf so I know you've seen it). As far as their other albums go, Evil Empire and Battle of Los Angeles are equally as aggressive and icon. All 3 are amazing albums. Renegades is a cover album but has some really good tracks and some different interpretations of some classic songs

The mixing/mastering on this album is impeccable. Truly one of the best sounding rock albums ever. I would encourage you to listen to their song Darkness of Greed before you move on to their next album. That song only appeared on the soundtrack for the movie The Crow but it's from the same era as their 1st album and it's a great song that a lot of people don't know about. As you discovered, the band was mixing rap and rock together. The guitarist Tom Morello is essentially acting as a DJ and making all the weird sounds you're hearing. The bass player Tim Commerford is top notch and one of the few people on the planet who could incite a festival mosh pit with just his bass. Brad Wilk is a great drummer and he used to set up his kit backwards on stage so the crowd had a better view of him playing (and he would look into a mirror to see the crowd). Zack de la Rocha is a great MC and if you enjoy his work in RATM you should check out his more recent work with Run The Jewels ('Close Your Eyes And Count To F*ck' is a good place to start).

This album was a mix of Metal and Hip hop. One of the Best Albums I've ever listened to. There's no band like Rage against the machine.

This album literally changed the way I viewed rock. I remember hearing "freedom" for the first time and my 13 year old brain just being totally unable to process what I was hearing and becoming obssessed.. It remains in my top 20 songs of all time to this day. This album is a masterpiece.

'Killing in the name of' is one of those tracks where the crowd is going absolutely bonkers at concerts.

Hard, politically and socially conscious Funk. Zach is the voice of the revolution.

6:54 holy crap, I've never noticed this, but you're absolutely right!!! It really has The White Stripes gone metal written all over it... It's the guitar tone, paired with a "simple" but hard hitting drum beat and a catchy, repetitive guitar riff that completely fills out the sound of the song.

Ahead of its time and (sadly) relevant up to this day. Very unique stylewise, I cant think of too many bands who come close to their style. Absolute banger of an album, not just with its sound, but also with the topics it tackles.

The most political band of all time. When you look back on the lyrics it is really something to see how far ahead Zack was at the time. Timeless legends. All of them. Also, after Zack left the band the rest of the members went on to form the super group audioslave along side Chris Cornell from sound garden. You should check out their debut self titled next!

Fwiw, it's worth noting that this album really set the foundations for nu-metal. It's combination of funky grooviness, Zack de la Rocha's aggressive barks, raps and flows and Morello's sharp riffs and near-psychodelic guitar effects all really left the footprints for the bands to come in the late 90s and early 2000s. Can't wait for you to check out Battle of Los Angeles!

what I love about rage is everything they do is so consistent and done with so much emotion, belief, and conviction. the way the guitar sounds, the guitar tone, rhythm, sound of the snare and toms, lyrics, how the lyrics are said, composition, sound dynamics, etc... everything is done with a very singular, intense focus. there's no deviation, no confusion about what they want and who they are. unapologetic and unmistakable

Tom Morello has a wild story. Grew up in the Bronx, went to school with Adam Jones of Tool, graduated from Harvard, moved to LA where he hung out with the rest of Tool but he was so influenced by NYC Rap scene that he incorporated that sound into his guitar to create an incredibly original sound. Joined RAtM, then moved on and eventually played for Audioslave.

Rage are one of those bands where every album hits. You definitely won't be disappointed checking out the next three.

One of the best albums from the early to mid 90s (and there were a LOT). So unique, angry, and true. This came out when I was in college, and really struck a chord with us. The sad thing is this album still rings VERY true today. Class warfare, political injustice, racial injustice, everything is just as bad (if not worse) now as it was back then.

This came out when I was in college. I was very politically minded and latched onto it immediately when I heard it. I was into the riot grrl bands, the more politically minded punk bands, and hip-hop but I was a metal kid. Only thing really came close at the time for me was Rollins Band but RATM kept things more straight forward lyrically and musically. Edited, to include got suspended from programming playlists for awhile when I worked in radio because I cued up the uncensored version of 'Killing in the Name' before 10 pm. Not my fault wasn't clearly marked in the computer.

All those weird sounds are the awesomeness of Tom Morello's guitar 🤘 They were nu-metal before there was such a thing, led by one of the angriest and most passionate vocalists of my lifetime. I'm thrilled to see you covering RATM, who 'radicalized' a whole lot of us in the 90s💪 If you look more into them you'll see it's not an image, they are legit activists who believe everything they say and fight for. Revolutionaries in so many ways✊

The ending of "Know Your Enemy" is so powerful, goosebumps indeed. I like making my own playlists of favourite tracks from bands, mixed back-to-back. That one had to be the closer for my Rage list. Couldn't be anything else.

Lyrics are a MUST with Rage song reactions. I loved their music for 20 years, then when I started paying attention to the lyrics, I fell in love all over again. They’re going on tour next month, highly recommend catching a show if you can!

Such an iconic album. Wake Up definitely my favourite. That was Maynard's vocals on Know your Enemy. Considering you have The Matrix in your DVDs, I'm surprised you didn't recognise Wake Up as it drops as the credits roll. Personally I think they lost their way a bit on their 2nd album, but their 3rd feels like a proper evolution from this album.

An album that also features Maynard from tool on one track, and Stephen Perkins of Jane's addiction on the the same track I think, fantastic debut, still kicks 30 years later! I've always loved groove in music, I kind of can't stand them as people, except Zack, but I'll always love the music....

