My Gearbox EXPLODED! - Limit 55 E23 

Keep with the project no matter how frustrating. Once you get past the real filthy crap like this the rebuild will become more rewarding. Look at this as just laying the groundwork!!

Daniel, My sympathies are with you. When I went to pull my tunnel off it literally crumbled. No 1 into 2 bits, More like 1 into 200 bits. I have the distinct advantage that I have pulled the tub and access is SO much easier for cleaning. Re the grease on the back of the transmission, I have read that this comes from the spedo cable connection. Something about the seal is not working as expected. There is a lip seal replacement option that proves more reliable. Good Luck with the restore.

Crap!!!! That’s all I can say “Crap”!!!! It’s either grease or rust that holds these parts together…..but it’s the adventure of finding a replacement or repair that is priceless.

I think I my have an answer as to why MG made a gearbox tunnel out of rubber. I saw an interview with John Thornley and he stated that there was a serious steel shortage at the end of the war and if manufacturers were going to obtain steel they needed to do it for cars for export. If they could economize on steel for the gearbox tunnel so much the better. When my father moved from London to the US for a foundry managers position in 1949 he was amazed to see that nothing was on ration here, but most everything in England was. So he and my mom would go to the local department store, buy up nylon stockings and then mail them to his sisters in London. How things have changed.

1945 Mercury Dime Value. According to the NGC Price Guide, as of July 2024, a Mercury Dime from 1945 in circulated condition is worth between $3.25 and $5.75. with the job you did on your MGA I am sure your TC will be a master piece.

I feel your pain... I've been cleaning and servicing the undercarriage of a 1958 Riley One Point Five for the past few days. Keep scrubbing! My dad still has his first car, a 1949 MG TC that he purchased in the 60's. I was visiting the UK with him when I was about 10 years old. He opened the doors of a small garage at my grandads revealing the car I never knew he owned until that moment. He took apart the car in his 20's and had my grandad (carpenter) help rebuild the ash frame. We have the car with us now in the States, patiently waiting for us to reassemble.

Great! Rooting for you guys all the way; and 2023 is going to be the year! I've been working on a Mark 1, 1960, Morris Mini; and couldn't get it into gear. I adjusted the linkage on the side of the engine (engine and trans share engine oil and engine bay); and that helped a bit, but now it wouldn't disengage! And if I know clutches, that means theres a fluid problem. Sure enough, I pumped the clutch pedal, and some resistance started pushing back, and it disengaged the clutch! I ran around the block, before being parked again with very little clutch left. I hope all I have to do is bleed the clutch, and not go into the gearbox😬 Thanks for the videos! Can't wait for the merchandise (the hats; they're great). Better yet, could I somehow by a Limit 55 circular patch, to sew on to one of my favorite hats? You guys are making some of the best videos on RU-vid (down to earth in a sense). So funny🤣 And your cinematography impresses me every time! Hang tight!

I just want to say that I absolutely love what y'all are doing and I'm thrilled every time a new video pops up on my feed. I'm currently trying to get my MGB back on the road after sitting in someone's shed for 2 decades. It's nice to see other people doing all they can to keep these British beauties on the road.

Hey Daniel you have the right attitude do not give up. I began my first Triumph TR3 restoration in 2010. Single-handed dismantled the entire car. Then left it in parts boxes until the pandemic. I have only the winter months to really work with it, I am always busy the rest of the year with landscape jobs and driving a School bus. Going through each system component is so insightful, challenging, and worth the time invested. Videos like yours really help other restoration enthusiasts continue to move forward with their project. I keep looking forward to the day I will have car back on the road. Love your sense of humor!

I’m just trying to get my TD in a drivable condition and keep opening up a another can of worms, and I klick my heels together and say it will get better ! So Daniel it will get better !

You can likely glue that rubber cover back together (for now) with a product called Shoe Goo. Its a very thick rubber glue that will be stronger than the rubber. Slather it in both halves and hold it together with tape until it dries overnight.

You've done this the hardest way possible. Don't you have a friend nearby who could have told you how to do it much faster and easier? Ahem... The rubber part by the way is only a gearbox cover. The propshaft tunnel is steel. Rubber covers are not unique to TCs! They keep the interior cooler and quieter than steel. As if a TC is ever truly quiet. It IS a sports car after all.

ya, that car's got about twenty years on your mga. not quite the same thing, i imagine. a complete strip down may be in the offing... and i understand the compulsion to clean the transmission. to put new parts on over that mess is like taking a shower and putting your dirty underwear back on. ...not happn'n. :) looking forward to watching future videos on the TC restoration.
