Same thing happened to me a while back before I knew better with a Pacu. Outgrew my tank within about 4 months lol. It's very rare that those people know what they're talking about. Always do your research before getting anything.

As long as the size difference isn't too far apart I don't see why not. Bichirs are normally bottom feeding fish though they are active for being bottom feeders while Needle fish normally stick at the top, so I would expect them not to even notice each other too much. However, I'd be worried for the Needle Fish if it was too small. The Bichir might go for it if there was a big size difference. Otherwise I wouldn't worry. They have similar diets too so that's a plus.

Found it a while back at a local Fish shop. They're usually pretty common down here in Florida.

They actually aren't eels at all, though most places will call them "Dinosaur Eels" just because that's what they look like. They're actually called Polyterus, or Bichirs as the common name. They're bottom feeding like a lot of eels but are usually pretty active and swim around a lot. The species hasn't changed in over 30 million years, which is why they're called "Dinosaur Eels" and unlike most fish they're actually pretty smart and will often watch you outside the tank. /nerd mode

Most fish are kind of "awkward" when new to a tank and might need longer time to adjust than others so they might not eat too early. Others might eat within a few hours of being introduced to the tank, it really depends though. Give the Ropefish some time, a day or two maybe. Then check back and try to feed. Unless it's listing in one place for a long time and not moving much at all, it should be fine.

I can't say if he ate the crab, because they'll usually keep their distance, but I have seen the two get into scuffles before. So yeah lol He was pretty much gone regardless. If the crab ever molted, where he'd be vulnerable and almost paralyzed for a couple days, he'd be screwed. Shouldn't be too hard to fix your situation, just give the danios or whatever you want to give away to a Petshop.

I actually don't even have this tank anymore. I screwed up with my water and a few of the Bichirs actually died. =\ It was horrible. So I gave away the fish that were still alive and sold the tank. I do have another 40 gallon breeder tank with another Ropefish and Senegal Bichir. They actually get along very nicely.

Definitely upgrade first. These are predatory surface dwelling fish and really need at least a 100 gallon tank to properly care for it as they can get to under a foot. You'll need the room especially because of how they hunt. They bolt at their food and are known to accidentally hit walls and bonk their beaks.

The plants are fake and they're made to float. They're really just there for the fish's enjoyment. The Bichir is DEFINITELY the killer. A Bichir will eat anything that fits in its mouth lol. I used to have a big crayfish in that tank and when it molted the Bichirs tore it to pieces. The Catfish can probably stay as long as they're not too small and the gobies are fine. The Danios I'd get out of there though. Only a matter of time before they're gone.

@HQmusicam112 It's the albino version of the larger brown one. An Albino Senegal Bichir.

It's not bad, the design to suck water into the filter with a small pump at the top is terrible though. It takes forever to pump water into the thing and really you'd be better off just using a cup or something, but overall it's a decent filter. Can't compare to the Rena XP3 though.

Not exactly, Ropefish are on a separate branch of the species. Polypterus Palmas is more of a Bichir and are usually mistaken as Senegal Bichirs.

@44gatorboy Well for one the plants are just fake, they were pretty much there for cover and hiding places for the fish. I got them there by wrapping the bases of them around the intake and outtake pumps.

Nice gar! A local privately owned pet store has a couple and I was thinking of getting one.. I've gotta 25 gallon at the moment, but I might consider upgrading. The gar's they have now are pretty small... like skinnier than a pencil atm. Do you think I could have one?

GET THE GOBIES OUT OF FRESHWATER AND PUT THEM IN BRACKISH!!!!! dont put your bichir in brackish...ever! dragon gobies are not freshwater fish,ive raised,sold,and kept violet gobies.theyr brackish fish and dont usually get buch bigger than 6 or 7 inches in fresh. the catfish are fine,and its your bichir eating them... XD!!!!! i went through the same thing!!!!!!!!
