I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

The story I heard from this performance was that his mother and sister were in the audience listening to him for the first time in a concert situation so he was well motivated to turn in a great performance. His voice 'enveloped' you. His emotional expression always brings tears to my eyes. You're right. There are no words to express such beauty. He was a close friend of ours, a tragic loss. Bill Medley, his partner, you should also hear, and all Righteous Brothers songs. Bill remains a legend and is extremely loyal to Orange County musicians. I adore them.

What can one even say. Bobby Hatfield along with Bill Medley as The Righteous Brothers were a gold standard on to themselves. No autotune or a bank of electronic enhancement hidden behind the curtain ... simply a combined force of nature.

How many people can hit those high notes, male or female, without showing extreme effort? Bobby looks so relaxed as he hits those notes without any apparent real effort. He makes it looks so easy, although we all know it is anything but easy. His voice is so soft and calming, yet attention getting! Bobby Hatfield was a master vocalist, and owns this song!

Music from a time when there were no gimmicks, people dressed well and sang about love from their hearts and not about sex. When emotion meant something and you could definitely hear it in his voice. And live, no autotune like most artists use today. Check out their song “Heart and Soul”.

Sometimes I forget how old I am and how young everybody else is. When I first heard the Righteous Brothers when I was in college, unmarried, and 22 years old. It was 1965. Undoubtedly, you hadn't yet been born. I loved this and a whole lot of other songs from that era. So, that was 55 years ago. I guess myself and others my age kind of took it for granted that it was great. Watching the reactions to this music from people as young as you makes me realize it was more than that. It was timeless.
@TheLongtimelistener

Yes, completely agree. I was 19 in 1965, but feel very lucky that I experienced music from the mid-fifties through the seventies, a time of incredible performers and performances. I'm sure there is great music in every era, but that was certainly a golden age of popular music. I hope more people of the more recent generations go back and find all those classics.

Today's date is 2-7-21 and I live in Oklahoma, USA. I take it that you live in France. I have to say, this is one of the best reviews I've ever watched on You Tube. There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words and now it has to be said that your facial expressions is worth 10,000 words. You didn't have to say anything about the song because your face said it all. I'm much older than you but it is hard for me to believe that you have never heard this song before now because it is world wide famous even in today's music industry. Thank You for making this so enjoyable.

@@EricIrl Good Morning from Oklahoma. I just watched your review again and it still tickles me to watch the facial reactions to this song. I've always said that when I listen to this song it makes me want to ''ALMOST'' fall in love all over again. I would like to recommend another song for a review. It is considered a country/western song but fits into all the categories as far as I'm concerned. The song is ''I Must Be Doing Something Right'' by Billy Currington. Have a beautiful and safe day.
