I was diagnosed with male pattern hair loss in 2007. I spent 6 years and $10,000 on treatments that didn't work for me. Today, I'm a medical editor, peer-reviewed researcher, and the founder of Perfect Hair Health: a website dedicated to teaching others how to avoid my mistakes.
In this video, I'll take you through my entire hair loss journey: from my hair loss diagnoses to my failed treatment attempts to the development of a natural (and free) regrowth regimen that worked well for me.
I'll also talk about my unintended entry into hair loss research - and how this became my career.
Finally, I'll reveal a few ways in which marketers manipulate hair loss sufferers to get them to buy (and keep buying) supplements, topicals, and devices that they probably don't need.
I hope this video helps anyone who wants to learn more about my story, or who is feeling torn between a natural or conventional treatment approach.
If you'd like to go BEYOND the information in this video and start a path toward hair regrowth, feel free to sign up for my free email course on achieving hair recovery - with or without drugs.
It's everything I wish someone had told me 14 years ago when I was first diagnosed with androgenic alopecia.

@@PerfectHairHealth Hi Robert, I'm a new discoverer of your material (website and now YT channel). Been dealing with hairloss for a handful of years, experimenting with minox as well as natural remedies (topicals, supplements, microneedling, massages etc.). Diet has also been a focus of mine as I believe nutrition has to be at the crux of most ailments, and thus I've tried paleo, vegan, Peat etc. Anyways, I've decided not to go the finasteride way. I'm aware side effects might be rare but I just think messing with enzymes and hormones is backward logic. I'd like to see you do a diet video comparing different diets' effect on hair loss. Thanks for all the good material, have a good one.

It's very simple why things such as scalp massages are never recommended. You don't make money off of people massaging their own scalps. Other people's misery is one of the best money makers in the world, the majority of people won't care how much they make you suffer with their dishonesty, the more miserable their customer is the more money they make, the hair loss industry is one of the best examples for this

For what it's worth, I highly recommend Rob and his methods (I have no commercial relationship with Rob or his website). I started using his massage techniques when I was nearly 62 years old and have continued using them twice daily for more than 4 years. The results have been excellent: noticeable thickening of the hair throughout the top of my scalp and a gradual and continuing advance of my frontal hair line. The massages do take time, roughly 30 min/day total, but I find them relaxing, and it didn't take long for them to become a natural part of my daily routine, like brushing my teeth. The massages are the only treatment I have used; I have never used any medical treatments.
@ChrisZ70
@ChrisZ70 2 года назад
Awesome, Randy. Thank you! I am inspired to begin the massages on myself in earnest, now. I am 51, and for a long time I have had some thinning on the top of my scalp (down the center part line) and forehead corners recession. It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't gotten better - and I'm wondering (hoping!) if this massage is the answer. So would you say, 15 minutes in the morning and 15 in the evening is enough? Any tips on massage method or technique?
@randyevermore9323
@randyevermore9323 2 года назад
@@ChrisZ70 I would just follow the protocol that Rob demonstrates in his latest video. That takes about 15 min twice daily. He recommends spacing the two sessions about 11 hours apart to give the inflammation time to subside. I would also recommend using wooden tools like those that Rob gives away to new members. I made my own out of a wooden plank I had lying around the house, and they do give you much stronger purchase on your scalp, which allows much better pinching and stretching, especially. I think that may be why I continue to see improvement even after 5 years of this.
@quakerlyster

I was very skeptical about massage, started doing it twice a day for 5 min. each. After 5 days I noticed much less hair shedding especially during washing. 2 weeks later, saw many new sprouts in the front. Two months later my hair has significantly thickened overall with the added bonus that most new hairs are my natural color. Btw I am older than you.

The difference here is really that The pic from 2011 was taken at an angle where you could see directly through his hair (meaning that they were point toward the camera thus exposing the skin underneath). every picture thereafter was taken at a different angle in reduced lighting thus not exposing the silver dollar sized spot. That really just looks like a natural hair cowlick in an odd spot if anything.

