In concert, whenever John Paul Jones is playing keyboards, he fills in the bass by playing bass pedals with his feet at the same time. Truly a world class musician.
Almost quit the band in late 1973, before they even recorded this track. Unsung hero and a superb musician. Great to see him on the video for “ When The Levee Breaks” by Playing For Change a few months ago. Still plays the most badass bass imaginable.
Such a great memory. My mom loved this song. She requested this on radio stations until the rock stations knew her name. She had great taste in music. Miss you mom.Vicki
John Paul Jones is Zeppelin's secret weapon. You might want to check out Rick Beato's What Makes This Song Great series, he gives some great insight into how these songs are made.
The left ear to right ear effect is called panning and has been around as long as stereo recording. The "is that a guitar sound" you've been hearing throughout the song, right from the intro, is a keyboard called a CLAVINET. It's an electro-mechanical instrument that is based on a family of instruments that include the clavichord (thus the name) and the harpsichord. There's a little pick-like thing on the inside end of the keys that actually plucks a string inside which has an electric pickup like a guitar on it. That's why you get that 'staccato' sound. It was used a lot back in the 70's especially on funk and rock songs. Check Stevie Wonder's big hit Superstition for a good example. Peace from SF
I saw them perform this at Earls Court, London in 1975. For me it was one of the highlights of the show (it nearly took the roof off). There is a graet live version from that series of concerts on RU-vid.
They didn't perform this song when I saw them 3 times in concert. And at the time..I really didn't care...because any song they performed was "Golden" to my friends and me!!! Hahaha.....lol.....hahahaa
It's a clavinet -- a type of keyboard. This song is one of the best reasons why this album is one of my five albums on a deserted island. SUCH a great song!
I remember listening the the entire album (actual album) at my cousin's house on Saturday morning with Klipsch speakers. The neighbors called the fuzz and shut us down. 15 minutes later we played trampled under foot. That's what they get!!! Thank you for being a breath of fresh air in a stale world. I've made your channel part of my daily routine.
I bought the albums "Physical Graffiti by Led Zep, and "Toys in the Attic " by Aerosmith, new, on the same day in 1975😎 REALLY great time for what would become known as Classic Rock🎼🎼🎼💖💖💖 Both of you have a wonderful curiosity about music. So refreshing! GREAT reaction!!!
Oh man. I will forever be jealous that I didn’t grow up in that time period (I was born in 85) but I am so thankful my mom raised me on great music, and I got to hear what it was like to actually live through the 60’s and 70’s thanks to her. You all were so lucky to get to be there firsthand!
Hi there from Australia, new subscriber coz Led Zep brought me here, the best band ever in my humble opinion! So many great songs and they were truly unique. Still listening to them now after 50 years! Love your reaction and yes the sounds going around through the headphones was also the same on vinyl through the speakers. Each member of the band were/are legendary in their field.
Mary Margaret Moore below beat me too it. It is a keyboard with a specific sound, introduced in the mid 70’s called a Clavinet. JP Jones is playing it. Another standout on the Clavinet was Stevie Wonders’ “Superstition.”
Still, at sixteenths years, I think Robert Wass the fckn singer. All his power, all his passion, all his emotions, and very, very sexy singer. No tattoo, no musculate, not perfect at all, but, pff..Oh, my god
I love your reactions and you remind of how I felt about Zep when I first heard them at your age way back when. And I still get the same buzz from their music all these decades later! By the way - that instrument you couldn't identify is an electric piano
I got to see this Live in Montreal Canada 06 Feb, 1975! 2 Weeks before this Album dropped! Bought the Album the day It came Out & Relived the Show!! That's when I FULLY REALIZED how Great Led Zeppelin were!!!
I would give you a thumbs up just for the start of the video! Nice to see Alicia again and another awesome song off one of their best albums. I hope she does Kashmir as well. Have fun and Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
You have to let Olivia listen to the Rain Song she will love it there’s a concert tour of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant during the 90s I myself seen that tour in Orlando look for a video of just Jimmy and Robert playing the Rain Song just to show you how they play it
I was fourteen when I listened to the review of the album on Belgian national radio and the only thing I remember is how the DJ/reviewer (Mike Verdrengh) found that it was a pity it was a double-album because according to him there was too much filler-songs and the album should have been released as a single one. I bought it a few weeks later when it was released and never regretted it.
When I was stationed in Memphis air station (1978) learning hydraulics and flight controls one of guys had a '69 Camero with the band's faces painted on the trunk of his car, Zeplin would all he would play on his cassette player!! Really freaking cool! I had a '70 Cougar!
Great reaction!, 😁this song is still played a lot on our local rock station. (KGB) The back and forth on your headphones 🎧 and speakers 🔊 was a very common thing with rock music in the late 60's and all the 70's, groups like Led Zep, Pink Floyd and Santana practiced this quite a bit. I think the sound your talking about is a combination of Page on guitar 🎸 and J.P.J. on keyboards. 🎹 Thanks! Peace! ☮
It’s John Paul Jones playing the Clavinet which is an old keyboard instrument and he’s playing the bass part with foot pedals. It’s understandable not recognizing the Clavinet because it was way before your time, but you should be able to distinguish it from guitar. That’s a trip. You guys need to take a field trip to Berklee Lol.
