A little update for you since I was so unsure in my reaction: since filming this video, I have become obsessed with Saturday Night Wrist and it’s probably one of my favorite Deftones albums so far. My top tracks at the moment are Beware, Rivière, Kimdracula, Xerces, Cherry Waves and Hole in the Earth.
YES!!! Same honestly. Ironically it's the album the band dislikes the most. There was a ton of conflict during the making of it. Actually what Hole In The Earth is kind of about. But it's such a beautiful weird album. 🤘🏼✌🏼
ayye that's awesome this album has a special place in my heart because hole in the earth was the very first deftones song, and i fell in love with the band after that, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it as well. keep up the amazing videos 🥰✌
15:49 “this album is definitely dealing with a division of something.” You’re absolutely right. The band was actually on the verge of splitting up during this album. This period is known as Deftones “dark days.” They were dealing with a lot of personal issues like divorces and just the stress in general of being in a touring band as well as just being sick of each other. You can hear the turmoil throughout it even on the softer tracks. This is a personal favorite of mine, though I can’t stand Pink Cellphone. Select Start is cool but I feel it doesn’t add much to the album. Every other song is incredible. Not their very best album, but it gets far too much hate imo.
Someone once stole this CD from me from my CD binder. I used to listen to this all the time when working out, I was upset but one day I found a $20 shoved into its sleeve. Apparently the quality of the album forced the thief into guilt.
U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start is an old video game cheat code, most notably for Contra. U for Up, D for Down, L for Left and R for Right on the directional pad.
The other singer in Mein is Serj Tankian from System of a Down. Another great band from the late 90s you should check out if you haven't already. Saturday Night Wrist is such a weird and beautiful album. The songs are much more heavy on ambiance evoking feeling than their other albums. I was wondering how you'd react to Pink Cellphone. Lol
@@MikeDunn19 SOAD became a parody of themselves after their second album and just tried to milk their own popularity rather than produce better music. Everything after Toxicity loses its novelty and therefore it's attraction.
I have been so excited for you to review this. I love this dark, depressing album. I feel like it is Deftones version of The Fragile. Cherry Waves is very special to me but I love the whole album bar pink cellphone lol. Listening to most songs on this album makes me feel like I'm in outer space and underwater; haunting, beautiful, sad, a bit of seething haha.
Big shoegaze influence on what is my favorite Deftones album. Kimdracula might also be their most underrated song in my estimation. Glad this is growing on you! Since you're a fan, I would definitely recommend a Team Sleep review next!
This is my favorite Deftones album, I love that it's more Melodic and it has an Outer Space sound. My friends and I were lucky enough to see them live right before Chi's accident at the 9:30 Club in D.C., it was my first concert and still to this day is the best show I've experienced.
This has become my favorite Deftones album by far. I love the haunting atmosphere of the album. Hole In The Earth and Rats!Rats!Rats! are the best songs in my opinion.
Def my fav Deftones album.... It's so atmospheric, tense, very diverse sonically, and dreamy.... And it was the start of a trilogy of albums that, for me, was their peak.....SNW, Diamond Eyes, and Koi. Crazy that a band can peak, at least in my opinion, on albums 5 6 and 7. Who even does that??
Cherry Waves is my personal fave deftones song and is in my top 5 of all time, ever made. It’s perfect in every possible way to me and in all honesty I kinda wanna play it at my wedding when I meet the right one.
Really cool to see someone hear this one for the first time after going through most of their discography. This was my intro album into Deftones and it holds a special place for me in that way but those songs are so haunting and I love how textured the sounds are on this one. It's definitely a grower of a record for sure
xasthur most popular stuff is a good example, dudes got some insanely gut wrenching screeches. production of those songs are objectively pretty shit tho lol
Used to have this album on heavy rotation, its just so damn good. Never got to share this with my friends but its great seeing people still enjoying it
So happy to see you reviewing another Deftones album! These are my favorite videos of yours. This also happens to be one of my favorite Deftones albums. Glad you liked it! Also lmao @ your reaction to "Pink Cellphone" ;D
Saturday Night Wrist and Self Titled are my two favourite Deftones albums, and are always the two that get ranked at the bottom of their discographies for some reason.
