MY FIRST YEAR UBC SCIENCE GRADES
Heyo!
I've wanted to film this video since the beginning of first term, regardless of what the outcome was. Grades are never something I openly shared in high school, or really in my first year to be honest... so this is a big step. I just felt like I should share this because I know when I was starting university, I had a fair bit of anxiety surrounding what would happen to my grades. I knew they would go down but the question was by how much. I know that everyone has different goals, but regardless, I thought I'd share how my first year went just so you guys had a frame of reference!
I had a 94% average in my grade 12 year, taking 3 AP courses, and 4 other classes... I think it was 4 haha I can't totally remember. Anyways, this is not meant to provide you with a basis of comparison because your experience and my experience will be completely different. This video was solely intended to maybe ease some of the anxiety surrounding how your grades might change... here's hoping I kind of delivered on that! Thank you for so supportive you guys, it means the world!
If you have any questions, please email me at itsmemaddya@gmail.com

LITERALLY my grades in my first year UBC sciences. (K almost literally) I also had a very high high school average but it was really hard for me to not define myself with my UBC grades after first year. Happy I came across this vid and see another person "struggling" or not doing as amazing as they once did. It's honestly very encouraging! TY for making these!

I never expected you wouldn’t like physics and calculus. They are the best courses ever!! I am just joking haha. I understand how difficult it must have for you to adapt to something you didn’t like. At one point, I certainly lost an interest in both of these courses, but over time this feeling has really changed and I now have a lot higher appreciation for these fields of study. I am glad you did quite well even when you were in a position of fear and doubt. Good luck on any future studies in the beautiful wonders of science and math!

I'm one of those love physics & math persons. I'm attempting a double major in physics and chemistry for a degree in materials science/nano-materials. I thought I was going to fail comm, because that is where my weak point lies. It was surprisingly non-horrible, however, because it dealt with science writing, and I could appreciate the value in it. I didn't get a super-duper wonderful grade, but it was acceptable.

Hi Maddy. Would you say that your work load increased ALOT ever since you got to UBC as opposed to high school ?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hi Chloe! I would definitely say it increased. I was taking 7 courses all through my grade 12 year of which three were AP classes so in a relative context, yeah I would say it increased. But it doesn't always feel like more because you are taking fewer classes, but just doing more of the same work... if that makes sense? You spend more time on fewer classes rather than less time on more classes. It is a big change at first, but it becomes manageable pretty quick!
@manavkakkar2847
@manavkakkar2847 4 года назад
Hey! You did pretty well given your circumstances you know!? And, I'm glad you're satisfied with your grades. You can hate me but I loved the Physics I studied in 9th and 10th grade (didn't study after) probably because it was damn easy but I dunno. I love that you hate Calc too lmao. Also, wait a minute finals account for 5% or 30% of your grade. Ain't that too much of a leap haha? The point of hosting a final if it only accounts for 5% is just beyond me! I'll be taking 104 as part of BCom too, might have to take 105 too but I ain't sure (hopefully not!). Is there any prep work I can do in advance so that I do well on it! Any resources you might suggest!?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
I know! It didn’t make sense to me either but UBC wanted to give students the benefit of the doubt. They chose your grade based on which final percentage gave you a higher overall mark so I’m not complaining! As a Sauder student you technically only need one math course but it depends on your intended major. If you took differential calculus in high school, I strongly recommend you review those concepts before starting 104!

Hi! I'm a prospective student but I have no idea what to do for course selecting. I do know people who attend UBC science who are more than willing to help me choose courses, but it'd be nice to know a little bit about how UBC's courses work. So these are basically the questions that I've been wondering: 1. How do you know what classes are required for science? Where do they tell you that? 2. What do the numbers mean? (ex. BIO 112) and if there are any studying tips you could give us, what would they be? Thank you!
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Hi! I am happy to help you out - I will have a whole series about course selection coming up next week sometime :) 1. The classes you need to take depend on your intended major. Most majors, though, have very similar first year courses so it makes it a little easier to coordinate. This link will take you to the academic calendar. If you scroll about half way down the page all the majors within Science will be listed and you can find what courses are required here: www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=12,215,410,0 2. The numbers are essentially the course code... I don't think there is anything else. I guess it's kind of an identifier too. Within the department of Biology (BIOL) that specific course (112) studies the "Biology of the Cell" Studying tips... be consistent, be diligent with your time, and don't study for extremely long periods of time. Take breaks when you need them and set goals for yourself!
@hannaht.5533
@hannaht.5533 4 года назад
@@MaddyA thank you so much for your willingness to help us :) I understand that they're the course code but I don't understand the numbers. For example, Math 100 means intro to math. Bio 102 means ____. (These are just examples lol I don't know what math100 is) How we would know which one we're supposed to take based on our situation?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
@@hannaht.5533 Of course! I see what you mean... Typically, courses numbered 100 are introductory courses. But for the most part, any other number sequence doesn't mean much. There are some courses where the numbers are consecutive like Math 104 and Math 105... Math 104 is a pre-req to math 105. So they kind of go together if that makes sense? Send me an email and I can help you figure things out a bit more! itsmemaddya@gmail.com

i totally feel you when you say you hate physics also i have a question, did you have to take a language course in high school to get into ubc?
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
It's a grind for sure haha! UBC requires a grade 11 language. At least for sciences and arts it is required. Check out this website: you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/requirements/canadian-high-schools/#british-columbia It will tell you the admission requirement for whatever degree you are interested in! Sometimes if you don't take a language in high school you can still get in, but you have to then take a university level language course... which I can assure you would be far more challenging than what you would take in high school.

Nice video! Just curious, what average do they use to admit you to your second year program placement? Is it only first semester or both semesters?

@MaddyA 4 года назад
Thank you! On UBC's website they say "The average used for the 2nd year specialization application is your most recent overall Winter Session average" but I am not sure if that means the whole year or the most recently completed winter term. My guess is the full year but I am not 100% sure.

You mentioned that the courses you took were mandatory for first year science students. Would you mind elaborating on that? How can we make time for electives if we have to take all those classes? I'm really confused about the whole process of choosing my courses and am very scared I won't plan them smartly T_T
@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
Yes! They are requirements for most specializations. Because of that, most first years end up taking very similar courses. You don't have to take all your first year courses in first year. You can take them over the summer or in second year, so long as you have taken the select few courses required to actually enter into your specialization. For example, say your intended major requires course A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H as first year requirements. To be able to even apply, you must have completed at least A, B, and C or whatever. You don't need them all done before you go into second year... and thats where you can potentially fit your electives in. Don't worry about course planning! I've got some stuff coming out next week! Hope that makes sense/helps a bit!

@MaddyA
@MaddyA 4 года назад
If you are considering UBC med grades aren’t the only thing they look at. They have a very intense individual and group interview process, as well as the exam (MCAT). I think they also require some sort of personal profile. I don’t know what your situation is but I would hope you want to go to med school... regardless grades don’t define you. They matter, but your worth is not a number :)

It's not impossible but it is a lot of work. It also depends on your strengths, weaknesses, interest, focus, etc. For course like chemistry and physics, the averages are usually in the 70s, biology usually low 80s, and math is in the 60s. Again that all depends. Nothing is set in stone here.