They don’t change anything! Remastered just means they took out the outside noise. It’s the key board not the guitar. 🤨 it’s an electric piano...silly kids!😂
In the middle section, in addition to backing and lead guitars, two keyboard tracks (one rhythm, one the solo), bass and drums there is a 'squirking' sound repetitively in the background...I don't know if it's just interim distortion of the other instruments or a separate instrument. I remember Page having a device that sounded like this in the Page/Plant era...kinda a box with a kind of joystick on it he would use to make weird noises (NOT the Theremin...). If anyone else hears it, speak up...I may just be having auditory hallucinations. 🤪
Thank you for the squirk! Yes it’s there ! my ears are too blown out to notice it now, buts it’s there in my memory at least. I had the vinyl and some nice Kenwood headphones with a Marantz receiver .
it makes me so happy to see you guys discover this band around about the same as i was.. It's like i get to relive the discovery through guys. Makes an old man happy. Looking forward to 10 years gone and kashmir. Oh and down by the seaside...
Clavinets were designed to mimic classical music keyboards like the harpsichord and the clavichord (hence the name clavinet). It’s a groovy sound. I think queen used one a fair bit early on.
I love watching your reactions, especially cool when you have your friends and family on. As a side note, don't take this as a criticism just a suggestion, look up some videos on setting up your camera. Not sure, but I think you have the autofocus off or you're zoomed in too far but your faces are blurry most of the time especially since you move around a lot. Don't stop moving, it's fun, just look up some info on operating the camera. Good Times!
In another video, Alvia said her father was born in 1973 and yet she seems like this really hip 70's chick! I know you guys are going through Zeppelin but if you could do some tracks from the Kinks Low Budget album that came out in 1979 would be cool. Thanks.
Hey Silas and welcome back Alivia. Haha cool that you guys were attempting to make out before reacting to this song haha all the hidden meanings and metaphors haha It’s the sister song to “The Crunge”, Zeppelin having another go at a James Brown type song and absolutely nailing it. Great reaction guys and can’t wait for the next one
In this song, Page plays multiples guitare with auto wha pedal and volume effets. The keyboard use by John Paul Jones is also use by Steve Wonder in the song "Superstition", a real classic you must know. In this version jpj plays keyboard and a real bass.
Listening to rock with headphones is like looking at the world with one eye shut. It lacks physical dimension. It's a must for apartment dwellers but if you live in a house, and the neighbors aren't too close by, throw a couple hundred watts rms of clean power through a pair of cabinet speakers sporting at least 15 inch woofers and jam your brains out. I want to feel my music, not to merely hear it. There is nothing like that bass punching you in the chest. I guess you guys could get a pair of Woogers. Better than nothing.
That first solo was an organ. Pay attention to the guitar in the background during the organ solo. Also the extensive use of pedals in this song. Drums in this song were also pretty effing cool.
One of the most repetitive Zep songs and definitely the FUNKIEST. Panning from left speaker to right or vice versa is a technique the Beatles used on "A Day in the Life" back in 1967. It's OLD tech that Pink Floyd used a lot, too. John Paul Jones, Zep bass player, is playing a Hohner Clavinet keyboard to get that funky sound, used heavily by Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston, lots of artists in the 70's.
Stereo is what you are perplexed over. Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, SO MANY used stereo to enhance your listening trip! Headphones make it way more apparent than a little cellphone speaker. Ol school would have had big corner speakers or speakers big enough to use as a end table. Used to be MO POWER, MO BETTA and in stereo!!!
This song is pure funk rock! They got the idea from Stevie Wonder! And that solo you can't figure out is John Paul Jones on electric piano and Clavinet! Mixed with Jimmy Pages od tuned guitar solos! The guitar wizard getting odd guitar sounds and he's bending the hell out of the strings!
Glad to see you discovering the mighty Led Zeppelin ! I recommend some material from the Madison Square Garden concert. Try Stairway to Heaven from the Madison Square Garden concert. Also Whole Lotta Love from the same concert.
Rock and Roll is about double entendres... the term Rock and Roll is one itself. There are more double meanings in this song (mostly automobile related) than just about any other I know. Taken from a Robert Johnson tune, this whole song is about giving into temptation. And cars.
Welcome to the world of analog recordings. You can hear more sounds with analog than with digital. Listen to a vinyl LP on a great turntable and it will blow your mind.
The keyboard is a clavinet. It was super popular in all kinds of music in the mid 70's especially for R n B Soul Funksters like Stevie Wonder, Mandrill and Billy Preston like his " Outta Space ". Page is doing all kind of overdubbing with slides, phased, fuzzed wah wah guitars filtered and played backwards. I think the description of this would be hard funk rock that great bands like Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic, Baby Huey, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Slave, Sly & Family Stone, Graham Central Station....
This song brings back such memories when my son was little and always asked me to put it on in the car. Thought it was about cars. Now he understands it's about sex but still one of his favorites. Lol
Headphones, or speakers in the corners of your room, four of them! Sound swirling around, loudly. And headphones, always left and right sides. Music is much flatter now.
Are you guys getting the innuendos within the lyrics? 'I'm so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors'.Zeppelin was the best at making even their sound coincide with their lyrics metaphorically.