This album was what got me into Deftones, especially select start, that song tells such a dark and painful story even though there's no vocals... I'm glad you liked it Also you should really review diamond eyes, that whole album is like, pretty hate machine kind of story telling, it's incredible
On Riviere you said "like something is about to boil over" and then you cut to your smile when it does - legendary! I'm having so much fun watching someone experience these songs for the first time :) Can't wait for Diamond Eyes!
Good catch in "Hole in The Earth" relations within the band were at an all-time low during the recording of Saturday Night Wrist. Great reaction to the album.
my favourite style of deftones is when they have these huge-sounding songs that are a kind of landscape, wall-of-sound type of thing. and this one's full of them. especially love "kimdracula"
This is probably my most forgotten album. I remember having Pink Cellphone as my profile page song on MySpace back in about 2008 or whenever that was. For a background song to accompany people to visit checking out your profile a while, it was awesome. People would write me commenting about it and loving my taste in music. But I think I never really got into this album as I started to go out a lot more, become very social, and discovered my enjoyment for drinking finally haha. So it just got lost, and hell, I'm not even sure where I have this album now (yes, they're CDs...don't judge me!)
My favorite Deftones record for sure, seen them many times and have heard most of these songs live, they are awesome. love your reactions to all of the records so far, one to go enjoy!
Why that album sounds like that because the band was going through a bad time. They hardly recorded in the same room. There’s a fan documentary on it. Sadly this was their last full album with their bass player Chi Ching who sadly passed away in 2013. That’s why Diamond Eyes and koi yo Nokan sound the way it does.
I think in all of the discography of Deftones and listening to them forever and I gotta say to me Saturday Night Wrist will always be my personal all time favorite album of all time. I could hear it over and over and over it's a nonstop hit for me and in terms of metal/rock and Deftones as a whole in their chronological releases Also rip chi
That would be "Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right A B Select Start" The famed Konami code for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Konami was a game producer, and in many of their games released for that system, you could put that code into the controller at the start of a game and get a bunch of extra lives or infinite ammo or some bonus.
It's my favourite deftones album. They experimented so much here. It is such a expansive experience start to finish here. You need to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it all. But that said, I was really looking to your opinion on it Molly. Great review. We have different opinions but still awesome review.
Pink Cellphone is my favorite track by deftones. And i couldn't believe you compared it NIN's Me I'm Not. That happens to be my favorite track from Year Zero. Love your taste.
Great reaction btw. You should definitely check out chinos side project band Team Sleep. More of a shoegazy sound which shows another side of chino musically
Funny, just yesterday I was reading about that album and how it was such an influence for Deftones. The album cover is even similar to White Pony. I will have to give it a listen!
Hum's big hit song 'Stars' is the same exact chord progression as Deftones' Minerva. It's just in a different key and slowed down. Hum was definitely one of a kind and more influential than they are given credit.
Yay, I've been waiting for this! SNW is probably one of their best albums (certainly the strangest lol) and watching this video and reading what you wrote in the comment section makes me so happy, I'm so glad you liked it! You were right about the lyrical themes on this one: at the time Deftones were recording this Chino was heavy on drugs, the guys were rarely in the same room at the same time and their lifelong friendship was kinda falling apart. Hole in the Earth is specifically about this, about Chino's feelings on this whole situation, but I think the whole album has that kind of vibe, even when the lyrics are not specifically about the mess the band was going through. At the time, Chino was also working on the self titled record for one of his side projects, Team Sleep, and it would be so cool if you could react to that in the future, maybe after you're done with Deftones' records. It's so different and unique, it feels like Chino at maximum power ahahahah Well, now Diamond Eyes is the only one left, and I'm sure you'll love it! While SNW has a Koi No Yokan kind of vibe, Diamond Eyes is more similar to White Pony: it's simple, in your face, heavy and suuuuuper melodic, and I also feel like it's the most "positive" sounding record in all of Deftones' discography. There's less anger, less sadness, it's more about a romantic, almost hopeful sound (it also sounds veeeeeery sexual, but honestly that can be said about EVERY Deftones album lol). I can't wait for that reaction! ^^
Restrained is a perfect way to describe this album. It was definitely a strange listen for me the first time going through it, but it’s grown on me. The self titled album seemed really blown out and free wheeling where as this one was almost suffocating at times.
