Near me, there are three fabric acquisition danger zones: a SEWING THRIFT STORE that supports a sewing school; a surplus & salvage store that has a huge, AWESOME fabric department, and the local Ladies Auxiliary of the Salvation Army hold a massive, and I mean MASSIVE, annual fabric sale - they take over an entire AmVets hall and the bargains are A-MAZ-ING. I really should be cautious about walking into any of these!!! (But the Siren Song of all three is strong.....)

Sigh. Only things around me are Joanns and Hobby Lobby. The thrift store never seems to have even good sheets, not even for mock-ups! I did score a 1960s White sewing machine for a cool $45, and a singer hand crank 66 with accessories/feet for gasp! $25! Ok, I have like 14 machines now, and two were picked out of the garbage, but yay!

This video reminded me of the time where I had past a freesale ,someone was clearing out their parent's house and it was at the end so everything was free . There was a fabric stash that was Amazing . I stuffed my Buick Skylark( yes this was the late 80) to where I had only room to turn the steering wheel and see out my sideview mirror. I still have some of that today

I go to reconsidered goods in Greensboro NC. It's a thrift store for all crafts imaginable. I can only go a few times a year because I get into trouble with buying all the projects in my head. They had a fabric flash sale that everything fabric was 60% off and I think I got enough fabric for 20yrs of WIPs.

I have to limit myself too! Remainders had a sale on baskets the other day, and I almost went, but in the end, I was like... I'm gonna get one or two baskets and then 12 armfuls of fabric that I have no room for at the moment! XD

@pjp9383

Duvet covers seem to be one of the best choices possible - they tend to be in better shape than sheets, and less likely to be stained, they're twice the fabric for (often) less than twice the price, and sometimes they have different but coordinating patterns on each side. ❤

Joanns is sometimes disappointing because they don't have the prices on some things they advertise or when you go to buy on the app to save money it freezes up and cannot continue. I loved Hancock fabric sales before they shut down.

Make some piles of fabric you specifically want to wear. Also, make things you enjoy, sell them, and use the scrap pieces to quilt together skirts, blouses, and dresses. Make shoulder bags to keep and to sell. Make hats to sell. Bounce around among those, so sewing never gets boring.

I love that you have that store available for now. It reminds me of my youth and the local Newberry's store where I bought my fabric. I earned 25 cents an hour babysitting and 10 cents a piece ironing. Newberry's fabric was 25 cents a yard. I made all my clothes through high school from Newberry's fabric except my jeans. Fabric lovers will understand when I say I still have yards from back then as well as a good many yards that my greatgrandma gave me back then. I sewed all my high school clothes on greatgrandma's treadle sewing machine.

it's really exciting to see a sewing/crafting youtuber talking about arts/crafts thrift stores. Whenever I watch videos or read blog posts about where people buy their fabric, I'm always surprised to hear no one mention them when they're such an amazing resource (when available, of course). I was so blessed to grow up in Lancaster, PA where there were three (now sadly just two) thriving craft thrift stores. On a recent trip home I was ECSTATIC to get to visit my favorite one which recently moved to a bigger location. They're still getting the new store pulled together, but I can't wait to see what they are able to do with the additional space. I always recommend checking out Fabric Mart, it's a fabric shop specializing in closeout fashion fabrics. Their online store is AMAZING. And if you happen to live within driving distance of Reading, PA, their brick & mortar location is even better. I went for the first time just recently and stocked up on $2/yard stuff that isn't available online. I also keep an eye on local women's groups and churches, as I have found that they sometimes run annual fundraising events that are basically one giant craft and fabric garage sale.

You need a fabric sample book\catalog. Manufacturers and distributers make them to give to stores and outlets. Even an old one would work (online) , you can learn from the samples and descriptions inside to LEARN FABRIC types. Also, when you buy fabric by the yard, WRITE DOWN the material content, maker, and year you bought it. Write this on stickers you keep in your purse and apply to cloth. Cut a swatch and add to your own binder.

