That’s an understatement! We have three. They consume me. But that’s the way I am so I have to live with the monsters I created!! I love them like my own kids but all six are grown and I have grandkids I adore also but don’t see often so these furbabies fill any gap I may have needed in caring for another creature. Actually I think they take more work than my kids did. I think they cost more money too. But as they sleep on the bed all around me as I rest, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love them so much!

I agree with you Tony, my 12 years with Kara were the best 12 years ❤ of my life with a dog. I think you remember I told you about Kara the Frenchton. They definitely do not want to be alone and are so human like. Never had a love like with this dog. I definitely need another Frenchton at some point. My girl did have Giardia, when she was a pup, she even had blood in her stool. So my vet gave her a special medication as well. Plus, she did have allergies to certain grass. But, otherwise, once I did her nares, she had a beautiful 12 years. 😔😪

Great info! I'm glad you mentioned not to go by akc standards. I have a tiny toy poodle who was a wonderful gift from a friend. The problem is that teacup poodles shouldn't even exist. She has issues with a collapsing trachea and problems with her teeth that were most likely caused by breeding her to this size. She does have papers, but no one even knows where they physically are anymore. She was given to me during the worst time of my life and she is my little baby. I just hate it that so many dogs are bred with the aim of them meeting ridiculous standards and not to make sure they are as healthy and happy as possible.

Hi Tony, loved your video. I was looking into Frenchies 15 years ago & learned most of this stuff about them & since we lived in a very hot climate with many spare the air days, we decided adopting a Frenchie or Pug or similar dog wouldn't be fair to the dog & instead rescued a little terrier mix from the local shelter. She's going on 14 & doing great & ironically has had the same allergy issues as your Frenchie. We did the shots for a while, & even tried steroids which completely changed her personality & I don't recommend it. We now give her Apoquel & Attarax & she has been on prescription non allergen dog food. At certain times of year her itching will still flare up & we give her a half tab of benadryl(the vet said it's ok) Hope you find what helps your Guy, as a fellow allergy sufferer there is nothing more miserable than hives & wheezing

The prices in the US are insane, literary insane. I got mine for 200$, and after 4 months he is still in perfect health. He had good parents, and we got all the papers. I really do not understand the prices over there, but as long as people are willing to pay that much, they will charge as much as they want. You could have literary bought a ticket to Europe, got the dog here, got back home and have about 1000$ to spare. Sorry about the rant, frienchies are awesome :)

Frenchies are expensive in the Nordics, too, but for a good reason. Breeders (good ones at least) breed their dogs with as healthy dogs as possible, test their dogs for genetic problems, and all the puppies have often multiple vet's appointments before they go to their new homes. :)

I would do your research for sure!!! Just letting you know 😊

Ace video, thanks!! Frenchies, like people, vary between individuals. We have an 8 year old, who does have allergies, doesn't shed more than average(less than a lab for example), is tolerant of different foods and is relatively unsmelly. They do come with tendencies for health issues, breathing as you point out. If you compare various individuals some have slightly longer noses, others have smaller nostrils. Ours breaths OK but he has a slightly longer face than yours. Id never have another breed, they are the most loving wonderful companions.

So much great information told plain and simple, especially with regards to the AKC and snout size, thought I was listening to a buddy talk and not a RU-vid video. I have always wanted a French Bulldog but feared that life was way too busy to give him/her the time and companionship they deserve. I recently retired and now feel the time is right. Knowledge is a good thing and I feel confident moving forward with making a Frenchie part of my life. So I imagine pet insurance considers the surgery as elective and won’t cover? Do you know if there are different types of plans, one that may cover a quality of life surgery for the pup? I’m going to check out your RU-vid channel to see if you have any post surgery updates and how it improved your pup’s quality of life. Hope you are all doing well, thanks for sharing!
@TonyCassara
@TonyCassara 3 года назад
With regards to insurance: it's all luck. I've known several Frenchie owners who insured their pup right away and the insurance covered it. I also know ones who did and the insurance covered nothing. Realizing they wouldn't cover anything we saved up the money we would have paid on premiums and used that towards his surgery. If you do have time make sure you try to find a pup with parents who have longer snouts and legs. Also a more narrow chest. Those are the best signs of a healthy frenchie. I'll add a video in the next few months talking about this more but if you have the time and are ready for all the challenges that come with them, you will love your frenchie!