What is funny to me is you have "The Matrix" on the shelf to your right. Rage is at the ending of that movie where Keanu flies off after being in the phone booth. Song is called "Wake Up" which you reacted to in this video haha.

I love the 90s so much for all the crossovers of totally different music genres! Like in this case the hard, aggressive rock/metal mixed with rap and other elements, so good! I remember just buying this album without knowing anything about it(you could just do that in the 90s and almost every time you'd have gotten smth amazing) and was blown away by it! Every track is fantastic, with "Wake Up" being my favourite. Oh, and the "noises" or the instrument you wondered about in track 2 is just a normal electric guitar.

I'm seeing them live next month and would be perfectly happy if they played just this album front to back

Morello treated that guitar like a dj sample deck, including a kill switch and scratching it. All those mental sounds are him on guitar. completely unique approach, one of the greats.

HELL YEAH. I've loved your SOAD reactions so I was elated to see this pop up. Rage is one of my favorite bands, and probably always will be since their music is timeless thusfar (lyrically that's incredibly unfortunate). Wake Up, Know Your Enemy and recently Bullet in Your Head have been my favorites from the album, driving to this album is a riot (pun not intended).

Taking me back to so many memories of high school with these! I LOVED the "Evil Empire" album in high school, and "Battle for Los Angeles" album in college. My god, I wish these guys would reunite; I would be VERY interested in what they'd have to say lyrically these days.

RATM, one of the best political bands to ever do it, with a great mix of punk, metal, funk and hip hop. vocals are Zack De La Rocha, guitar is Tom Morello, bass is Tim Commerford, and drums are Brad Wilk. This is the band eveyone wanted to be. Enjoy.

One of the great debut albums of all time and I would argue an extremely important album as well. For me, without this album, we don't end up with SoaD. RATM and SoaD follow in the tradition of bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash (the only band in the world that matters!), making incredible music for political impact rather than mass consumer appeal ... and ending up pushing music in new directions. Love that you're familiar with a didgeridoo!! How cool...props from Australia!! Oh and you're a great speaker too. One of my fave all killer no filler albums of all time. They probs never reached the same heights as this album. Follow up albums had a bit of filler but some absolute killer tracks.

Another one of my favorites! I'll never forget blasting "Freedom" after HS graduation! Such a phenomenal mix of rock and hip hop, sung by a singer who, agree with him or not, is incredibly passionate and dedicated to what he's preaching! I love it!

The Absolute best band I’ve seen live, the crowd energy is like no other! Saw them at Rock The Bells back in 2007, Co headlined by Wu Tang!

A really interesting thing about this band is that it's all made with just guitar, drum and bass. No keyboards or sampling at all. Tom Morello is an incredibly innovative musician who found ways to make really interesting sounds with his guitar. I was absolutely obsessed with it when I started learning to play.

Rage Against the Machine instantly became my favourite band when I first heard them at the age of 14, and remained that way for a good couple of years. The first songs I learned how to play on guitar were Rage songs, and they were important in getting me to question authority and preconceived ideologies. All three of their albums are fantastic, filled with killer riffs, tight grooves and wise words and gripping deliveries from one of the greatest vocalists ever. I'd say Evil Empire is my favourite out of the three, I hope you enjoyed this first one enough to give that a listen 🤘

What a great album! Glad you got around to some RATM. This is my favorite from them. The Whammy pedal from Digitech is HUGE on this album. Tom Morello really pushed the boundaries on modern guitar with this album. Lots of new sounds for the time. The Digitech Whammy guitar pedal came out in 1989 and is a pitch bending effect for guitar that can go up two octave and down three octaves. (The first whammy only went down two octaves, I think). Tom Morello used the pedal for a lot of weird sounds on the album trying to emulate sounds that he heard around the city area and in hip hop music. Harmon (the company that Digitech operates out of) was sold to Cor-tek company (who makes Cort guitars) in 2022.

As completely fucking badass as this CD is, I think "Evil Empire" is just a little better. Didn't realize it at the time, but RATM's music probably played some part in making me the Leftist I ended up being. I started out being too enamored with just getting stoned and rocking out to the music, but if you really pay attention to the lyrics there's some really fucking powerful stories being told. Any time you hear them mention someone's name, Google it and it'll give some more context. If/when you react to it, looking forward to seeing your take on the song "Down Rodeo." In case you happen to read this, did you ever get around to watching "Manic?"

Rage was not really a nu-metal band, but was possibly one of the biggest influences on the genre. It was hip hop, but as a band. The guitarist was experimenting with using his guitar like a DJ would scratch a record, while the bass and drums held that precision groove. Decades later the three instrumentalists would join with MCs from Public Enemy and Cyprus Hill to make Prophets of Rage. In between, they would lean closer to rock when they joined with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden to make Audioslave. Crazy to think of the history this band has had.

You were getting goosebumps because you’ve clearly got a little Rage in you. I was lucky enough to see them live. Best concert I’ve ever been to. They opened with Guerrilla Radio. As the intro built I was lifted off my feet by the crowd swell and the second the song dropped it felt like a bomb went off. I had been standing there with a few people and I looked around and couldn’t see any of them anymore. No joke. Didn’t find them until the concert was over. Was a great night.

This album has excellent bass, never really listened until I added a subwoofer to my car. Now its on repeat.