Where I'm living in the Netherlands we have a weekly market that also has several stalls with leftover fabrics from haute couture fabrics down to the simplest of fabrics. All is bought in full bolts but whatever yardage you want, you can get. For my wallet it's actually not the best when I would be able to go, but since I'm bedridden I haven't been fabric shopping at all. Just have used up all my fabric stash. 😅 My yarns for knitting all the things deserve a great organized spreadsheet but have never gotten into it... Luckily my memory is not too bad so far which means I do roughly know all that I have in stash, including all the knitting needles I own. 😊 Really like your video's so far so I am now subscribed as well. BTW: really like the side split skirt so whenever I will have everything I need it will be made in several colorways and versions!❤

😹😹😹I had to look up the store that you went to, I found it but I found a store like this of all places here in Brisbane, Queensland 🙀🙀 shame it’s an 8 hour drive for me but, I had a look at their website and it looks like I will be taking a trip to Brisbane in the near future 😹😹😹😹they have wools at $8 a meter if I read it right🙀the last lot of wool I bought cost me $45 a meter the time before $70 a meter, true they were pure wool and what this place was selling was mostly 50-60% wool and a mixture of other things. It’s a blooming huge savings for me😹😹😹 When you said the yardage for the roll I looked at it and went nope that’s closer to double that so was pleased when you finished measuring I was right☺️☺️ I mostly buy online because the nearest fabric store to me is a 3 hour trip each way so an overnight stay because of it. There are 2-3 specialty stores within a 2 hour trip in 3 different directions but they are way to pricey for me. The draw back of living in the Queensland Outback, great if your a hermit like me but bad if your a sewer like me😹😹😹 Well it’s almost midday I had better get my tail feathers into gear and get the laundry work done🙄🙄 thanks for sharing your massive haul 🤗

Best personal buy from an actual Quilt FAbric store ta da LITTLE remnants in baskets full of beauties. I love "scrap" quilts that have hundreds of different colors per. Some all the way to 1/4 inch square pieces. Same Yehaa I hear from your delight in miles of knits. ))) Did pay money for those.. irrelevant for the amount of "candy" I came home with. BEST PRICE is to let people know you quilt. (hold your breath) Fabric shows up at the front door by magic. Bags and Bags and bins of it, dropped off by the clan of minimalists. I don't know who they are. They've not been in my sewing room or they'd faint. There's gonna be one heck of an estate sale when I keel over. Ya hahaha! I took over an unfinished apartment that still had plywood floor big enough to lay out a bigggg quilt with room to walk around it. I can tack and staple layers of quilt to the floor so they won't shift while I assemble. No damage to the floor. ))) EXtra room to stack bins of colors, room to pile stuffings, closets to fill with pieces big enough for backings. .. and kitchen for cup of coffee and snacks. Would like to have the bathroom finished someday but there's bins of stuffing in the shower space. My "real" apt. is close by so I don't miss any of the standard things.

I know the feeling you have at the moment. Not fabric but twice I spent a lot (like close to a grand) on yarn. And at the time, debit cards weren't a big thing and my hand didn't even shake as I wrote the check. First time, I was working. I drove charter bus and took a quilt guild to a quilt store. And there was a yarn store a few doors down. When my passengers asked what I had done while they were in the store, I pointed. And when asked I answered honestly. One lady piped up and said she thought she had spent a lot but I beat her! The second time was when one of my local stores was getting rid of a yarn I loved but really couldn't afford. I got a fantastic discount!

I found a craft consignment shop in my area a few months ago and I have been OBSESSED ever since. The building is literally an old house and each room is a different craft or type of crafting item. The first floor is primarily fabrics and notions with some fabric and sewing patterns upstairs. Upstairs is all the yarn, embroidery, and some misc craft things. They even do classes and sewing machine repair. The owner also somehow knows absolutely everything she has in stock at any given time. I had no idea this place existed until I drove by it on my way home from classes and I really recommend everyone do just a quick search to see if they have something even a little similar. It's been a game changer.

Y'know, if you happen to be moving anywhere near the Bay Area, there are large and intertwined Maker communities out here and I'll bet it would very much be an option for you to open a place like Remainders with lots of support.

What a wonderful haul. We used to have a lovely remnant shop near us in Suffolk England but it closed - maybe a good thing as I don't have any space to add to my fabric stash. I'm eternally grateful it was there as now I have a stash to dip into when I'm not getting distracted from sewing by watching your entertaining videos. :)

I also have a remnant store near me that is usually a fabric mill. Because they do such large volume what they call a remnant is a roll with 25 yards on it. Most of their stuff is hotel brocades, some fuzzy knits, and some sheers. Twice a year they have a $2/lbs store and I loooove it. I love sewing with it. It's such a pressure off on getting things perfect when you are working with cheaper fabric. Plus you get so much of it so you can experiment. If you ever come to Georgia I'd be happy to hit it up with you.