@Tony Cassara - Hey bud, I'm in LA and had a pug for 13.5 years (He just passed away two weeks ago), but... he had very bad food allergies, the breathing issues of short nosed dogs, and I wanted to recommend a food to you guys that we can't find on the west coast. I found the best dog food for our little guy to be (Avoderm Salmon and Vegetables). Great video! I hate to see the misconception with the AKC thou. There are lots of restrictions that the AKC enforce such as overbreeding limiting 4 liters during the entire lifespan of a female, completely justify having the certification. As far as breed standard the muzzle is not suggested to be pushed further back and the AKC would eventually ban the breeder that is trying to accomplish an extreme smushed face.

Some input from a rescuer of sick dogs prefaced with always ask your vet first - The majority of commercial dog food doesn't contain much fat, which is a critical element of a canid's diet. Coconut oil or avocados are a nutritious source for extra fat and can significantly diminish the issue of shedding and dry skin. Additionally, coconut oil is anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-protozoal and anti-bacterial. You may see whipworms or other small parasites in his stool the first time he eats this, but - as Shrek says - "Better out than in". You stated that you regularly groom Tortellino (love that name BTW), which is a good thing since most short-haired dog owners assume the animal doesn't need to be brushed. My experience with these goobers has produced some fairly yucky results from dermal residue during reverse line brushing/combing - basically pushing the coat in the wrong direction and getting right down to the skin. A flea comb is extremely useful for this purpose and will remove every bit of crud. Grooming in this way once or twice a week should reduce the shedding quite a lot and cut down on his wanting to roll to scratch the itch caused by the aforementioned residue. I agree with D. Jackson that raw food is the best. You should also ask the vet about adding B12 or a B complex to Tortie's food to aid in nutrient absorption in the intestinal tract and feeding green tripe once a week to help with beneficial gut bacteria to break down the proteins and carbs in his food. Apple cider vinegar internally and externally is also helpful to dogs with immune system deficits - www.natural-dog-health-remedies.com/apple-cider-vinegar-for-dogs.html#benefits - and will be enormously effective in reducing itching. Bragg's has the mother included in every bottle and you'll want to shake it up before adding to food or water. Hopefully, this will help. Tortie's is insanely cute and I happen to be very fond of this breed.

I have to speak up about the parasites this dog came home with....that is the fault Of the BREEDER. No reputable breeder would let a sick puppy go to a home! At the very least they SHOULD have paid for the Vet bills. I could go on and on about breeders but that’s another topic. My point is with good breeding and nutrition you should have heathy dog for Many years . If you buy a dog from breeder with fci certificate, you wont have breathing, bones and other problems. Mine doesnt even snore. Maybe we are lucky, i dont know but im extremely happy. If you are on a tight budget then this might not be the best dog for you because he has to eat premium food etc.. Anyways if you decide for a french bulldog, you can ask me anything you want😀.. I also was in the same situation and it wasnt an easy decision. Now im glad I got a frenchie, my whole family loves him and he loves them even more. That little pig changed our lives. ❤️

Lovro Cosic - we have three and they all have a bit more snout than this fellas. The boys don’t snore a lot or loud. The girl snores like crazy but she has a little shorter snout than the boys. We got her from a bad breeder nearby. I think of her as more of a rescue. She doesn’t even have authentic Frenchie traits. But she’s our little odd ball and we adore her! She’s the sweetest! We bought our boys from the same breeder in Iowa. Both blue(gray)&white. Tons of allergy/yeast and itching/chewing. Going thru foods and diets to stop the yeast. I found one online which is a no carb diet and I bought the Dinovite and their LickOChops oil to supplement. Only one week one of three month diet so we’ll see. They’ve cost a fortune. But we have three. If only one maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. As for vet bills you just never know no matter what kind of dog or animal you get.

