Amon Goeth was actually way worse in life, but when making the film they felt audiences wouldn’t believe he was realistic because of the level of brutality. Also, holocaust survivors saw Ralph Phinnes on set dressed as Amon and were too afraid to go near him because embodied him so well.

As you realized later on, Schindler began as a war profiteer, he only wanted to work with jews because they were the cheapest possible workers (pretty much slave workers). Before that, he worked as an officer of the german intelligence agency, and helped with the invasion of Czech and Poland (which explains his high status with the nazis officers. To them, he was one of them). It's only after witnessing the horrors of the nazis that he decided to shelter his workers and try to save them. 14:40 Schindler is (during the whole movie) wearing a gold pin of the nazi party, a pin that was only given to the elite of the party. That's why the 2 men were so quick to help him get Stern after that little threat, a man with that pin definitely had enough influence to get them sent to the eastern front. 17:20 This scene with the building engineer is in the movie to show how nazis wanted to eradicate educated jews, especially those who dared to talk back. In real life, it didn't happen like that for that engineer though. She knew better than to talk to Goeth. So she kept silent. When part of a building collapsed, the german supervisor of the construction put all the blame on her, and executed her as a scapegoat. Sadly, she didn't die from a bullet to the head, her death was much, much more gruesome, according to survivors... She was whipped to death, then they shot her corpse for good measure... 25:05 Goeth regularly "shot people for fun" from his balcony, as shown here. In fact, they toned down his cruelty for the movie, as they were afraid he would look too cartoonishly evil to the audience. The guy was much worse in real life, sadly. One of his maids said he almost couldn't go from lunch to dinner without killing someone. As for his mistress being fine with such a man, she was fully fine with it. Even after the war, she kept glorifying him all the way until she died in the 70s or 80s. 33:50 This is a part that was invented for the novel/movie. In real life, Goeth never lusted after his 2 maids (he had 2 in real life). He regularly beat them up though, often ordering them to get naked first. But he never touched them sexually. 45:00 They didn't kill them in the showers because Schindler's workers were in good condition. They needed some jews who could do manual labor around the camp. And once you were so malnurished you couldn't do that anymore, you would go to the "other" shower room. 46:35 It took 3 weeks to get the women out of Auschwitz. Nobody knows how Schindler did it (it must have been either blackmail or TONS of money). But to get his workers back, they had to call them by name from his list. Most people don't get the significance of that, but this is Auschwitz. A place where people were not names, but a tattoo number. Survivors of the camp have said this was the only time prisoners were called by name in Auschwitz. So to get his workers back, Schindler had to get the officers of the camp to break the rule of the camp... 47:53 "why are they taking the kids": That's just the goal of the nazis. If you want to eradicate the jews, then eradicate the next generation first. (also, they considered kids couldn't work, so they had no use)

As a lot have said, he started just to make money. When he sees the girl in red, though, that's the moment he sees the true horror of what's happening. I always saw her red symbolizing his realization of the blood on his hands. You can see the look shift in his eyes throughout that scene, and as he turns, he's realized he has to do something to help. Then, when he gets them out of the camp, that's the first decision of his that isnt driven by profit. From there on, everything he does is to save more people. It's a horribly beautiful film. It's tough and brutal, but it's one everyone needs to see at least once start to finish.

There is a biracial German woman, the daughter of a German woman and Nigerian man. Her unmarried mother put her in an orphanage when she was weeks old. She had regular contact with her mother and grandmother in early childhood, even after she was placed with foster parents. That until her foster parents adopted her at age 7. After high school she went to work in France where she became friends with an Israeli woman. When her friend returned to Israel she was invited to visit She decided that would go to Israel. While there met a man and fell in love. Eventually she studied and worked there several years and even learned Hebrew. She returned to Germany after the relationship ended. Fortunately she met another man who was to be her husband. Married with two kids she had a routine. One part of it was after bringing the kids to school was a visit to the library. The reality of her life changed on one library visit when a random book caught her eye. It was about a woman whose father was a Nazi war criminal. A picture on the cover looked familiar , as she scanned thought the pages looking at various photos , she recognized the faces of biological mother and grandmother. At the age of 38 she understood that her Grandfather was Amon Gothe.

Great reaction man. A lot of the reason schindler was scared to show compassion for the jewish people earlier in the movie was because it was against the law to have compassion towards jewish people, and the punishment was prison or death.

Sympathy is more -- I see where you're at, where you're coming from. Empathy is the harder, more elevated version where you can say "I actually feel this." So sympathy is diet, whereas empathy is the OG heavy calorie sugar coca cola.