I love all your videos. I've been binge watching them, and in everyone of them I realize you are just like me in another way. I swear you sound just like my inner voice. 😅 I too love a good organizational spreadsheet, and all the fabrics, and the cheapness! All except that crushed panne. My Mum went through a phase of making absolutely everything out of it and it was too much. 😂

Girl, with your mad skills you should thrift any furniture that you feel you REALLY need. You could slipcover anything and get it to match your needs. I am not a visionary stylist but,,, I bought a brand new custom made 4 seat couch in a chintz I did not like (and hubby hated) from a local online auction. I paid $3.48 for the couch planning to throw a duvet over the chintz. Imagine my surprise to find out there was a complete slipcover set(cushions with own zip on covers) in white duck with party colored very thin cord edging! I thought the confirmation and billing email was a joke! So when you feel overwhelmed after making a big fabric haul just consider if your drug of choice was furniture. You can make room for fabric but I give away a lot of furniture.

Project suggestions! For the yellow, sheer fabric with the leaf pattern: very sunny curtains for your new place. The semi-skin-tone stretch fabric: shorts for wearing under skirts so your legs don't stick together when it's hot out. And honestly, I'm just really excited to see what kind of dress you make with that blue velvet. I also had several velvet dresses I loved as a kid and the texture is just so good. Velvet cloaks feel really nice against your skin, but they aren't very warm. But hey! Maybe that's perfect for your environment!

I live in Santa Barbara. There is not much in the way of "bargain" anything here. One quilting store downtown, pretty expensive. And a place called Art From Scrap, but they charge almost as much as the quilt store for the fabric. Sure with there was a Remainders here! I do go to the thrift stores here, but their prices are even getting ridiculously high IMO. Congrats on the fabric haul, I will enjoy it vicariously! Have a great week!

I’ve just found your channel and have been binging your videos over the past few days. The more I watch, the more I feel like you would be such a fun person to hang with! Your brain seems to work like mine, getting an idea & just having to do it, plus a variety of interests (love the random projects, plus embroidery & sewing), and being new to sewing and learning along the way, is so familiar. I have a bajillion projects, but need to work on the actual motivation to sit at the machine & get working. But first cleaning the art room so I have space to work…again. *sigh* All this to say. I really like your style of editing, the chattiness, unabashed nerdery (any excuse for a spreadsheet? That’s awesome), and overall video style. Sorry to hear about having to move again so soon after the last move. As much as it sucks for you (I’ve moved a bunch of times, & it’s always so much work!), I’m looking forward to seeing the new studio set up. Also, my husband may soon be cursing you for reminding me about the concept of dead stock fabric & looking at local sources. Toronto garment district may be a leeeeetle too close for his preferences!

Aw thank you so much and welcome!! I feel you on the motivation - I had so many ideas, but I was really unsure of how to get started with sewing cause it seemed like a "big deal" sort of undertaking. For me, making videos about it was actually the way in! Also... Toronto fabric district is hardcore on my places to visit list!

@@gettheetothestitcheryI grew up with sewing being a part of daily life; for a while my mom did commissioned sewing & alterations from home, in addition to her own love of sewing as a hobby & clothing for us, so it doesn’t so much feel like learning to sew is a huge undertaking, just that it is well past time I learned to do for myself what my elderly mother is still doing for me! Stubborn kid that I was, I bucked against learning what my mom was trying to teach me, by the time I hit my teens. Now, learning how to use power tools & do home reno stuff from my dad? Ohhhh yeah, I was all over that. I tried learning when I first moved out & got married (15 years ago), with a machine my mother gave me as a bridal shower gift, but it was a nightmare, constant problems, felt like a failure. Turned out, it was the machine, not the user. 😖 Got a new machine late 2019, & have been making reasonable progress since. Apparently, sometimes it is the tools! I’ve thought about making videos for so long (not specifically sewing related, but general crafts, miniatures, etc, from perspective of a craft-experienced but non-expert) but haven’t figured out the actual filming and editing part. A little important, eh?

Reminded me of Mr.Burns' hands "EEEEEXXelent" DAAANG that's a big haul! My best fabric hauls was 12 yards of vintage ~1960s gigham 100% cotton for $3 for all of it (bonus: it was labeled but poorly measured-saying 10-11 yards so I got more than I thought I would). I know what I want to make with it just haven't gotten the courage to cut into it yet. I only had 1 other good fabric find, but you have a real jackpot of a store for fabric, lucky! Sadly nothing like that in reasonable driving distance from me. My husband loves spread sheets, he has them for everything including his games listing characters, their story progress, profession/crafting abilities..etc etc

New subscriber here! We have a local spot called The Scrap Exchange and they have all the crafter and creators things you would need at low prices. I have gotten so many fabrics from them, from their big sales and also just regular fill a bag section. I just purchased beautiful fabric for $4 a yard which isn’t bad for 4 yards of gorgeous cotton fabric for a dress-this was premeasured and ready for a pattern :)
