You are definately on the right track and I think you're going to do "very" well. I'm retired, single, no children. But I'm a huge proponent of home schooling. The brightest, most well rounded, best adjusted kids I've known were home schooled. I've known of amazing networks of HS families. There is so much love, caring, support and deep friendship in these families. How can it be any better? Richest blessings to you and your family!! 🥰🌿♥️

Children have been learning at the Hip & Elbow of Parents for ages, most often the essential basics of daily life. Seeing "life" modeled by the people closest to them shows them how to be a Grown-Up including the nuances of interpersonal exchanges to resolve challenges. Bravo for your dedication to raising well-rounded Humans!!

I love following homesteaders. I alwasy wondered why somone would chose to homestead in one of the hardest places in the world, The desert? Why? I hope it all works out for you, Homesteading and homeschooling. . I know its doable. We are going on our fourth year of homeschooling our two boys.

Great question! For us so many reasons. 1) to be close to family 2) our piece of land was actually past down to us by family 3) this allowed us to become debt free 4) it’s really beautiful out here And many more. Not to say there isn’t a big learning curve to desert homesteading. The desert definitely plays by different rules than other parts of this big beautiful world!

The Pilgrim's way has a good selection of books on home schooling, they are a Christians homeschooling supply store and has a nice online store.

I very much like your approach. I was a qualified teacher and spent several years advising homeschoolers and tutoring high school math and science when the parents weren't comfortable with those subjects. One of the biggest things everyone noticed was how much time is wasted at school. It took only 2-3 hours a day to do all the schoolwork and then the children could spend the rest of the day learning practical things by helping the parents: cooking, building, gardening etc. or practising shooting hoops for hours or studying local flora and fauna or whatever. Healthy children are supposed to be bouncing around all day long, not stuck in a chair, and when you go at the child's own pace (as you seem to be doing) they become entranced with learning and that stays with them for life. One suggestion: for Geography get a good globe and whenever a place is mentioned ( e.g. Cousin Susie is going to Disneyland next week) together you go find it on the globe. It changes the way they understand the world and distances in a way that flat maps cannot achieve. Teach mapreading early and have them follow the map when you drive places. Be careful of some of the "Christian" curricula - make sure they aren't indoctrinating without allowing for critical thinking. You seem to have good judgement around that. Thanks for your videos, they are always interesting.

Great video! We’re on our first year of homeschool also. Also in Arizona. Totally felt the soul crush with my 10 year old son. He is just an active learner. We spend maybe 20 -30 mins on a subject and done. We already see improvement. He also does Soccer 😊 really resonated with your reasoning for doing homeschooling. Anyway thanks for the video. Have a great day!!

I applaud your reasons for homeschooling. It is well thought out and you have some good points. I homeschooled my 3 kids in the 80s and 90s. They went to public schools for a year or two. What I noticed was that the schools tended to focus more at what the children were not good at more than what they were good at and I was concerned that it would do damage to my kid's confidence. My daughter was an early reader but was not good in math. She was a sensitive child and I could see that school could have crushed her spirit. My son was good in math but took a few years to master reading. He had time being at home to learn at his own pace and picked up reading when he was ready. There were so many other reasons. But, it was a wonderful time for us and I am still glad I was able to do it. I also used Math U See so it’s good to know it’s still around. I thought it was a great curriculum. Good luck on your journey. It will change and evolve but it is well worth it.

The manipulatives are great to teach with all the way through high school. Makes the concepts really clear.