Yeah, sun's brightness cannot be compared to bathroom in house. Pictures are taken from farther out, and front camera's quality is bad. Still I'd take a guess it's both small regrowth, and better stylization. (even if you debate over regrowth, it didn't get worse for sure) And some testimonals of massages do seem to have results. Anyway, you can massage your scalp some.

Thanks for sharing with these videos and your experiences! My ex-boyfriend used to make a point of massaging my hair anytime he stressed me out after drinking! I used to tell him that he'd need that more than me to calm his head and prevent hair loss, although at the time I was only guessing. I'm quite grey on my hairline, myself, presumably because I have dyed my hair since accidentally using "Sun-in" as a teenager. I was self-conscious at the time, wearing braces. Now, I'm doing my best to reverse the greying with guesswork, more or less, but massaging with clove water and drinking fenugreek tea as well as taking many natural supplements, particularly as I have lots of health problems. I seem to be sensitive to light, especially artificial light, too. My body is nearly always in pain, and oxidative stress. I just got my prolactin levels tested, by random researchers. Learning new things as often as possible is surely necessary. It is such a confusing world in terms of human biology right now! My mother just go very bright halogen lights fitted all over her house, and my sister's hair has started to fall out. I'm wondering if there's a connection. I've noticed that greys look different under artificial lights/cloudy sky (blue-yellow light spectrum, then) yet blonde under sunlight. I'd love to know more about what transitions link hair regrowth in terms of light. Eg. When is blonde grey, and when is grey blonde?! Is that the middle ground of hair change? So much to learn yet.... I'm using henna and indigo powder once or twice per year to hide greys and recently decided to stop cutting my fringe in case it was maintaining the greys. I can't shake the feeling that my hairs don't like getting the chop! After massaging my hair, it feels strong and silky, although it only lasts for a few hours before appearing dry again. ;)

It's possible that an approach like this might work! However, two quick notes: (1) if you're facing rapid-onset pattern hair loss, it's probably a good idea to get more aggressive with your treatments (i.e., DHT reduction); (2) headstands might improve blood flow through preexisting capillary passages, but for the reversal of hair follicle miniaturization, we're really hoping for angiogenesis (i.e., the creation of new blood vessels in AGA-affected tissues).

My and my brothers hair growth success story - we did follow a regimen, which took my brother 15 years to build which worked amazingly: 1. Fragrance Free Shampoo: Korean cosmetic industry already know why fragrance free - so research why if you're curious. Even baby shampoo is fragrance free. 2. Taoist Soap for Hair Growth 2x a week- stimulates hair growth, stops inflammation which is the root cause for all hair loss, including genetic and hormone based. 3. Stinging Nettle Tea everyday (make sure you aren't allergic) for removing hormone residue in the liver: this helps support a healthier balance for hormones, but obviously not a 100% cure. 4. Scalp Massage 20-30 minutes everyday - this is very under-rated - but works, you must do everyday. 5. Collagen Powder bovine based 2x tablespoon everyday - nutrition aspect of hair is covered, and will increase the speed of hair growth as well. 6. Cold water rinse (only top of head) after a shower: Do this especially if you get itchy scalp, or sensitive feeling scalp - just do the scalp, dont do it on the back of your head or neck will make you sick if you are weak. but i agree with above video - the entire industry relies on you not knowing. hair growth is complicated - you need to do various things to actually cover at least 5 areas of hair growth - nutrition, detox, hormone, inflammation and circulation.

the massaging theory makes allot of sense because back when I was around 16, my hair strands were thicker and my scalp was soo mushy my classmates loved pinching it. Overtime my scalp tensed up a bit and I am seeing thinner strands of hair but I am now starting on my scalp massage regimen and will observe this in a year.

Bro it could be the same effects as minoxidil, minox increases blood flow to hair follicles which at first causes hair shedding for a couple of months but then that causes to grow newer and thicker hair. The same thing could be with scalp massaging, this is my own speculations but I would think you should stick to it.

