This is how I've been dealing with dandruff y'all.
This video is intended to exist as guidance, but definitely not an authoritative "how-to" on keeping everybody's scalp cute. There are SO many issues that all seem to have similar symptoms. So finding out exactly what you're dealing with will illuminate better solutions for you.
When in doubt see ya dermatologist!

Yes Will, clean them hair tools. 💁🏽‍♀️ I would soak mine in a container with water and dish soap or cleansing shampoo. I use a cheap soft toothbrush to get in the crevices. Wash y’all bonnets, scarves, and hair ties too. Rotate them after you wash your hair. It keeps your hairline free from irritation or breakouts.

This is some of the most honest hair information from a natural hair youtube! I love that you read and used research and said as much instead of just saying things that come to mind. And I love that you went back and found more research instead of just using one study. As for your confusion about what you read, you have to look at who is funding the studies. It can be a brand that sells coconut oil paying for a study on the benefits of coconut oil.
@WillOnAWhim
@WillOnAWhim 2 года назад
I peep the game sometimes too! Companies will really fund research if it will give them an angle to sell product. It's treacherous out here.
@christyambrown
@christyambrown 2 года назад
I was hoping someone would say this. It's so true - you absolutely need to consider who's funding studies. Coconut oil has gotten a serious revival based on research that constantly flip flops in the hair care, skin care and dietary industries and it's not all honest.

So for coconut oil: both of the things you said are true, but it depends on the type of coconut oil. Regular coconut oil you can get from the grocery store makes dandruff worst. MCT oil, usually made from coconut, helps the scalp. So it just depends on the type you use.

Carol's daughter's new wash day delight shampoo has salicylic acid in it! Dr dray recommends it too! Also, this may seem obvious and you probably already do this but just make sure you closely check the expiration date on your products. Some products really should NOT be used past their expiration date because not only will the potency decrease, but you can get irritation! Finally, stay clear of fragrance high in the ingredients list(i.e no creme of nature and most new formulations of shea moisture). Garnier and most other white owned companies are sus as well.

It definitely a person to person thing. I can’t put anything olive oil on my hair. Coconut oil can work in small amounts but my hair gets irritated after a while. Grape seed oil seems to be okay, I’ve never had any dandruff backlash with it. Nowadays, I just use blue magic Indian hemp grease.

I found that applying aloe Vera gel (from the bottle, Holika Holika to be specific) to my scalp and massaging avocado oil on top of it will keep dandruff and flakes out of my scalp for WEEKS. i do this every 3 days or so. I recently had to stop using something because even though it was giving me crazy moisture it was making my scalp TOO oily & causing crazy dandruff. I stand by tea tree and mint leave in conditioning sprays. I'm not a fan of oils so the infused sprays are more convenient for me. I know this helped me with my seborrheic dermatitis so I'm gunna pass over what I've learned over the years: the same yeast that causes fungal acne causes seborrheic dermatitis, so treatments that help one can help the other. Why this is a big deal is that there's this blog called simple skin care science that has 2 master posts on fungal acne, the science behind that bastard yeast that causes so many problems, treatments, and what can be used to prevent fungal acne. Those same posts ALSO have things that can help with seborrheic dermatitis, oils we can use, shampoos, conditioners, etc etc. It's worth checking out if anyone wants a quick reference for things that could help. As for oils in themselves though? Well, you have to watch for the acid content, their comedogenic rating, and the ease of washing/sweating out to determine if it's less or more likely to cause a flareup. Skin type and skin sensitivities are also a big factor, so it really REALLY is hard to even tell if one thing could work for everyone off rip. Personally though? I've had luck with MCT Oil mixed with JBCO and other carrier oils I like (Jojoba, Hemp Seed, Linoleic Sunflower Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, and, if my scalp is really fucked up, Deodorized Neem Oil). If I need something with more hold, I've been using vaseline mixed with mango butter and carrier oils so it's not super heavy. That, and a humidifier in this dry ass winter, really helps. Good luck!
@EpicRealistTV
@EpicRealistTV 2 года назад
Vaseline mixed with mango butter? Interesting. That sounds like that Softee Mango hair grease that I recently found in Walmart. It comes in a small container, but I love the smell and the way it works! Your concoction reminded me of that.

after washing my scalp 10 times lol conditioning and styling, I have to dry my scalp. if I don't dry my scalp with the hairdryer on a cool setting (no diffuser) then my scalp will stay moist and get itchy and flaky. I have a sweaty scalp so the cool setting feels so good on my scalp.

I think I've finally figured out what works for me...for now. I use the Act & Acre Hair cleanse and conditioner and sometimes their scalp detox oil but their scalp renew serum works great for more aggressive dandruff. the day before wash day I dampen my hair/scalp to open the pores and oil my scalp with Sulphur 8, massage it in and go to bed. The next day I use the A&A products and I haven't seen a flake since. I also switched to using wooden hair tools only which was a better decision for my hair because it doesn't create static like plastic combs do. Also, I stopped oiling my scalp; I think everything you said about what oils the Mallasezia eats is absolutely true because once I stopped oiling my scalp and only moisturizing the hair; its been smooth sailing.

Hello! I love ur videos and i have Seborrheic Dermatitis too, it's a hassle but I have to deal with this thing anyway. Btw, I used that same salicylic acid drops and it made my scalp even worst😥 The first couple times I've used it, after pouring down a decent amount of drops on my head, felt hot and very tingly and when my scalp dried I was flaking soooo badly. I got scared but kept on using it, trying to trust the process uk but after some time of keep using it my scalp was sooooo bad, I was flaking right after washing very well my hair. I hated it. So u pls be careful with it, corazón♥️

I hear you! I've been using the drops for a week now. The first application, I def used way too much and that thang was burnin. BUT throughout the week, I've been apply one or two drops whereever I felt a little itch, and I'm pretty surprised at how it's kept the flakes away! Salicylic acid, in large amounts, breaks down your skin, which I think causes dry scalp and flakes.

I'm speaking from personal experience for my scalp issues but if y'all can, just get a prescription for ketoconazole. It helps for seborrheic dermatitis/mild dandruff and clears it right up. Oils on the scalp are not good for this condition. It also helps to know what flakes you are dealing with. Psoriasis, dandruff, or product buildup flakes all look different and need different ingredients to help keep the symptoms at bay.

Coconut oil makes my hair a mess. My African scalp must think it's the enemy. Aloe Vera is great though.