YES, those dark, depressive tones are so heavy even though this album is more restrained instrumentally than some of their others. One of the reasons I love it!
Have you ever heard of Red House Painters? It was an folk/rock band from the 90's and their retrospective album has a lot of good songs. Or their album rollercoaster is really appreciated with the critics and is a fan favorite. :)
Hole in the earth definitely brought me here to also just dig this album as well Love the chorus!!! Hope they drop a new album soon ohms was Dope too😤✨🏆🎸🤟🏾🤘🏾🔥✌🏾️👊🏾💯
This was the 2nd Deftones album I listened to (after White Pony). I ’ve always loved the dreamy, melancholic sounds. Looking back it does not hold up with some of the other albums as a whole but it still has some of my absolute favorite songs on it: Beware, Cherry Waves, Mein, Xerces, Combat, Kimdracula Fun album reaction Now I am curious about your thoughts to the System Of A Down album.
On my trip back home to Los Angeles in october 2020 to visit my dad for his birthday, i was getting really into Deftones during that time. Cherry Waves & Beware ALWAYS remind me of driving through Long Beach and LA. Every time i listen, it just takes me back now. Absolutely love those songs
I was really looking forward to this one. This went from one of my least favorites to my favorite. Mein grew on me immensely. Loves these vids keep it up!
Yes, it is pretty weird but somehow works really well. The tracks just get under your skin on this album but in a great way. I am so excited for Diamond Eyes!
Hey Molly I'm really enjoying your Deftones review. Looking forward to your Diamond eyes Review and finally your Deftones album tier list if you do one. Cheers from merry ol' England.
I couldn't help but laugh at your reaction to Pink Cellphone. 🤣 I think it's a good one but I don't like the last minute of the song at all. Lol...Combat has a very cool intro. My favorite tracks are Hole in the Earth, Beware, Riviere, Cherry Waves, and Combat. I have so many memories of listening to this album in 2012. I remember getting hooked on the album instantly.
Those are some of my favorites off snw as well. I actually oddly enjoy Pink Cellphone although I feel it doesn't exactly fit on the album, a weird track for sure!
When Deftones made the album the band was on the verge of breaking up. The majority of the band was involved in side projects, compounding it with friction with the other members in the band, they actually considered calling it a quits. The tension comes from that place and there's videos online about this, which really paint a better picture.
This is my personal fave of theirs...hails from New Zealand! Loved your Mr Bungle reaction as well...you definitely need to investigate FNM 'Angel Dust' and certainly look into Meshuggah...the new album Irremutable is an awesome intro which encapsulates all their eras
Wow, New Zealand! I'd love to visit sometime. And thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video. I'll definitely be doing an Angel Dust reaction, hopefully soon. And I've got Meshuggah on my list as well :)
@@mollyesanborn Deftones owe Meshuggah some props for the massive chugging riffs they use; also recommend French maestros Gojira and industrial legends Godflesh as well.
Ooh, nice recommendations! I've had Meshuggah and Godflesh both on my list for a while, I've gotta check them out soon. And I've heard Gojira, love their stuff! I actually did an album ranking video for them a while back on my channel if you're interested.
@@mollyesanborn There definitely is! This is the first album I ever listened to from them start to finish plus it was during a period of depression. It's also the last album that Chi the bassist recorded with them and during times of tension. They really combine heaviness and ambience like no other band, except maybe Tool. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to 10,000 Days by Tool if you haven't already. That one doesn't get as much love as Lateralus, but it's really good.
There's a melancholiness to SNW that I actually love, it has a very distinct tone to it that scratches a certain itch when you're in that mindset. And I'm very excited to hear 10,000 Days, can't wait to hear what Tool is going to deliver on that album!
