Tennesse Williams summed it up a bit more succinctly but without the poetic profundity - He simply said ""we are prisoners in our own skins .
Gibran is trying to express something sublime ...difficult if not impossible to decribe the sublime - in fact I was put firmly in my place once by a professor who explained that something "sublime" is beyond explanation - bit like God really - you may know it or feel it but not describe it .... and as the Bhudists would have it ..don't bother trying ... Here you sure can feel it!...

Incredible.. In each and every way. I follow the video and at the same time I read the original arabic prose. Though there are a few lines missing in the English translation.. but this is truly a majestic performance and recital. My compliments to all.Absolutely touching.

Thanks Jim ~ no me neither ~ I probably like yourself became aware of him in the 60's when his "The Prophet" became cult reading - if you remember he has a chapter there "Friendship" which I was looking for when I stumbled across this. It was a tough one this ~ I found it extremely difficult to learn and even more so to interpret. I finally half read half performed this and wasn't at all sure of it's quality. I have however come around to it and accepted it ~ it has a melancholy & sort of lost feel which works I reckon ~ thanks again db

“A little while, a moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall bear me.” --- it happened. It's me. Not what people would expect, but I was a very good writer before I found out. Still have my doubts, but the experience I had when I saw The Prophet cover for first time was undeniable for me. A voice spoke aloud in my head (only time this happened) and said "This is you. This is you." Not trying to gain a single thing by saying this.

I have a pretty keen sense of what you are saying ~ for me not only with the prophet, but indeed many if not all of of the literary, particularly poetic masterpieces. Frankly I am unlikely to be moved to work on them unless I am "prised open". My Life blood! :) Thanks for the input ~ best to you

I think that this is the greatest poem ever written. Each time I read it I am brought to tears. But this is not how I read it in my mind. I do not like the way he reads it. These are powerful words that do not need help from the reader. The words can speak for themselves and his interpretation is a distraction. If this is your first encounter with this poem please read it for yourself because this person does not do it justice. He is a distraction.

Well, Well, Well ~ you don't like it ~ ...Fine that's your choice ~ but to suggest the world should not like it as a result of you not having a good old weep amounts to prejudice ! ~ only my opinion of course! And I wonder who is the distraction here? I say to the world instead "Read It"...You may love it. It may not be the greatest reading ever but it is at least an accomplished attempt by an individual who has spent 60 years working on his craft in an attempt to communicate the often complex and profound nature of Poetry.

You don't have any clue what expertise I have but you still felt a desire to critique my words and let me know what you think. I don't like his reading this poem at all. I could not even finish listening to it. You could use some work on your commenting skills, as well. :)
