Give Me One Reason is a great track from her album in the mid 90s. There’s a good version where she performed it with Eric Clapton. The Promise is another fantastic song from that album, but I don’t think it was ever released as a single. It’s worth listening to if you check out more from Tracy. She’s incredibly talented.

This song was HUGE in the summer of 1988. I remember because I left my friend’s Tracy Chapman cassette tape on the dash of my car while I was at the beach and it melted. I had to take some of my graduation cash and head to Musicland at the mall to buy her a new one.

I'm having so much fun watching young black men and women discovering this song. I'm 60 and was a young gay woman when Tracy Chapman became famous. She was SO important to me and my friends. This song is amazing. Try also "Talkin Bout A Revolution". She is amazing. Also, she had a long-term relationship with Alice Walker, who wrote The Color Purple. Two amazing black women! Doing their part to change the world for the better.

When I lived in Jamaica Plain, outside Boston in the 1980's I went to a concert at a church. There were about 30 of use there and Tracy was unknown at the time and the singer. She played 'Fast Car' and so many other beautiful songs. She was busking in the subway in Cambridge, MA at the time time and I wasn't surprised when she made it big a year or so later. Thanks for playing this and being open to listening to music you are unfamiliar with. You and your brothers are great.

She is a very powerful singer/songwriter and IMO one of the most underrated of my generation. Every single song on that debut album is great. A few of the standouts are 'Talkin' bout a Revolution', 'Mountains o' Things', and "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight'. Her album 'New Beginning' is stacked with songs as well. 'Cold Feet', 'At This Point In My Life', 'Heaven's Here On Earth', and 'Smoke and Ashes' are some of my favorites.

Tracy knows the other side of the American dream. Folk music at its best.

Listened to this album on a loop at the Berkeley flea market. Heard it hundreds of times. Still so great.