@@mollyesanborn Love that about Deftones. Like the part where Chino sings "this is the end" in Hole in the Earth. It's melancholic but without a feeling of deep sadness. Like this is the end, but we're gonna be okay. Xerces the one you really liked, the chorus starting with that strong "Goodbye" and then eases up. They're just one of those bands that know how to create a wall of sound that is both ambient and heavy at the same time. It's pretty amazing. Maynard wrote and sung about some really personal things on 10,000 Days. Named it 10,000 days because of the 27 years his mother Judith had lived after she suffered a life altering stroke when he was young. The theme of that album seems to be directed at personal and spiritual conflict. Jambi, both parts of Wings for Marie, and Right in Two really get into that. Just as amazing as Lateralus in its own right. I first got into Tool through that album so it holds a special place :). Really good bands and albums to react to.
Aw thank you, glad you're enjoying the videos! I'll certainly consider a Saturday Night Wrist demos reaction, that would be very interesting to listen to.
@@mollyesanborn one time I dropped the Pink Cellphone outro at a nightclub in Las Vegas during an all vinyl set about a decade ago and the entire crowd was like "WTH?!" It was hilarious.
Hey Molly, I know you like really interesting and varied bands, I thought I would suggest Steely Dan, and check out either “The Royal Scam” or “Aja”. Both of those albums are fantastic and they are not the typical metal fair you showcase on your channel, but are really worth a listen. Coming from a huge Metal guy it might broaden your horizons like it did for me! Keep up the good work and do what you do. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
BTW, the UUDDLR....track translates to up up down down left right left right A B select start which I believe references a game code from a 1990s gaming console for perhaps endless lives.
Alright the SNW review and Molly you didn't disappoint in the slightest!!! You definitely picked up on the darkness and division in the themes of this LP, as some have stated in the comments, Chino was battling drug & alcohol addiction while also going through a divorce during this period. He decided to pick up rhythm guitar which angered (guitarist) Stephen Carpenter. Chino plays rhythm guitar on Hole in the Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start, Xerces and "Rivière. Fun fact: Chino plays lead guitar on U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start while Stephen plays the drums. Their label forced them to record SNW because the sales for [Self Titled] were low. The band made demos which have never seen the light of day, but have been called "evil" by the band. After not getting who they wanted for producer on this album they settled for Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd). Chino & Ezrin did not get along so the vocals were recorded separately by friend of the band Shaun Lopez from Far. The female singer on Pink Cellphone is Annie Hardy from Giant Drag, a hyper sexual indie rock duo from the mid 00's. I love this album, I remember the wait for it seeming like forever and it came out just as I went to film school. I was over worked and feeling isolated so when this came out it was like a good friend from home coming to visit. I'd walk around L.A. at night listening to SNW on my earbuds and even though it's a dark album it made me feel happy & inspired. Thank you sooooo much for your continued Deftones coverage. I wish you all the best and please, please, PLEASE do Weezer and System of a Down. Many of the bands you enjoy were inspired by them (I'll even recommend The Pixies too if you haven't heard them either). P.S. "U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start" is pronounced Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Select, Start it's called the "Konami Code". Back in the day if you put that code in using your controller at the beginning of any Konami video game you would get unlimited lives.
Pink Cellphone always makes me laugh, my brother and little sister and I rented a vacation condo in Florida like 20 years ago and we found a pink Motorola flip phone stuck in the couch, we charged it up and holy cow the pictures and videos on that phone.... seriously, put a solid password on your phone ladies and gentlemen if you plan to use your phone as your personal porn recorder.
Ha, I felt obligated to warn about you how weird Pink Cellphone is on one of your other videos! Glad you liked the album though, it's a unique one - definitely their most "outer space" album. When the drums kick in on Riviere is a top 5 stunning Deftones moment IMO, the tone Chino's voice hits is absolutely haunting.
I think I remember your Pink Cellphone comment, haha! Definitely a weird track. I also picked up on those space themes you're talking about, not only with the lyrics but just the sound of this album has that outer-spacey feeling to its tone. Riviere is definitely one of, if not their most underrated track imo, chillingly gorgeous.
