Kamala Das, also known by her Muslim name Kamala Surayya, was an Indian author who wrote honestly and openly about female sexual desire and the experience of being an Indian woman. She was born on March 31, 1934, in Thrissur, Malabar Coast, British India, and died on May 31, 2009, in Pune, India. Das belonged to a group of Indian authors whose works focused more on personal than colonial experiences. She gained acclaim and notoriety in equal measure for her short tales, poems, memoirs, and essays. Using the pen name Madhavikutty, Das also wrote in the southern Indian language of Malayalam, much of which was poetry.
Analysis:
The poem's first lines encapsulate the poet's nostalgic emotion. She recalls the finest days of her childhood, which she spent with her grandma. She was very close to her grandma, who was very kind and attentive to her. She was emotionally destabilised and heartbroken following her grandmother's death. The ellipse in the shape of a few dots in this portion of the poem reflects the severity of her sadness. Her dissatisfaction with her loveless marriage reminded her of her grandmother's pure, unselfish love.
In a reflective attitude, the poet recreates the anguish of the grandmother's house following her departure from the scene of life. She captures the essence of the house's disrepair and abandonment. The poet utilised the metaphor of a gloomy dog to express her difficulty to attend her grandmother's house. She has used provocative visual imagery such as "blind eyes of the windows" and "frozen air" to express the notion of death and desperation.
In the poem's final five lines, Kamala Das reveals the futility of loveless and dismal marriage unions. It depicts the misery and humiliation of a married lady who is obliged to seek love outside of marriage in order to find emotional fulfilment. The concluding section of the poem is dominated by a nostalgic feeling. The poet recalls her grandmother's home, where she received affection and protection as a youngster. In her loveless relationship, she has lost everything of her individuality and freedom.