I recommend using massage in a bundle, 1. Daily hiking from 1 hour and above, not running, even a bicycle is better, when you move, Nitric oxide is produced in the vessels, it dilates the vessels and the nutrition of cells in the body is better, but NO also quickly disintegrates and it cannot be increased in use, so walk more often in the fresh air in the air, avoid physical inactivity, and frequent strength training, and eat right!

No as someone who has read a lot about these stuff i can assure that i know how does balding scalps look and this guy deffenitly was loosing his hair but i think that his hypothesis will put something new to the world and maybe a cure for baldness with just looking for more than just dht , yes after you loose your hairline its one of the most challenging areas to regrow hair on but if you catch it earlier when you feel that you start to loosing your hair you can improve you hairline and maintain it and more than that even if you loose your hair for decades , i think and believe what rob says which is with recovery on the scalp trough acute inflammation you can make these hair follicles less sensitive and stronger qnd potentially regrow your hair

Hi, thank you for the info. Curious if you ever used an electric vibrating massager at all, or know of cases where people used them? I'm thinking of combining manual massage with also using the former, and also combining these with daily head stands and yogic neck exercises (and maybe also a micro needle of some sort). I'm also taking saw palmetto and rubbing natural anti-DHT essential oils into the area. I also have a LED red light and infrared cap. My journey with being concerned with this, was during my early 40's, I started resistance/weight training and taking creatine (during Covid). One of these, or a combo of these, after about a month in, greatly sped up hair loss. I had a small bald spot in my crown area before, which expanded to be a bit bigger than your 2011 pic. After some treatment, it is closer to your 2011 pic now (slight improvement), but now I'm in the process of trying to refine and optimize treatments. The massaging info is fascinating. I've done a little of that previously, but definitely not much or enough. I'm also trying a couple more fringe methods. Using crude/unrefined oil 3 times a month, and a ultra violet/high frequency wand (allegedly improves circulation). These along with manual massage, an electric vibrator masssager, and/or treating the thyroid (by diet, a supplement called nascent iodine, and/or osteopathically) were recommended by an unusual person/source called Edgar Cayce. For reference, I'm now in my mid 40's. About 3 years later.

Since 2014, I've done a few 3+ month stints of microneedling. There's a lot of mechanistic overlap between the massages and microneedling, and so if you're pressed for time / have trouble adhering to scalp massaging, microneedling is a great option.

Hi Robert, what's your opinion on mixed tocotrienols from red palm oil? I've seen two promising studies on it with regards to hair loss.
@PerfectHairHealth
@PerfectHairHealth 3 года назад
It’s a great question. We covered vitamin E in our “5 secrets” video, but the gist is that the studies I’ve seen on vitamin E showing promising results were conducted mainly on subjects with telogen effluvium or non-specific forms of hair loss rather than androgenic alopecia. This is why the hair count increases can look so impressive. But if a typical hair loss sufferer tries to apply these findings to their own hair loss situation, it’s sort of like an apples-to-oranges comparison, because most people looking for solutions to hair loss (in the developed world) are those with androgenic alopecia. So, while the results are encouraging, I think we should exercise caution in their translatability.

Thanks! Finasteride is FDA-approved, but dutasteride is technically more powerful - although it does come with a slightly increased risk of things like gyno and/or insulin insensitivity. You generally need to use these things long-term to sustain results.

I was thinning bad on my crown and temples in 2016 so I did massages (rigorous detumescence therapy) of 1 hour each day for 1 year. The 5th month saw a lot of shedding in my crown and temples then almost simultaneously new hair sprouts that were stronger started popping up in those areas. But the stronger hairs that sprouted were still thin. In fact it's still thin to this day. Post 1 year of massage nothing changed so I stopped. I still have thin hair on my crown and temples. They're still strong and it's neither getting worse nor better. Then just recently I've noticed a sudden receding on the lower hairline of my left temple. Now I'm worried again. On a side note, I've been doing microneedling with a derma roller for 9 months now but there's zero change. What did I do wrong Rob? I'll be grateful if you at least give me a hint! 🙏
