This was recorded on a GoPro Hero6 at the Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle Washington in a dive tank made for the underwater welding and burning course.
No, I'm not an "underwater welder", welding underwater is just a skill that every commercial diver learns going through school.

Believe it or not, about five years ago i was working a very similar job as in the video. It was a part time job with a scuba team in Santa Monica, CA. We basically go under, and have a boat help drop steel piping to the ocean floor that was used for plumbing, then they would have the underwater welders come in and weld the 16ft pipes together. I'll never forget what happened the day as I went below at 160ft to remind one of the welders to check the levels on his oxygen tank... I saw a shark around 6ft long right next to the guy! Right beside him! I was terrified for a minute. It appeared that he wasnt hurt so I got a little closer only to notice that the shark was actually helping him weld! I could not believe my eyes. And by the way I made this entire story up.

So how do you ground the metal underwater and not get electrocuted?
@Freehotdawgs
@Freehotdawgs 5 лет назад
You have to run the welder opposite from topside so the positive is ground. That way the flow of current is moving away from you. Also you need to be wearing rubber gloves to help insulate your hands. Clamping the ground as close to the welding location as possible is also important.
@texasblaze1016

@@Freehotdawgs ive been going to school for shielded metal arc welding and from what i understand, the air gap between the electrode and your work creats the high resistance needed to generate heat of 6°K-10°K F for welding. So if you are welding in water which has low resistance especially in salt water, how does that work??? Its probably not something you have to know but an explanation would be interesting

@ratpoutine

John Pike because the path of least resistance is from the electrode through the tiny bit of water to the base metal and then to the grounding clamp compared to going through a shit ton of water the electricity chooses the path of least resistance going through the metal

Actually underwater welding is about as low risks as welding on land as far as electrocution goes. Electric shock from underwater welding is very rare. The key is to use DC only current. The real risks for the welders is underwater gas explosions, hypothermia, the bends and drowning due to scuba gear failure. It’s about a 15% fatality rate. Pretty dangerous but no the way you would think.

I went to school for underwater welding..see those tiny fizzy bubbles when hes welding? Hydrogen and oxygen. Had a co worker killed by those. Typically. You rock the rod to break the flux as the rod consumes. We used to dunk rods in bees wax to keep moisture out as u practiced. The rods on the the job have a plastic like coating that burns away as u go. Made good money but so dangerous! These welds looked great for someone just starting. Nice job!

What other fluids can one theoretically weld in? Gasoline? (no oxidizer, just crappy hydrogen to permeate the metal, and soot)

Just think about how much drama is down in that water while welding. Having peace and quiet to To yourself. Once the hood drops the bullshit stops

Apart from the failed side, it actually welds better than air welding. From now I will replace argon with water. (I’m pretty sure you failed the second side because there was too much bubbles and you couldn’t see a shit of what you were doing)
@abovelunar3488
@abovelunar3488 4 года назад
The bubbles coming off the rod are from the electricity splitting the water into pure oxygen and hydrogen, neat

FFS where's the money shot? All this mouth breathing and scummy water and I dont even get to see the joint being welded as the camera is too far down. Then you cut the money shot out of the video. WTF Have some decency man.

I’m going to assume this is safe because this is a special torch used only for underwater welding and the current doesn’t have enough power to jump through the water to shock you?

Welders need to have "golden hand" to weld underwater, just look at that weld quality. So hard to maintain.

Must be a weird feeling considering a big full of thumb is to never weld while wet or in a puddle now you’re submerged in that puddle and welding.

Will Fishing wow, your stupid. I’m a union pipe fitter and I know plenty of my brothers who have died. So don’t be disrespectful. You can’t fall and die under water and that’s one of the leading deaths in ALL construction. Not to mention refinery deaths and plenty of other causes. Just had a welder less than 2 weeks ago die from h2s at marathon refinery. So google that and have some respect for the men who work and put their life on the line for people. Clearly your not in the industry or you wouldn’t speak like that.

I still dont understand how the current doesn't travel through the water from the electrode to the ground, is it just salt water that current flows through?