We have 2 Frenchies and have found out that Fromms is a wonderful food for thier coats and pooping too. Also our vet did a procedure on thier nairs and that has helped so much. I know that you probably get so many comments But you are so right the surgery is so helpful so that they can breathe.

I just got my two-month-old Frenchie I've had them for about 3 weeks now I grew up with a black lab and had several cats but this dog is like a little human he's just literally like a little baby human boy he's so sweet and precious but I am going to honestly say I got what I asked for everybody warned me of how hard this was going to be and it's a lot of responsibility money time and energy this breed of dog wants to be with you 24/7 so anyone that's going to get one really prepare yourself you're in for it but you're also one for unconditional love that will make your day everyday

These little guys and the PUG are both super awesome dogs!!! Their behavior and their moods are incredibly fun!!! They're so funny and active!!! AWWWWWE he was crying for months??? I could never get an animal by itself!!! I always get 2 of everything I choose... 2 kitties, 2 puppies... and I always get them a little younger than most people do... I go for 5 weeks old and by doing it this way, their bond with me becomes much stronger!!! There are healthy organic foods for dogs that will keep their bowels stable and firm, so that will help you!!! You 2 will adjust to each other because that is nature!!! Just follow your instincts and you will be fine!!! HAVE FUN!!!

Yes I had one who passed at 12 years old. He slept with us always. Great companion and he talked. Yep, he would throw a fit when his Daddy got out of car which put him into a fit saying “I want my Daddy” over and over and like “hey, you got the hamburger you need to give me the french fries!! Yep like now, and how about a little bit of that burger. He was a great companion and miss him. Your dog is much bigger. But, he never knew his size. Loved everyone!

My best friends have two frenchies! They got one first but then got a second one, same mother different father. I am so glad because you won't believe the difference with two! Be aware they SNORE, FART, SNORT, like mad and want ALLOT of attention! They are AWESOME dogs but VERY expensive to buy and VERY VEEEEEERYYY EXPENSIVE to maintain! IF he/she will be alone allot and you can afford it, get a SECOND one! No matter what, GET HEALTH INSURANCE, those things are NOT well engineered! LMFOA! Be VERY careful if you take them outside in the heat, and my friends live in Tampa! They OVERHEAT VERY EASILY. They are so FANTASTIC but please KNOW what they NEED and INTAIL before getting one. IF you can get TWO, DO IT! You will not BELIEVE the difference!

we have 2 frenchies. both have allergies, one had watery eyes. Adult one we tried cytopoint for several months. shedding did not change, scratching kinda stopped. we switched to making our own dog food. after a month, eyes are completely dry and shedding is down to a 1/4 of what it was, and it was horrible. no scratching at all, except when they have a insect bite. our new 4 month old puppy has just started with whelps and scratching. so now we are on another mission to find help for her. my reason to tell this is to share making your own dog food. try it. I found a man who makes dog food in meat loaf pans on youtube and we semi follow his reccomendations. Below is our recipe: 1 lb. ground beef, 1 lb. ground turkey, 1 frozen pkg. of chopped kale, 1 pkg.brocolli. 5 eggs, 1 can of peas, 1 can of corn, 1 can chilli beans, 1lg. can of chopped tomatoes, 1 large sweet potatoe, peeled and pressure cooked with 1 bag of chopped unpeeled carrots, ends removed. drain & smash these. I add in any leftovers that I have or need to use up. 1- 2cup pkg of cheese, 1/3 c. of ground flax seed, 1 tbsp. of turmeric, 1 handful of oats. mixed all together and put into 4 loaf pans and bake 30 minutes on 350. hope it works for you.

At first, I didn’t like dogs with snubbed nose so I had always had other types of dogs i.e. Jack Russell, Lab, Miniature Pinture, Poodle, etc. However, 7 years ago, I saw a lot of French Bulldogs pictures on IG and the next thing I knew I couldn’t get enough of this funny-looking and cute dog. I eventually got one six years ago. Honestly, when you have one, you need two, and the next thing you know, you have three. That’s how my life is right now. 😂😂😂
